[APP help] Launcher pro expired and will not download update

This thread is scary... I don't fully understand everything you all are talking about. I only installed the app a couple of weeks ago. Should I remove it immediately?

Replace with what?

No, LP is a good app, apart from this one mistake.

He has stated that newer versions of the app won't behave the same way upon expiry and so won't be prone to the same bug.

I had this with my sisters phone. couldn't do ANYTHING but go on the internet (which took me to the Gator site too). Here is what I did: Click on the 'search' button and go to
launcherpro.com/market.html
You SHOULD see a 'click here' link, click it :) (this will open LauncherPro in the market). Download LauncherPro from there (this resolved the problem).
If it works, I would download ANOTHER Launcher (such as ADWLauncher), so if one fails you have a backup.

Thankyou jan2lid!!!

This worked like a charm. I tried to follow the Youtube-way, but failed, and then I saw your post.

God bless!

For Captivate users that have a task killer docked in the notification bar, drag the bar down to open the task killer and look for Market or AppBrain app and long press to bring up menu that will allow you to switch to that app. Then you can uninstall it and get back to a "smartphone" again. This worked for me. Hope it helps you. Good luck to everyone else.

I don't think I'll ever put LP back on my phone. This was pretty irresponsible on the developers part and really ticked me off. And, he was pretty much missing in action with no direct way to connect to him (website/forum). This app was downloaded from the market and was not a beta app. You shouldn't force an update period. In addition, the redirect to the website didn't work and subsequently kept your phone in an endless loop of trying to get to the website to update.

I have a question for the experts in this forum. What permissions were necessary to give the developer the control to do this? I just want to review other apps I've installed to see if I've granted them the same level of authority. If so, they may be uninstalled too.

i got the same problem just two days ago
unfortunately,i had NO WIFI,3.5G.

so i stared to search on some Forums for it.

here's the thread that the first posted

yeah i had no internet conection,so the solutions in it were totally not working!

BUT!

i got a perfect one for those are in the same situation with me:

in your computer,go to Launcher Pro's website:

download the latest version 0.8.2
(which they said that they had remove the expiration)

then just store in your sdcard

take out your phone, just stay what you have,a browser yeah?

write:

file:///sdcard/**********.apk

(where you put the .apk file and its name)

(".apk"is the post important thing.it'll fail if you didn't write it )

for example,i donloaded it without rename it.

and i just put it directly in the sdcard.

f:/launcherpro-0.8.2.apk
(where i put in my computer)

then the thing i wrote in my android browser:
file://sdcard/launcherpro-0.8.2.apk

that's all.

I have EXACTLY the same problem. The suggestions to go to "applications" or "settings" is mute because the phone is absolutely useless, one cannot get to the home screen at all.

Have you fixed it yet?

If you visit the LP website from your phone, the link in the very first post will take you to download the new version from the market.

Or type this in your browser: market://search?q=pname:com.fede.launcher

thanks for the idea, however for some unknown reason this did not work for me. the package wouldn't open through the browser of my Nexus One. here is how I got it fixed, not sure if this is the easiest way but I thought it might be worth sharing as there seem to be many people stuck with this problem.

please bear in mind that I'm not a pro when it comes to development nor even using SDK, so this is probably a somewhat unprofessional method of fixing it, but at least it got my phone working!

SOLUTION 2

for this fix, you need to have usb debugging mode enabled. you should be able to access this setting when you plug in your phone, through the notification bar.

1. if you don't have it, download Android SDK from here: http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
you also need the latest java kit, the installation software will tell you if you don't have it.

2. follow the instructions on that site to install the tools and the latest USB drivers which will function with SDK: http://developer.android.com/sdk/win-usb.html

3. once installed, add the SDK tools to your systems PATH environment variables. see appendix 1.

4. go to command prompt. type in "adb" and hit enter. this should bring up a list of functions of the adb tool. if this works, you are ready to install the package.

5. make note of the location where you have the Launcher Pro package on your computer (C:\ is easiest). type in the following command in the command prompt: adb install -r C:\LauncherPro-0.8.2.apk

this should reinstall the package, and bring up the option on your phone to boot either the stock Launcher or Launcher Pro. I reccomend the former.
personally, at this point I uninstalled Launcher Pro through my phone and will never trust any software by this developer.

APPENDIX 1: updating PATH

from: http://developer.android.com/sdk/installing.html

Adding both tools/ and platform-tools/ to your PATH lets you run command line tools without needing to supply the full path to the tool directories. Depending on your operating system, you can include these directories in your PATH in the following way:

•On Windows, right-click on My Computer, and select Properties. Under the Advanced tab, hit the Environment Variables button, and in the dialog that comes up, double-click on Path (under System Variables). Add the full path to the tools/ and platform-tools/ directories to the path.

•On Linux, edit your ~/.bash_profile or ~/.bashrc file. Look for a line that sets the PATH environment variable and add the full path to the tools/ and platform-tools directories to it. If you don't see a line setting the path, you can add one:
export PATH=${PATH}:<sdk>/tools:<sdk>/platform-tools

•On a Mac OS X, look in your home directory for .bash_profile and proceed as for Linux. You can create the .bash_profile if you don't already have one.

This thread is meant to be for support for those with this issue. If you want to discuss how Fede should have done this or any other kind of debate, please post here.

Just wanted to emphasize what Roze said, and give this thread the bump it needs.

And when you get there, be sure to read the dev's statement in the link in the first post, rather than speculate.

I want to compliment those who've taken time to zero in on the fix and workaround for this - ace job, compadres!

EDIT - as debate continued after this post, I've moved the discussion to the link above.

This is being done because we were at four threads and more being creating.

This thread - how to fix and recover.

Other thread - whether you like the dev's actions or not.
