Navigation Software

Google Navigator is new and the best. Supports layers, traffic updates, route edit, streetview turn previews (soon).

Also, search by voice!

hold search button and say "Navigate to gas station", "Navigate to red robin", "Navigate to where the Giants are playing"!

Also integrates with existing contact list and internet searches.

Garmin has stopped (or will soon stop) production of the garminfone and nuvifone. They will, however, team up with Asus if I'm not mistaken and deliver a navigation solution for new Asus phones only. Rumours are that app won't be portable to other Android phones.

Anyway, there are lots of alternatives out there. Google navigation may one day be a good solution (it's not there yet, not by a long shot!) but navigon and sygic mobile maps are quite good.

Does anyone know if Garmin is coming for android?

I need good navigation app, that will work on full resolution on my motorola milestone.

Well, Garmin actually created a phone using Android as the base and they sell/sold it on At&t. As far as an app goes, I'm not sure if they ever plan on making one.

Sold ON T-mobile wasn't it. And NO Garmin will not develop an ANDROID GPS APP due to contracts with GOOGLE and NAVTEQ. For reasons I don't really know, but when I asked I was told it was completely off the table.

Shame is I really like the garmin ability and function. However Google maps nav does kick azz. Wish it had the whole estimated time of arrival (as in when you will get there) that updated with average speed calcs. and the ability to cache maps of NA to the phone. Would be great on the devices with more than 4gb of storage microSD cards.

But Google maps does work very very well.

It doesn't. It may work for you, but I've seen numerous faults in routing (I've seen it requesting a u-turn on the freeway, just to have it drive the same way on the next exit), in timing (commands often are too early or too late), in turn indications (arrow showing left, voice saying "turn right"), it seems to calculate back to the original route in case of deviation far too long and the voice is very, very bad. Not to mention it cannot be tuned for your routing preferences and it does not provide pre-calculated waypoint routing. No, gnav is a long way from being "good". Sufficient in case there's nothing better is a more appropriate description as far as I'm concerned.

But TomTom could be in the game as well soon, as their iPhone navigation app is already out.
I doubt it, it seems TT is more and more going into car integration. They now provide systems that can be built into your Renault, Fiat or Alfa Romeo and you can rest assured other brands will follow.

And so will the car burglary industry.
You can't leave high-tech gear in cars. In-built or not. And if phones provide everything, nav wise, that one needs, then that is the perfect solution as people take their phones with them, out of the car, always.

I'm surprised Google Nav is being compared to the likes of Navigon, and then thrashed, when Google Nav is free and Navigon (e.g.) is

Yes.

Test it yourself: program your trip, then switch to Airplane Mode (no connections) and see GV navigate you effortlessly to your destination.

is it possible to plan a route without data or wifi? coz whenever i open navigation on google map without connection, it wont start, any sugession?
No, you initially need a data connection to plan the route. Either a WiFi or data connection from your phone or device. Google Maps isn't a standalone GPS application with the maps stored on the SD card.
