Root Recommend Me A Kernel File To Try Out

Been running the DJ05 leak with the "1129 test non voodoo" kernel file for a good while now and I'm looking for a new stable kernel file to try out on the phone.

Was looking at the Stupidfast V1.54, would that be a good one to try out? One thing I do have a question is what are the "source codes" that are listed on his website along with the kernel file?

Not really into modding the phone hardcore but I do like playing around with it from time to time, hence me wanting to stay with the stable non voodoo kernel files right now.

Any help is appreciated.

Go ahead and give StupidFast 1.54 a try I liked it. Since that seemed to work fine I went ahead and tried the Stupidfast 12/19 Overclocked kernel and that seems to actually run a little bit smoother for me. I may go ahead and give some of the jt non-voodoo kernels a try and just keep playing around. Just keep trying out different things and see what works for you. Generally you're pretty open to play around and find what works for you.

1. I flash these kernel files through ClockWork or Odin?
2. Does everything get wiped when flashing just a kernel?

If you are flashing a file you got from a site make sure its a zip file

Thank you, what I "THOUGHT" but sometimes that doesn't get you to the best places, haha.

It is a Zip file, do you throw it on the SD Card then find it through CW and flash, correct?

Yep just remember to wipe cache 1st

How can I be sure which kernel I'm running?

Also, when you do a wipe do you have to install everything back on the phone or did I go a little far with the "wipe"?

use setcpu and select the info tab it will tell you who built your kernel and when and most guys name their kernels with the date so easy that way.
BTW if you register at xda setcpu is free, otherwise its like $2 in market. If you wipe data yes it wipes everything. Wiping data is not necessary for mere kernel flashing, at most wiping cache will suffice. Wiping cache will not affect apps or app data

Wiping cache you can do when you reboot into recovery right? I actually done that first but when I loaded the ROM though "ROM Manager" it came up with the option to wipe everything before it loaded and I just went with it.

I'll know next time though, no biggey!!

yeah wipe cache in clockwork recovery....rom manager only gives you the combined data/cache wipe, which has screwed people up before.

generally, while it does have some usefulness, i avoid rom manager because 1. its not updated very often on our phone 2. its limited in what in can do 3. cwr is so much better

Regarding this, is there a place that maintains a list of current kernels (with a description of their relative merits) in .zip format (like we have for the list of ROMS/themes)? I wanted to try flashing jt's 12/30 nonvoodoo kernel, and when I did a search for it online, the only place I could find it was in a thread describing how to get it on ROM Manager. I tried downloading it there, but it seemed like the only way to install it if downloaded that way is through the ROM Manager interface which requires either a full data/cache wipe or else no wipe at all. After downloading, I wasn't able to find a .zip on my phone that I could install manually.

Yeah rom manager kinda hides it on your sdcard. its in a folder called clockwork and then you gotta go from there. I have a small thread with some of the OC voodoo kernels but now there are more and more out and my thread never addressed non voodoo.

actually i kinda backed myself into a corner...when i made the thread at first i though themes/roms...then later decided i only wanted themes....but had roms in the title...so i had to live up to my word!

Yup thats it. Some people like to wipe data as well with rom's. But outside of aosp rom its not mandatory. If you have FC's and other issues that cache clearing didnt fix than fixing permissions and wiping data are your next 2 options. Also if you flash a new rom it have the latest version of market inside

Nope. .....my usual analogy...,rom is the body...,kernel the engine...themes the paint job

Yeah its confusing using Rom Manager because it calls everything a rom. Like DL ROM or Install Rom even if its a theme or kernel
