Hardware Version 0004

Did my post get removed or am I losing my mind??

Anyhoo, just got back from swapping my v003 for v004. Right off the bat I think the screen looks better and the power and volume buttons do seemed raised a bit. The best part is I have no light leakage!! Wasn't really a big deal I guess but it's nice not having it lol.

I've noticed over the past few days of owning my 0004, the power button literally makes a soft squeaking sound when I press the left or right side. Almost as if the button is on a noisy spring. I definitely don't like the 'action' of the new button vs. old 0002 button. Harder to press, feels more flimsy, and my 0002 button never made a sound.

I got my replacement unit from Asurion yesterday and it is a 004 HW [SW 3.20.651.3 ; activated 12/14/2010] and the phone was BNIB.

My neighbor also has an Evo [ HW 003 ; SW 3.29.651.5 ; activated 10/15/2010] ] so when he came over tonight, I compared the two in a dark room, both on the same wallpaper, same brightness et all ..

Observations:

1) Using the ' Power Control ' widget, the 004 screen is warmer [ whites are a bit yellowish ] and the 003 screen is cooler [ whites have more pop and are milky in color ] Colors seem slightly better [truer] on the 004, but blacks were slightly more inky on the 003 IMO. Viewing angles are same on both.

2) Using the ' Power Control ' widget, and adjusting the brightness thru it, the 004 gradually faded, while the 003 changed brightness instantly.

3) The 004's power button is slightly raised in comparison to the 003's. The volume buttons are about the same, or maybe a hair higher on the 004.

4) No light leakage on the 003, while the 004 has some right below the ' home ' icon. It doesn't bother me enough to warrant an exchange [and I don't wanna risk Asurion sending me a refurbished unit! I had to almost fight to replace the POS refurb they sent me initially for a brand new one!!]

5) Battery life and touch screen response are about the same on both!

I haven't played with the camera, so can't comment on that yet!

I took some pictures and will upload'em tomorrow for everyone to view and compare.

Feel free to ask any questions :)

I do have the light leakage as well, I am also within the 30 days, might be a good idea to get it replaced you think?

If it bothers you, and you easily can, go for it..

I realized if I depress the screen [ on the area where the light leaks ] the leakage goes away for a few minutes, only to pop back up later..

It's beginning to look like a case of screen separation..My only concern is dust getting under the screen, otherwise I wouldn't bother..

Asurion gives me 15 calendar days to report malfunctioning or damaged equipment, so I'm seriously considering an exchange...

Also, I have a Novatec screen. Downloaded ' Android Terminal Emulator ' from the Market ; typed dmesg and scrolled down to <7> and there it was, in all it's glory - ' Novatec '.

My 003 had Epson, and comparing with my neighbor's 003 which also has an Epson, I prefer the Epson screen as well! [hello redundancy ] Reason being the screen is brighter, the whites are milky white [not pale as on Nova screens] the blacks have more depth, and the text appears sharper on Epson!!

That's good! I wish my OCD didn't kick in with these little things.. lol..

Do you mind doing a little experiment ? depress the screen around the light leakage and see if the leakage goes away, and later comes back.

Might explain if light leakage = screen not bonded properly.

Thanks a lot!!!
It's not around the screen, it's actually in the USB/HDMI ports I can see the light. But depressing it makes no diff.

It means that versions 2,3 were all found to be inadequate in some way and needing a major overhaul. Its a joke no more HTC phones for me. Do it right the first time or don't do it at all. You can be certain "the user abuse" poorly designed charging port was changed to one that works for sure. Again HTC your a joke!

Um, not really guy. Most version changes are not a result of inadequate parts; most of these issues arise from haphazard manufacturing, as they were trying to rush them off the line for the same whiny children that are going to hate something about the phone anyways. Version changes are mostly because, in order to produce them faster, they contract with several developers for the same part. When they run out of say, the screens that company "A" made, they start using the screens that company "B" made. This could also be the result of getting a lower bid from company "B", and contract ran out for company "A", or company "A" already has contracts in line for other manufacturers, so after they have produced the 50,000 screens HTC originally ordered, they move on to other contracts, so HTC has to get company "B" to make their screens now. /end_rant

Well, sounds to me like we are on the same boat then! I bought 2 004's and my primary evo makes a squeaky noise when I press on the left side of the button only. It feels as if it's getting harder to press.

I compared it to my other evo and I noticed a small greyish/white line on the right side of the button inbetween the casing, looks like a pressure point or a crack. I want to take it back, but since i'm rooted, I'm having second thoughts about it.

Bought an 004 A couple days ago and while there's really no light leak and it seems well built compared to others I've seen, if you lightly press the search button the screen has a noticeable ripple effect. Anyone else have this? I"ve seen at least one other EVO with it, but quite a few without. Trying to decide if it's an exchangable issue.

Just got my EVO this past Sat. It's a white 0003. There is definitely light leakage under the home and search buttons, and as was mentioned before pressing on the screen makes it go away for a few minutes. Not really digging the white like I thought I would, so I'll be exchanging this for a black one. Here's hoping for an 0004 with no issues....
