Should I get a G1?

I'm planning on getting a touch phone in the near future, but I'm wondering whether I should get the TMobile G1 or wait for a different Android phone.

Currently, from what I've seen, it's not the most ergonomic thing out there, and is much clunkier than the IPhone interface. The main draw I see is that it's open source.

Are there any upcoming Android phones that are worth waiting for? Preferably, a non TMobile, as TMobile gets horrible service here.

Thanks in advance for any help. If there's a similar thread already posted, feel free to link me to it.

to be completely honest with you, NO dont get it, wait a little, i have had the phone since the release and i was always on this site saying how excited i was and now that i have it, i feel tied down, the biggest news on this phone is all of us waiting for an update to get basic phone features (cupcake), for now you should wait for some advances to occur, because truthfully as of now the phone is kind of dull, and there will probably be other post, mocking me, or saying im whinning of some sort, but im only telling you the truth, and saying what others want to, but are afraid of looking as they are going against android.

I agree he might want to wait for a few months as there are a few more android phones soon to be released which may/will allow a better fit not that the g1 isn't a good one... I couldn't be happier with it but to each their own right.... the only thing I don't understand about what you said is that the phone is missing basic features????? don't get that statement man... Can you elaborate please...

I agree 100% but whatever you do stay away from the iphone, i wish id bought a windows mobile device, purely for the application like gps maps, htc touch maybe.

Are android/g1 fans blind to them? lol

No video recording (fixed soon)
No saving applications to Sd
No bluetooth file transfer etc
No flash (demonstrated, which is very annoying)
No option of onscreen keyboard.(fixed soon)

They are the ones of the top of my head.

None of these are "BASIC FEATURES"

video not on the iphone either and yes fixed with cupcake, Softkey already on many apps have you used steel? and yes will be for everything soon but with full qwerty not needed, blue tooth file transfer ok would be nice but not standard on MOST phones and a2dp will also be fixed with cupcake... flash not a basic feature on phones and not google can't even include that... that's like blaming android because of an app.... also not on iphone or standard on most phones... saving to the sd would be nice and probably will be fixed but also not needed I have 116 apps and still 18 megs free although it would be nice to have 1000 apps... from what I can tell the idea of cupcake has made many people made about what android could be... disatisfaction caused by wanting more isn't the same as "MISSING BASIC FEATURES" but like I said before to each their own... if you believe you got short changed than you did and I can't fix that...

I wouldn't necessarily say give up on the g1 but definitely try before you buy... seems to be alot of buyers remorse....

Cheese, i were wondering the same thing but have decided to just wait for the next installment of ANDROID devices. don't gets me wrong, i think the G1 is great nut it IS only the first ANDROID device. every device runs into a few snags the first time. i'm just gonna wait a while til there are a couple more options available to me. i might advise you to do the same.ANDROID isn't going anywhere. this is hands down the BEST os out there! and probably will be for a LONG time. the wrinkles will be ironed out soon.

Thats your opinion.

Ipredicted your response as soon as i wrote mine. The fact is, my k750i can do several things my G1 can not, so yes, i class them a basic and stand by that.

Flash i accept is not a basic service, but it is missing, its not adobes phone, its not their fault, pay anyone enough and things get done.

I know tethering can be done with a bit of messing about, ive done it, but its not an out of the box service and it really should have been (like the k750i, wirelessly with bluetooth), im guessing tmobile is to blame for that one.

Its up to the original poster to decide for himself, if i was him i would want to know.

every device runs into a few snags the first time.
I agree, and we must show our discontent.

Actually, it's not. Basic implies that these things are necessary in order for the phone to function. For example, a car without seats would be missing a basic feature, a default feature.

Please write this down on your hand so that you don't forget it:
"Flash is made by Adobe, NOT Android" I know they both start with the letter "A" but the connection ends there. Android has no control over this, it is a plugin provided by Adobe to run adobe's software. Android can only ask Adobe to develop it. Prior to now, there has not been much demand for Flash on smartphones and so NOW Adobe is developing it. You can thank the G1 for that, as it might've taken a few more years without it.

If the phone didn't have a dialer, yes that would be a basic feature of ANY phone. If it didn't have text messaging, yes, even cheapo free phones you get for signing up with a carrier have text messages. If it was missing a calendar, an alarm, a rudamentary browser, a clock feature, ringtones (or the ability to download/install ringtones) yes, those would all be basic features. Bluetooth file transfer is nice, but not basic. If there were no other way to transfer files to or from the G1, if BT transfer was the way most phones transferred files - you'd have a case, but this is a perk. Video recording is also not a basic feature, just because there's a camera on the phone doesn't mean it should take video. Perhaps you're used to assuming that, but that doesn't make the feature basic. Onscreen keyboard is also not a basic feature of a device that has a hardware keyboard -- some would argue that a software keyboard on the G1 would've been a unnecessary redundancy that takes up valuable memory.

Now I do agree with you on one point, and one point only. Running apps from the SD Card really shouldn't have been an afterthought. Most anything that has removable media will let you install and run programs from that removable media. I can't explain or excuse it, but I don't find I'm hampered in any significant way by this at the moment. Just means I can't download every app in creation, no big deal. With how quickly the apps install and uninstall, I sometimes wonder if I actually need to keep any of them on the device itself. I want to run a backup? Download mybackup, run the backup, and uninstall the app until I actually need to run another, or use one the backups.

Just because your previous phone had feature x, y, z doesn't mean those features are standard or basic. If you wanted those features, you should've made sure the next phone you got had them. But you didn't, you assumed it would have them because you found them so useful. You assumed other uses would want/need them and that phone manufacturers were aware of that. That's a lot of assumptions to make about an expensive device, which lead you right were you are, complaining about perks that are missing from your phone.

Its up to the original poster to decide for himself, if i was him i would want to know.

Hopefully you've learned that you can't rely on manufacturers to read your mind and know what you want, you do have to actually read up on these things in order to get the best experience possible. Sometimes manufacturers mislead or make mistakes, but a consumer should never blindly buy anything -- it's a recipe for buyer's remorse most of the time. The research you do at the beginning makes for a happier ending.

 Basic implies that for you, NOT FOR ME. What a stupid anology. For a smart phone these features are basic, this is not a run of the mill gsm phone.

When did i say this exactly, please read begore jumping the gun.

Its called business, i bring a phone out, i want my phone to have flash on it, i contact adobe and put in place agreements for them to licenese/create a flash plugin for my phone for a price by a certain date. There no reason why this couldnt have been done.

Bluetooth file transfer is nice, but not basic.
Says who, you? Oh it must be true then ofcourse. Again for a smart phone this is very basic indeed.

Video recording is also not a basic feature
Lol ooooooo k.

You have either a very patriotic like attitude towards the G1 or have low standards, and you are not alone. To me its a device i own i can bash its bad points and praise its good ones.

Stop being such a patronising idiot, when a new phone is released there is a distinct lack of information floating about. They are NOT perks, but basic services for the price and phone type.

I hate jumping in when things get slightly heated, but the basic functionality of a phone is to be able to make and receive calls, anything else is an added extra.

Your out of context, so you would pay

yea when i meant basic, video recording, save apps to sd, bluetooth, i dont now why you say its not basic, there are phones that you can get free from your carrier that come equipped with these. im not trying to bash android im just telling this guy to wait a little till the phone gets some of these necessary features that us phone enthusiast you on a daily basis. plus i know there are ways of getting around things such as app to sd such as getting root, but not everyone nows how to do all of that process, plus you shouldnt have to.

I understand why he he wants these features but thank-you I thought I was alone in the belief that video and bluetooth data transfer were not basic features... basic features are simply only what the phone needs to function anything else is an ADDED feature while I agree smart phones are held to a higher standard the things you've listed are missing not only on the g1 but at least 50% of other smart phones maybe more... and I would gladly trade these features to have the 3g and wifi that other phones are missing like the new blackberry would you consider that a "basic feature" no phone has every feature that is why not everyone has the same phone but it is obvious that accessories not function or andvancement are what he looks for in a phone and I can't hold that against him but that isn't what I look for.... It does bring up a good point though what are the standard features... i guess it I was asked to truley define it the only way it could be done is take every phone and the features they all have in common would be the "basic features"

If you don't like T-Mobile, wait a little bit for the upcoming rush of Android phones from other carriers. The G1 has been a really excellent first taste of the Android platform. It's feature rich and VERY stable. I've yet to have this phone crash on me. But there are some definite rough edges here and there and updates to the platform have been a little slow coming.

Things like Google docs/tasks integration need some work. The phone needs a nice tethering app. Software keyboard. The newer phones should have a better form factor and hopefully better battery life. The browser could use some minor tweaks. We should hopefully see some better apps now that the market supports buying them.

It's really just lacking some minor polish as a platform. Nothing at all that gets in the way of it being an excellent device, but if you can wait it out another 4-6 months you'll probably have more phone options and come into a much fuller user experience.

I have to agree that for a smart-phone, it is not even slightly unrealistic to call video recording a basic feature. My 4 year old razr has that functionality and the G1 doesn't? Sorry but I have to concur, the ball was dropped in this regard.

Well to to rehash the "basic feature issue" but if you look on the market there is an app for this... not to mention it will be corrected with the roll out of cupcake....
