Keyboard lag in the ERIS explained by HTC and Verizon

I recently called Verizon about the keyboard lag in my phone. Although it doesn't skip anything when typing, it can annoy me at times. Verizon said to do a soft reset which actually solved the issue... for a day. I then called Verizon another time and the lady told me that this is just an issue with smart phones and that she is experiencing it with her ERIS, Droid, and Blackberry phone. She told me if I use my phone a lot (which I do) that I should do a soft reset every few days to keep it "smooth." I think this would be a good thing, but is this actually something that I should do? Anyway, I proceeded to call HTC just to see what they would say. Hey, I had nothing to lose. The man immediately told me in the middle of my question: "NO, there is no fix." I then asked if this could be fixed with updated software, and he did his little script about not being able to talk about future updates and rumors and how he can't talk about when android 2.0 will come out exactly (although I didn't ask). Both supports were great and I was very satisfied. I am posting this to answer any future searches and to ask a question. The question: Can this be fixed with software updates? I love posting on other forums that interest me via my phone and in the browser it is SO laggy and I can't even believe it. My dad's iPhone has no lag in the browser, but I guess the iPhone doesn't have a two year old processor. Thanks for reading this mess I wrote.

This kills me...you shouldn't have to do a soft reset, download certain apps (task killers), etc to make your phone work right.

I do have task killers. I have advanced task killer pro for the 30 min auto kill. I am quite handy with android and I have no lag at all (which is awesome) anywhere except browser keyboard and slightly in normal typing.

very weird, i was told by a customer service rep that a "soft reset" is when you simply turn off your phone by holding the power button down and "rebooting". i always figured this was a good idea, just like a computer when u think about it... u do all this stuff on the computer and once in a while its good to reboot the system if it slows down. doesn't seem so far fetched to me.

im not all familiar with the other reset methods if someone can help inform.

hard reset = why would u do this?
battery pull = same as a hard reset?
factory reset option = brings back to original form (erases everything)..

dunno if a hard reset is the same as a battery pull (im from blackberry), and im not sure if a hard reset will delete all your stuff off the phone. im not really sure why u'd do it either?

In the case of an iPhone or iPod, which don't have removable (for customer) batteries, when you forcefuly restart the device we call that a "Hard Reset".

With the Eris; Hard Reset is battery removed, soft reset would be power cycling the phone. I've done this once or twice and it does help.

I'm using Startup Auditor, and that seems to the do job well with stopping programs from opening up.

Sounds similar to a CTL-ALT-DEL restart on a PC to clear the ram.

the reason our phone has lag when u type is because its no multi touch in the keyboard (or through out the phone...only the browser). so it can only register one key at a time. which takes about 2 /4th`s of a second. if it were multitouch on the keyboard we could type slightly faster.

I got rid of most of the lag on mine by disabling the key press sound. It is much much faster now. Haptic feedback is still on to.

As for doing soft resets I reboot my phone at least once a day or after doing anything major like installing a bunch of new apps. I don't see how it harms anything and it definitely feels nice and fresh afterwards.

Yep, love it. HTC's response is always "we don't talk about it" and "no there is no fix."

Next time, try testing a device fully before it is released. Same goes to VZW. They are just as much at fault for selling the phone.

I do believe that the keyboard is multi touch. Is that correct?

I am not entirely sure if the keyboard Is multitouch but I would think that since htc put it throught other parts of the phone that they would put it where It would prove most useful! (the keyboard) ;p

I got rid of most of the lag my phone went through with the portrait to landscape transition by going to my applications in the settings menu and clearing the cashe from most of my apps. I also re-calibrated my phone and that has helped with the screen lags and with the keyboard.

I'm having no lag with my portrait landscape transition...???


Anyway, the 1 second I have to wait doesn't bother me.

Edit: the iPhone has about the same lag in the browser as the eris does.
