I've spent DAYS just to figure out how I can get the new firmware.. I've had Kies once, but had to un-install it because, whenever it asked me to install the new firmware and I checked, it would always say: ''An error occured'' without giving any bit of information on why the error occured. Now I'm re-installing Kies.. I've my battery life on 100% etc. So I hope it works this time.

Can anyone please give me a link to a guide, or please tell me the basic things to be aware of when trying to download 2.2?

Please :( I think I am the only one in europe who is stuck with the 2.1 and I REALLY want a faster Galaxy S with Flash etc. So please help. My threads always get burried and ignored :/

Download the latest version of kies, which is kies2. It seems a lot better than the old one.

Once you have your phone connected and working with kies2, you then have the option to flash new firmware using odin, but unfortunately doing it this way will invalidate your warranty, but it is more reliable than kies.

If you decide to go down this route, you will need to get the right files for the country you are in.

Kies2
On your phone make sure you have ask on connection or kies checked in USB settings. I prefer ask on connection.

Once you have kies2 installed, start up kies2, wait for it to finish loading.
Now connect your phone and wait for kies2 to install all the drivers.
This very important, as most problems with kies are driver related.
It will take a few seconds for it to say Galaxy S I9000 connected.

Now check for updates and see what happens.

When you have uninstalled the old version of kies, you will need to go into the registry on your PC and remove any entry's that relate to samsung and sansung kies. then reboot your PC.
Proceed as abve.

You can PM me if you need any more help.

Thanks for your help :) I finally managed to update my phone!! :D Can you please give a link, showing all the updates for this version?

Congrats on your upgrade, glad to hear you finally have it running on froyo. Now make sure you perform a factory reset (back up important data first ). This is important to do after an update as it erases all traces of the previous os and makes your phone run like it should.

GG1 is correct, you need to do a wipe data/ factory reset and the best way to do this is as follows:

Power phone off, when it's fully powered off it will vibrate.

We are now going to put the phone into recovery mode by doing the following:

Press and hold the Volume up + Home key + Power button.

Keep all pressed until you see the samsung boot screen then release just the power button.

When the phone gets to a screen with lots of coloured text release the other 2 buttons.

At the top of the screen will be some blue text, look for WIPE DATA/FACTORY RESET.

Using the Volume Up/Down, navigate to it.
Use the HOME key to OK the action.

On the next screen will be more blue text. A lot of NO's with 1 YES in the middle.
Use Volume Up/Down to navigate to YES, and then the HOME key to OK the action.

Phone will now reboot. But remember to back up your contactsand any thing else you might want to keep.

To find out what version your phone is now using do this:

Tap on the phone icon and enter the following as if you were making a call. *#1234#

You will see
Phone : I9000XX***
PDA : I9000XX***
CSC : I9000XX***

It's the last 3 letters you are looking for, where I have put *** and post back.

At a guess I would say your going to be on Froyo JPO or JPY both are for the UK and Europe, depends on where in the world you are

I upgraded by using kies, so no flashing or hacking. What happens if I don't do that factory reset thingy, and is it riskable?

Flashing is when you update the phones firmware whether by kies or another program, so you have flashed your phone.

No risk with doing the wipe data/factory reset.
If you don't do it your phone will still have parts of the OLD OS on it and this will cause conflicts, you may well get force close messages, the phone will be sluggish.
It is recommended to do this after every firmware update.

You asked for a list of firmwares to do with this update that is why I asked you to do the *#1234# so I could see what firmware your phone is now on

I'm still running the 2.1, and am new to this. I have backed up contacts and photos using Kies2. When I upgrade the phone, will it erase my stored sms, programs games etc or will they be backed up automatic like with Iphone and Itunes?

unfortunately you probably will loose any sms, programs, pictures ect. There is an app in the market that will back up your sms messages to google, but I can't remember what it's called.

Ty. How do i regaing apps i paid for? Can they be downloaded again for free?

*edit* Updated phone, and it kept all apps, sms and other things :)

After you have done any update you will need to do a wipe date/factory reset, this is because the update process doesn't remove all the old files from the previous OS.
If you don't do the data wipe/factory reset you could have a lot of force closes and conflicts.

This called the 3 button combo mode and takes you into recovery mode.

The way to do it is: press and hold the following keys:
Volume up + Home + Power

Keeps all pressed until phone boots to the samsung boot screen then release just the power button.

When phone gets to a screen with lots of coloured text release the other 2 keys.

At the top will be some blue text, look for wipe data/factory reset.
Use the Volume up/down to navigate to it, press the Home key to OK the action.

On the next screen to will see at the top a lot of NO's and in the middle 1 YES.
Use the volume up/down to navigate to YES, press the home key to OK the action.

Again this might wipe you data, so back up things you want to keep.

Your paid apps from the market, you will be able to re-download them once you have signed into your google account.

Im getting this:
This Version of the device cannot be updated.
PDA:JF4 PHONE:JF3 CSC:JE6

I am on T Mobile UK and am using Kies2.

Whats going on? Can I not get Froyo??

Thanks

It looks as though you have a branded phone and this means you will have to wait for T-Mobile to release there firmware version.

I did hear that T-Mobile had already released it, so it might be worth while contacting them to see.

Your other option is to coincide using odin to flash a new firmware, this will void your warranty but, you would end up with an unbranded phone, clear of all bloatware.
If your interested in doing this let me know and I'll point you in the direction of a guide to help.

Alright, just got home from school, and I wanna do this factory reset thingy. It is easy to remember and do (from the sounding of it), so I thought I'd do it at school, but then I came to mind that I didn't have any back-up files, so basically I'm ready to this Factory Reset, but I just wanna know I backup my files? So can anyone tell me how to backup files? Is it by Settings or by Kies or??

You can use kies to back up your contacts, memo's, photo's, music, but kies wont back up any SMS's you want to keep. If you have SMS's you want to keep, there is an app in the market that will back them up to your google account, I think it's called SMS backup.

The wipe Data/factory reset is quite easy to do, just follow my guide fron earlier post and you should be ok.
After you have doe it, you should see a big difference in how the phone performs.

''You shouldn't be okay''? What do you mean? Never mind, I assume it was typo? :b

Anyway, are there any guides on how to do this backup thing? Cause I don't know how to backup my files on Kies, and I don't know how to back my phone up after the Factory Reset.. And I don't care with my SMSs.

Sorry about the typo.

Start up kies and connect your phone, I hope your using kies2.
When kies has connected your phone, it will show up at the top left of the progam as Pic of phone and GT-I9000, below you will have:
Contacts
Music
Photos
Video
Podcast

Click on each one in turn, select all that you want/need and save to PC

Kies 2 wouldn't upgrade for me so I used the old Kies, and it upgraded my phone without any problems, lol-.- But can't I just create a random folder on my desktop, and then plugin the phone and just import all my stuff to the folder? You know the basic/classic way? Then when I've Factory Reseted my phone, I will replugin my phone and then copy & paste the stuff from my pc to the phone again..

hope you get it lol :b

Yeah I think I do haha

Yes you can do that way for music, photos, video and podcats but, you wont be able to do it for your contacts.
You will either have to use kies or use your google account to sync your contacts to, then when you have done the wipe data/factory reset, just set up your google account again and it will sync with your phone and all your contacts will be back, as if by magic.

For the contacts, I think I will just find a piece of paper and pencil, and write down my contacts on the paper seeing as I only have about 20 contacts lol :b

Just a little question, I'm not sure if I can remember my google account, so assuming that I will have to re-login when factory resetting.. So any chances to check my pass and email?

For contacts, the easiest way is to backup to external sd card, assuming you have one inserted. With 20 contacts as you say, it shouldn't take more than a whole 10 seconds ;-)

After factory reset, just import them back to your phone. You can leave your sd card in the phone while you do your factory reset. It won't erase anything on your card.

Anything in addition to my second paragraph? :)

Well for your email, on your phone, if you go to settings > accounts and sync, your Google email is there under accounts. As for your password, I would go on my comp and when you sign in to your Google account, there is an option where it says "can't access your account?" you can have them email you your password or reset your password. This is all assuming you don't remember your password.
