Help Unknown screen sensor

So, looking at the screen, to the right of the Verizon logo is the led notification. To the left of the "V" swoosh is the photo cell that controls screen brightness and lights the hard keys.
What is the sensor all the way to the left. It almost looks like a pinhole lens. I know it's not a camera, just curious.

Oh, duh. I didn't think of that.
Thanks for the quick reply.

I'd just like to say this place is the best.
I'm one of the people who visits daily, I've learned so much from
everyone. Thank you sincerely.
Got the phone on the first day, still love it.

Are you Pinky and the Brain Bob Paulson? Or Fight Club Bob with bitch tits Bob Paulson?

Probably you're just a dude named Robert Paulson.

what exactly is the purpose of the proximity sensor? Just so when I put the phone to my ear it locks? Does it do anything else?

No...that's pretty much it. Lock the phone during a call, when it's by your ear (so you don't hit the bbuttons with your check) and unlock when you pull it away (so you can hit the buttons).
