Is it a bad idea to trade in my Droid for the Droid Eris?

I was in the Verizon store paying a bill when I saw the Droid Eris. So I picked it up expecting to see a far inferior product than my Droid and I was impressed by it. For one its thiner and feels more comfortable in my hand, the virtual keyboard seemed easier to type on and when I went in the browser it had multi-touch from the jump. I didn't explore it anymore after that because I had to go but I was thinking of trading my Droid in. My question is, is that a good idea? Doesn the eris come with the turn by turn Directions? Can I still use emulators? Does it still come with a 16 gig SD and 256 internal?

Turn-by-turn is coming with the Android 2.0 (or 2.1) update, supposedly coming Q1 2010, but rumored to be next month. Currently it has Android 1.5.

There are emulators to download in the app market (NES, SNES, Genesis, etc, if that's what you meant).

The SD card is 8GB I thinkg, and I'm not sure about the internal but I believe it's less... not 100% sure without looking it up.

Depends on what you want out of a phone. If you need a phone to last more than about 5-6 hours on a single charge with very moderate use - stick to the Droid. If you want better sound quality and more home screens, go with Eris.

It really depends in your own preferences. Many of us easily get 36+ hours of moderate use out of the phone and find that the memory is more than adequate. You may not. All I can say for sure is, I'm happy with my choice.

If you need a physical keyboard then the Droid is for you. However, if you can use the virtual keyboard, then go with the Eris. The extra weight of the keyboard on the Droid is not worth it to me.

I switched. Primary thing I miss is the Moto Droid's screen and resolution. The Eris is just weak compared to it. Overall though I love the Eris more and do not regret my decision. The form factor and build quality of the Eris was enough of a reason by itself.

not a good idea to make a post about the droid in the eris forums - try the verizon forum to get more of a unbiased opinion (DO NOT ask this question in the droid forum, u will get bashed) ;p i own an eris and was very happy until i started realizing certain power disadvantages. im just not satisified with a new android OS phone that has 2 year old hardware in it. im also not happy that sense is not more enhanced. the eris is a closed-source phone, the android OS is open source (as it should be) and the moto droid is open source (big advantage) .. as for roms, i dont think he was referring to video games. if im correct your talking about the advantage of open-source phones, and you will only find that on the droid. one more thing is that the only reason we do not have a big update right now and more fixes is because it has to go google(android)>>htc sense>>consumer .. while the droid just goes strtaight from google(android)>>consumer. there is no messing with additional features.

both phones are great, im taking my eris back the day of holiday returns in which ill either (1) get the droid or (2) wait for the other supposed htc phone coming in mid january. i will put up with my LG phone for a lil longer if i have to.

Card is 8GB that comes with it, but obviously they'll let you keep your 16GB that came with the DROID. I use GameBoid on my Eris fine, works great.
Eris does not have turn by turn directions YET. Will some time in January.
Not ENTIRELY sure about the 256 though.
I'd say use it some more and really find out if you like it.. I know I was in the store yesterday and I was about to get the freakin Moto but that keyboard really just turns me away every time.
Plus the Eris will outlast the Droid. I saw a Moto in the store yesterday that had half the screen just dangling from the keyboard. lol bad craftsmanship there.

hmm.. eris outlasting the droid? not too sure about that. the ones in the stores are messed with a lot so u'd expect people being ignorant with them. shame on the store for letting it sit out like that. but i heard that the moto droid is a very solid and rugged peice of equipment. plus, with insurance you can always get a new one ;p

I don't know anyone including 6 sales reps, 3 HTC support reps, five CS reps and a corporate officer of VZW that can make that claim on battery life. All of these people say with moderate use you can expect to have to recharge your battery 1/2 way through the day. With almost no use I have to recharge mine. With no running apps and the screen dimmed way down. And nope, it doesn't stay awake all the time either (8%). So riddle me that.

If I could get even 12 hours of battery life out of this phone I wouldn't be switching back to the Droid.

My Droid was really tight but there are a lot of complaints in the Droid forums about loose sliders. That was a concern of mine especially because I never used the danged keyboard anyways. The phones in the stores are definitely beat up but I don't think you can totally dismiss this concern just because of that.

I dropped both phones onto carpet once each. The Moto's battery cover popped off. The Eris stayed tight. FWIW. I get just about 12 hours out of my Eris with moderate usage using the battery saving tips I found on here. Also my battery life has gone up some over the past couple of days (and less noticeable lag) after I installed Advanced Task Manager (NOT Task Killer which I heard detrimentally affects battery life). Again my experience FWIW.

Wow guess maybe I should wait to see if the Eris gets the 2.0 update because I need my google turn by turn. Also the battery life thing would be an issue for me. Maybe HTC will come out with a phone for Verizon with HTC specs

I switched from the Droid to the Eris and am not looking back. I feel the battery life is exactly the same. They both are battery hogs. The Eris feels so much better in my hand. I don't feel like I am going to break it. Or drop it. I hated the way the Droid felt.

My Eris isn't near as laggy as the Droid was. It just seems to perform better.

Don't wait to see IF 2.0 or 2.1 comes to the Eris. It IS coming. Maybe not right away but it IS coming.

You wanna know why He dropped his Droid so many times? Cause its a brick! That is one thing I hated about the Droid: I always felt like I was a half-second from dropping it. Solid? Maybe--in a way. But one slide of the keyboard and you will say, "Feels like it's gonna break". The slider on the Verizon (HTC) XV6800 (Mogul) was far superior...

How bout both? Turn by turn is FOR 2.0, 2.1, and even 1.6.

It is my understanding that turn-by-turn is part of 2.0 and even 2.1 for that matter. I would say the person in question is/was misinformed.

IMHO the only things the Droid CURRENTLY has that the Eris doesn't is the turn-by-turn and the slider keyboard. The keyboard sucks and as I said--turn-by-turn will be coming. Truth be told it isn't all that accurate and I'll stick to my GPS for directions, thanks.

It didn't feel like a brick to me. It felt solid, it is heavier than other phones but not too heavy. It felt no heavier than my BB. My slider was always firm on all three Droids, I luckily never had issues there but I hear it is a problem for some.

The Eris, however, I am always careful with because it feels like it is going to snap at any moment.
