I am ready to buy my first smartphone and I have been researching the EVO 4g for sprint and I like what I am seeing. But I hear that Sprint has some big announcement next month that could be a better EVO or a super cool windows phone. What do you guys think I should do? If i get the EVO 4g today and they announce a better phone next month, could I go and return my evo 4g and get that or is there a no returns policy?

If Sprint says nothing, there will be 3 weeks of daily media speculation over whether it's an iPhone or a dual-core Android phone. If they say one or the other, half the buzz will instantly vanish.

I seriously doubt it will be an iPhone, though. The bigger sparks flying will be if Sprint DOES get to have the iPhone5 along with AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile this summer, but gets told by Steve Jobs that wimax is NOT an allowed option. Especially if Verizon's iPhone 5 is allowed to have LTE. Personally, if Steve did that, I think Sprint would make a very, very big deal of publicly telling Steve & Apple to go self-replicate themselves.

I don't think that even Steve Jobs would be *that* insane, though. Given how crazy some people get about the iPhone, if Steve refused to let Sprint have wimax and refused to allow T-Mobile to have HSPA+ (but allowed VZ and AT&T to have LTE, on different bands no less), he'd probably find himself spending his September testifying before an angry Senate subcommittee demanding to know why (off the record) their (grandkids|staffers|*) are screaming at them and crying...

I just bought my wife an Evo Shift today and she loves it.

My only gripe with it (She will probably never notice) is the low internal storage they give you. There's a 340MB left after system files.

And they also include a whopping 2GB microSD card. 2GB???

As replied in another thread -

It's because the memory tools show post-system ram and only a single filesystem on rom - same as they do on the Evo.

The Evo Shift indeed sports 512 MB ram, 2 GB rom - HTC EVO Shift 4G Specs

Try System -> Memory with Android System Info by Electric Sheep on an Evo if there's any doubt - the ram's really about the same, and the rom is doubled on the Shift.

The 2GB SD card is replaceable of course.

As they're targeting the texting / email crowd as opposed to the media crowd, the Shift's smaller SD card makes sense. Or - they cheaped out to create an artificial differentiator - take your pick, I've no idea of the actual truth either way.

Evo = Evo.

I bet you are right. Wonder why they waited until AFTER CES. That seems to be the place to make your first and second quarter announcements.

That's the way Sprint done it for, oh, I dunno, forever?

Yet all you newcomers who are literally just learning what CES MWC CTIA and the like are, get your panties in a bunch about Sprint not leaking info when they've never really done it in the first place?

Come on guys.

Evo = Evo.

Except one thing. The Processor in the Shift runs circles around our Evo's.

Incorrect, per the links below.

The CPU capability is lower, the i/o and graphics are better. It balances overall and those differences are depending upon the tasks at hand.

If you evened up the clock speed @ 1ghz clock for clock the CPU in the Shift is better than the EVO. And the graphics capabilities are astounding.

Now if your not really using "intense" graphics, then you really won't see much of a difference stock vs stock.

And if the Shift can overclock to 1.6 GHz, it will surely outperform the Evo.

Until that day comes, that Snapdragon processor may run circles around this Snapdragon processor, but right now today, inside the Shift, clocked as is and without future root tuning, it's simply a general equivalent.

As I said - depends on use because the cpu core is a tad slower and the gpu core is more capable - at present clock speeds.

Probably your original statement was directed at the processor - mine was directed at the processor in the phone as configured.

No need for tangential arguments, we're probably on the same page.

But the 800mhz means less high (possible longer life of the device) and (generally) better power consumption.

I know a lot of people that would be happy about not having wimax on a SPrint iPhone (myself included). I believe that, without wimax, it would be a LOT harder for Sprint to justify a premium data fee. Even though they currently don't justify it as a 4G fee, it would be a hard pill to swallow for those that would be getting that phone with no possible 4G access. I'll be honest, I would probably consider swapping over with $10 less monthly since I did like my jailbroken iPhone, just got sick of the insane fees for the minutes/texts/data that I need.

That said, I would be willing to bet big bucks that the iPhone isn't our announcement.

I agree. I knew Sprint wasnt going to announce something big at CES. They have big plans and they didnt want to share the spotlight with the other carriers. I prefer them to have their own event. Whether it's the one in Feb. 7th or CTIA.
