T Mobile 3GB FUP reducing to 500mb?

Article in the register today saying they have backtracked on this and only new customers affected

Already posted above :p

Glad they backed down on this, would not have been impressed. Really sucks now though that in 18 months I have to look forward to renewing with a data package 83% lower than what I have now.

How on earth is this progress...

Meanwhile in the USA people have genuine unlimited packages and infrastructure to support 41Mbps mobile internet is being trialled

I've got about 15 months left of my 2 year contract. I regularly use my 3GB each month and was the main reason i chose t-mobile. In order to get the average per person amount up from their calculated 200mb per month i'm going to try and use as much as i can a month.
It may have negligible impact but it may encourage the improvement of the mobile network in the UK so it can support more than 500mb per month per person.

One person using a lot of internet won't have a negligable effect, it'll have no effect whatsoever. God knows how many billions of pounds it would take to bring our mobile infrastructure up to a level where all networks can offer 3 gigabytes to all customers, but from a business point of view it is much better to give 500mb. A sixth of the bandwidth, same income. Mobile networks are businesses, and you can't blame them for trying to minimise costs.

Don't get me wrong, I want unlimited high speed mobile browsing as much as anyone. But the sheer amount of infrastructure that would need to be built and the amount it would cost makes it very, very unattractive to mobile network providers. An inevitable product of the increasing number of smartphones was the slashing of internet allowances. In time they'll go back up. But it will be a lot of time.

I don't see why the infrastructure can't be improved. It can only be greed. As I said above look at America. It wasn't long ago that the UK were one of the leaders in building a 3G infrastructure.
Now look at it, in some states the capability of the mobile speeds they have there right now is rapidly dwarfing even our landlines...

Although I can see it from a business POV. Leave the networks as they are and people will pay

I've been checking my usage and I have to challenge the "most people only use 200mb" apart from a bit of Facebook, YouTube, checking BBC news and e-mail. I'm over 200mb.

It's nice to see that the development of smartphone is being dragged down by the networks. HTC and others make always on connected devices but I'm very sorry you can't use them because they won't let you...

Of course it's greed! With a few shining exceptions, managers of large businesses want money and care little for actually improving the service. But if you happen to know a few generous billionaires, maybe get them together over a meal and ask them nicely to invest? :p

With the mergers now there is even less incentive for networks to invest because there is no competition :(

The issue is there was no competition before really. Everyone just set about the same prices for about the same contracts, and if some were higher then others were lower to compensate. Mobile phones are very very competitive but the mobile network market is pretty stagnant from what I can tell.

If most people only used 200mb there probably wouldn't be a need for fair usage policy's.

no it really isnt greed
for example Vodaphone and o2 have the money and infrastructure to implement cell sites to accommodate data throughput. in some places they are already preparing for 4g
The issue really isnt the networks but the government legislation preventing them from installing cells everywhere which was implemented about 5 years ago.
o2 and voda have worked around the issue (kinda) by making and agreement to share eachothers sites to reduce environment impact. so if voda builds a cell site o2 are aloud to put their equiptment there and vise verse

the same goes for orange and tmobile as they have joined forces, instead they just roam on eachothers cells instead (one could argue this will result in less sites for both parties as you are sharing cells that are already loaded rather than sharing sites)

its important this happens though, if this legislation didnt take effect then our forests and natural resources would suffer even more damage just to accommodate our own human greed and need for faster speeds at longer periods of time and it will get worse as soon every phone will be "smart"

i think the people who are greedy is the consumer if anything

I originally got my Desire on Three because they were offering a 1gb monthly allowance, but unfortunately I had no signal at work so it went back and I ended up on Orange where I had to settle for 500mb instead.

It's a good job I have 3g Watchdog installed because even by being careful what I do online and making sure I'm always on my home WiFi when at home, I'm still easily going to use most of my allowance over the month.

Today during the 9 hours or so I was at work I used 22mb just with my normal Twitter syncing (including looking at the occasional twitpic) and a bit of light browsing. I don't go on Youtube, I don't stream online radio or TV. I can't or I would bust my allowance.

It's a shame that we can't anywhere near get the full use out of our phones because the networks don't let us.

Isn't that more of an arse than it is worth though?

I have 2 phones....the desire and a cheap one...my contract sim goes in the cheap one and my voda (net sim) goes in the desire....yea I know its a hassle but hell..does the job till I move to my new place and get a dedicated hardline in and then can just use my contract sim in the desire properly...its only cos I move around alot lately so cant really be tied to a hardline yet..

it is a lil expensive as such...a quid a day BUT its totally unlimited...I've gone for bout up to 10GB in one day no issues...only certain times in the day my speed is capped but meh I get by lol

I have been using wifi tethering on my htc mytouch fender le in southern California on t-mobile and it has worked perfect for about 8 months and now the past 2 months they have been capping me at 5gb per month, and this month i used that within 4 days!!! i do use it to stream my computer and xbox ect, but when i called them they said that they drop my speed down to 256k (dial up speeds)for the rest of the month. and im only a week into my billing cycle. my phone only supports 3g and im going through 5gb in a week, what happens when i get a nexus s and im running on 4g? this is ridiculous i pay for unlimited internet and im not getting it. i need the high speed internet on my phone that last more than 5gb's but there is no carrier in the us that will do that. Im soo mad at t-mobile right now
