When you get your shiny new gen8 Archos Tablet:

1. When you first connect to wifi, check to see if a firmware update is available to download OTA via wifi, or go to archos.com and download the latest firmware from there to your pc, then copy it to your archos via usb to install. v2.0.71 is the latest version so far.

2. next you will want to put the android Market on the Archos, go to
gAppsInstaller - Froyo - xda-developers and follow the guide to install it plus other google apps. (you need to sign up on the xda forum to view this thread.)

3. once you have 2.0.71 or later, go to settings/about device, find the power management option and set the processor to overboost, this will put the cpu on a sliding scale that allows it to run at speeds between 300mhz and 1ghz depending on the load its under. It will make the archos run much more smoothly. You should still see about 2 days of battery life when using the archos moderately.

4. the default launcher provided by archos is ok, but I found Zeam Launcher to be more responsive and stable, with smother transitions between homescreens. LauncherPro is also very good.

5. Download Dolphin HD browser from the market, its a very good internet browser that works really well on the Archos.

6. try alternate market places like SlideMe SlideME | Android Community and Application Marketplace and AndroidPit Android Apps and Games in the AndroidPIT Shop to find apps that may not show on the official Market.

7. use appbrain AppBrain Android Market - find the best Android Apps and Games and its android app from the Market to better manage and research new apps.

8. use the live wallpaper called MultiPicture from the market to set your wallpapers, otherwise they will be cropped by android in landscape mode. (android's default view is portrait as most phones are held that way).

9. use a cheap double cd wallet as a case for the Archos 101, the fabric kind that hold 24 cds, that have a zip around them and flimsy plastic pockets in. Simply pull out the plastic pockets which normally just slide in and out, these wallets are exactly the right size for the 101 and only cost about

thats very odd, sorry I dont know why its doing that.

try searching google for 'zeam' and '.apk' together and download the app from
mega download or similar. Its a free app, so you wont be doing anything illegal.

I did a Google search on my desktop computer and found Zeam. Looks like I can't download it though, only install.

Before I try to install Zeam on my Archos ....

Exactly what is Zeam, and how will it change the way my Archos operates?

Zeam is a replacement launcher, It runs very smoothly and seems faster and more stable than the one you get on the archos out of the box. Your archos has a default launcher which you use already, it is the interface you see when you are on your homescreen. It includes the app tray you see when you hit the app menu button and the different homescreens you flip though.

Zeam runs on top of the standard launcher, so you should remove all widgets and live wallpapers from the standard launcher before running zeam.

The first time you hit the 'home button' after running Zeam for the first time, you will get a message asking you to pick a program to associate with that action, tick default action and hit Zeam. Zeam will now be your default launcher.

You can easily go back to the stock launcher if you dont want to use Zeam by uninstalling zeam or by going to settings/applications/manage applications/downloaded/zeam, and hit the 'remove defaults' button.
Or install an app like homeswitcher that will let you go back and forth between any installed home apps (launchers).

Zeam gives you a customizable dock on the right of your screen that you can add icons to, It lets you resize widgets and lets you set the number of columbs and rows of icons on your homescreens. You can choose how many homescreens you want as well. You get a 'manage applications' and 'uninstall' option in the app drawer too.

Its very easy and simple, it wont effect your warranty and isnt hacking at all.

Other good Launchers are 'LauncherPro' or 'ADW.Launcher', but I found 'Zeam' to be quickest on the Archos 101. 'Go Launcher' is also highly recommended.

Try them all, you can easily uninstall them to get back to the launcher you have now.

Zeam is not available from my Archos. I checked Market again, and clicked on all of the six or seven items that come up, but there is NO Zeam coming up as an app to download from Market.

I then tried AppBrain, and Zeam Launcher shows up as the first app. When I click on Zeam Launcher, a page shows up with details about Zeam Launcher, but there is no Download button.

The only thing I can choose to download is Market, at the lower right, which takes me to Market ....

Error message:

"Not found"
"The requested item could not be found."

Do you have another android device that you can install it to and then backup the app as an apk file using astro or similar? then you can sideload the apk onto your Archos...?

or search google for 'zeam launcher .apk' and find somewhere to download the .apk file from like mega upload or fileshare. someone will have shared the file already.

for example mobilefiledownload.com (nudge, nudge, wink, wink...)

Its a free app, so there isnt anything wrong with doing this afaik.

It sounds like your market isnt working properly, it may be worth you wiping your device (warning, you will loose all apps and data.) and reinstalling the market using the latest gappsforarchos file from gAppsInstaller - Froyo - xda-developers but you will need to register as a user if you havent already. But thats up to you.

you may also have more luck with other market places line appslib, slideme, androidpit etc. they sometimes show apps that I cant see in the official market.

Thanks for the tips. I've tried downloading Zeam to my MacPro, but can't find a download ....

I've already reformatted my Archos three times. I'm not going to reformat again unless I have serious problems. Don't have the time to keep doing a reformat, and searching for all my apps all over again, and then re-downloading everything all over again. Would takes me several days or a week.

I'll just have to let Zeam go. I like the default launcher anyways.
