I think most of the negative comments are due to unrealistic user expectations of a first gen Android phone at Sprint. As a user of many many smart phones, from Blackberries to Palm to iPhone, my expectations are realistic and I think this phone is definitely the best smartphone I've ever used.

im expecting for my battery meter to work since its purpose is to tell me what the life of the battery is. i dont think you can call "user expectation" driving a car on empty for 60 miles and be ok with it.the wifi putting my phone into airplane mode is not a feature unless you think it is. the hero had a sms problem and it took sprint 41 days to fix it. 1st half of next year for 2.0?? we need a fix now.

Yes I can still use it like the day i got it.......as long as my battery isnt dead. My batery dies in about 8 hours with very little use and everything turned off. Also I cant get a location in google maps or with Navigation if im not able to see the sky above me. Also being charged for international text messages knowing that i have not sent any is frusturating. It takes 8 seconds from when i feel a vibration/ hear my ringtone until i see who is calling me.

I understand this is a 1st gen android device but a patch or something to help fix some of the more major issues would be nice. I love this phone. And for them to say that an update would be out in the first half of 2010 is crazy. I could be waiting until June with these bugs until it is fixed. By this time I am almost eligable for an upgrade......Come on

The iPhone 3GS dies in 8 hours as well (and you can't even change the battery so you're SOL), so does my Blackberry if I used it as much as my Samsung Moment. My Palm Treo Centro had slightly better battery life but it couldn't do half the things the Samsung Moment can do.

And my Samsung Moment battery lasts anywhere from 8-36 hours depending on use, which I don't consider out of the norm for a smartphone at all.

And blaming the phone for being charged for international texts you supposedly didn't send? Hilarious!! That's a billing issue, not a phone issue. Definitely sounds like you do not know how to handle your issues very well.

So come on, who's got unrealistic expectations??

I would expect the batery to die in 8 hours if i was using it. I did a test one day I charged my battery to 100% for the 4 seceonds it stays there. Then left the phone with nothing running and bt,wi-fi,and gps off just to see how long the standby time was. Of course i got some messages actually 36 to be exact. I did not browse the internet at all and made 3 phone calls for 10 minutes. I got exactly 8 hours and 13 minutes before it shut off after going to 3%.

I dont believe my expectations are unreasonable. I would like to use the phone and do what the phone is capable of. But doing this i find myself charging the phone 3-4 times daily. I dont have access to a charger all day or i would have no problem

Something's wrong with either your battery, or some app you've installed is sucking down the battery, or your phone is defective, or your Sprint signal sucks at your place. Don't blame the entire population of products as if it's defective. Bad apples get made, regardless of manufacturer.

I've left my Moment on idle / standby for 32-48 hours, and was fine. My Sprint signal is 4-5 bars, I installed 20 apps that all appear to work fine, and my battery seems to be average, compared to my other smart phones.

Just because something is wrong with your particular phone or environment does not mean the entire product line is defective.

If my battery life was as bad as you describe, I'd take it back to Sprint to troubleshoot. And I'd buy a back up battery to carry around. That will alleviate the problem of access to a charger. I also carry around a USB charger, called the ZaggSpard, that supplements power on my iPhone, Blackberry, and Moment whenever I need it. Because some days I use the phone more heavily than others, so I like to be prepared.

I guess indiana and massive have missed all the talk about the maintenance release that is on the horizon? Considering a beta one was accidentally released and someone has extracted good bits and pieces from it and has said it has made some ipmprovements to the general stability of the phone, bodes well for it to be released relatively soon. So I don't know why you're whining about 2.0.

And for the record. Full battery. Almost everything off I could possibly turn. Having uninstalled aContacts and Panda and followed it with a battery pull. It was in the red within four hours of 2 calls and about 10-12 texts along with an inability to get NFL Live going which pissed me off. In the red sucked because the car was dark and the stupid keyboard won't turn on, and I don't like using the onscreen keyboard which I had to resort too. And typing punctuation with that keyboard just blows. Granted I still might have had some decent juice on the battery left, but at 15% your keyboard light goes out, and you can't turn it on. The MR needs to get released within the next couple weeks.

And the above scenario doesn't happen all the time, just every now and then, and not just when I am stuck in a bad signal area. Today I was outdoors in a stadium that gives me good signal strength. I topped off the battery before the ride down and figured I could use NFL Live for a couple hours and send some texts with no issue. I'm sure NFL Live sucking could have something to do with it. I could care less about Sprint bloatware, but at least keep the thing working properly, especially when I am actually paying for it since it is a service that's included in the SE plan.

I understand what you are saying. Im not trying to bash the moment. In fact i love this phone more than any other phone I have seen. I have gone to sprint with my complaint and They have tested the battery as well as gave me a new one to try out. I received the same results. As far as apps I only have a few popular ones installed. Pandora, handcent ect... I get 3 bars of service on average here at home but at work i get 1 and sometimes enter roaming.

here is a break down of my battery life today....someone please tell me if this sounds normal so i can try and switch phones.

Took the phone off the charger at 1230pm....made 42 text messages, 0 phone calls, checked google maps about 6 times to see where i was traveling around the world today lol, and browsed the internet for about 20 minutes or so. It is now 1130pm and I just hit 3% battery remaining.
Does that sound about normal? I was hoping for a little more battery life out of the phone....BTW bt,wi-fi, and GPS were all off

This sounds like part of, if not the main reason, for your problems. Poor cellular signal will cause the phone to use its battery power up trying to connect or stay connected, even when idle.

I was at an in-laws place where the signal was 1-2 bars. My Samsung Moment's battery life was reduced by half just on idle. I was glad I had my ZaggSparq with me to recharge it.

If you don't get good Sprint signal, consider moving to another carrier where you get better signal, or try getting the Airave.

This doesn't sound like a hardware problem.

I hear ya, the value is the best on Sprint. If you wanna stick with SPCS, then just go buy some extra batteries, a USB charger like the ZaggSparq.

Hopefully they'll improve the signal in your area. I called Sprint before and complained about the signal in my area, and over the course of a few months, my coverage became excellent. Coincidence? I'll never know.

Had it about a month now and most of my own personal gripes with it was due to it not doing something as "good" (or easily) as my Blackberry.

As of now I can honestly say there are things I'd like to see improved upon, but there is nothing I can say is wrong with my phone and certainly not enough to call and complain to Sprint.

Why don't you go get a new phone that's much better? I doubt you'll find one. Every other forum here that I visit, from the Eris to the Droid, and to other forums like the iPhone, there are many whiners and complainers about each phone. I have yet to see a perfect phone without any complainers.

Since you're unhappy I suggest you give your Samsung up and move on. Life is too short to stick to something you don't like. Good luck finding something else better.

When the Tour was about to come out, people thought "this was it". Then a few days later the complaints started adding up and the lists of problems began to grow. The Tour is far from a ground breaking new design, it's more like a version update. lol

Also as far as the battery, if you are in an area that has connection problems and the phone is constantly looking for service, that will suck a battery dry pretty quick.

Just to throw my story into the mix, I get half the life out of my phone on a work day that I do on the weekend... and I use my phone for more "screwing around" type stuff on the weekend. It's totally the signal in my office... in some conference rooms I even go into roaming. It's a little maddening. My building is even on the edge of downtown buffalo, so there's no excuse... the only thing I can think of is since I can see canada from the office windows, maybe they don't want to put a tower so close to the border as half the signal is going to be wasted on a non-coverage zone. Maybe I should call and complain though, at least see what happens, heh.

after almost 2 months of use. im starting to get frustrated with the bugs on the moment. its getting annoying. does anyone feel the same? some things arent implemented that just annoy the crap out of me. like if the phone is not on a call the proximity sensor should lock the screen and the home button should wake the screen not the end button. lets not forget the many bugs that should be worked out. i officially have buyers remorse.

Out of my 5+ years on cell phone forums I have never heard a request for a prox sensor locking the phone.... that would get annoying... Is there even a phone that does this?

To use an example I encountered...
Lets say you're a business person who flies from one-side of the U.S. to the other. Upon landing you check your phone and while you charged it 2 hours before your flight and had the phone OFF during, when you arrive @ your destination and turn it on, are greeted with a 15% battery warning.

You receive a call while @ the rental call center "Hey, need you to dial into a meeting". "No problem". You then notice your phone is at, yes, 15% with a warning message. Assuming you have limited to no time, you dial into the meeting and state that you will have to drive to the hotel lobby and won't dial in due to low battery.

You drive to the hotel, spend 4 hours in a meeting, go out to dinner and chat for 5 hours, get back to the hotel to go to bed and charge the phone, and guess what, it's STILL at 15%. After charging for ~ 5 minutes before bed, it jumps to 70%. That was fast....but this isn't workable. Phone gets exchanged, and yes, same problem, so another device is selected, and life goes on.

Long story short: The battery life gauge issue _is_ a major issue to many users and brings the viability of this device into question for us.

For someone who travels, having a good battery estimate is crucial to the usability of the device.

Do you have cliffs notes of your post? It was seriously lengthy.

Bottom line is if you use it for work, carry a spare battery for emergency, and always keep the phone on the charger. It doesn't affect how long you use the battery.

And if you travel as much as you purport, you would have a car charger for your phone, as well as extra AC chargers in your bag. I have a complete set of auto/home charges for my phones at home, another set in my luggage, and one extra set in my laptop bag, so I am never without power.

And as many articles have stated, Android is not quite ready for business use yet, due to it's lack of compliance with the whole exchange encrypted thing as well as its limited support for exchange security policies.

This is why I still carry a Blackberry for work purposes. And I travel more than anyone I know, so it's why I have multiple smartphones, spare USB charger, and extra batteries.

I have to admit the bugs are really starting to bother me now. The initial shine has worn off and some of the bugs are really starting to drive me crazy. Especially the GPS and Battery.

Coming from a long history of smartphones (blackberries, Palm Treo and Pre, and Iphone) I must agree that this is the best of all of them, all around and balanced. The BB does email better, the Pre does multitasking better, and the Iphone does apps better. But the Moment is the best all-around smartphone out there, with or without bugs.

Having just come from a Pre, I'm used to the "baby glitches" in an OS. The battery meter isn't an issue to me (there's about 20 free and paid widgets that solve this easily and more efficiently than the stock meter), it's the battery life. From what I understand, the 2.x updates fix this. My colleague has a droid, complained about battery life on 2.0, got the 2.0.1 update, and he can last 2 days. That's pretty consistent from what I've been hearing, too.

Yes...these issues should be fixed right out of the box, small things that normally are not a big deal, but become one when left alone. Do I want an update? Yes. Do I want my phone to do things that others do out of the box, and well? Yes. But am I going to moan and cry about it? No. Because I understand that it is a new OS, and everything has glitches, whether it's a year old, 6 months old, or 10 years old.

The Moment may not be for you, and that's fine. Have fun with whatever you choose. But I have a feeling 2.x will be awesome, and the "god-send" we have all been looking for (for at least 3 months, until those bugs appear. ha ha ha)

Seriously though I don't think the majority of people are so much complaining about the bugs which as you said are to be expected with a new smartphone but rather the lack of an update at all (not necessarily 2.0). The two big ones that bother me are the battery meter reporting incorrectly and GPS issues.

Yeah the gps thing is quite annoying.... but not enough to make me return ny phone. Gps is an extra feature.... if I really need gps I just use my window mounted nav unit. All the main features of the phone work fine and a fix is on the way so in ok
