Andoird newby, help required with car stereo connection

Hi all,

I'm new to all this so please excuse me if this is a stupid question or if its in the wrong place.

I am currently looking at upgrading my Nokia 5800 to either the HTC desire or Samsung Galaxy S. What i would like to do is connect the phone to the car stereo via the aux socket and the 3.5mm jack, i.e with a cable not bluetooth.

I understand the music will be no problem but i can currently use this method for handsfree calls but it appears this may not be possible with the desire or the galaxy.

Can anyone shed any light of whether this is correct and if so is there anything i can do or am i stuck getting a bluetooth headset for the calls.

Any help much appreciated, thanks in advance.

I have an aux input in my car that I hook my mp3 player up to and on the odd occasion that I've not had my player, I've hooked my Desire up and the music was fine. I've had calls through it (you have to swipe the screen to pick up) and it sends the audio for the call through the speakers, but I don't have a mic in my car so I had to direct my voice towards my phone. It works ok to be fair, I just have to speak quite loudly to make sure it picks my voice up. I hope this helps.

Thanks ever so much for getting back to me. I think it's exactly what i want but just to make sure.

With your desire plugged to your aux socket via cable to the 3.5mm jack you can receive an incoming (or make outgoing) phone calls (which you answer as normal) which will come through the speaker and you use the phone mic to talk to the other person.

I use my phone as my mp3 player which is why i'm hoping it can be done, i like the ability to have handsfree calls but dont make enough to warrant car kits or headsets.

One other thing, did you need to do anything to the phone before or after connection to make it work?

Yeah that's exactly how it works. The phone just acts like it would if you had headphones in (without the mic splitter attachment) so all audio is directed through the car speakers and you just use the phone mic to talk. Just be careful if you're in the UK as the police could potentially pull you up for using a setup like this as you still have to interact with the phone.

Unfortunately, in the eyes of the law that's still a no-no. There was a case a year or so ago where a guy was sucessfully prosecuted for pressing the button on his bluetooth headset to hang up. I think the official line is that you must not by physically interacting with something that is transmitting or receiving data.

The desire does not have an auto answer feature but there are apps for that.
most of them like "Lazy car" not to work with HTC's for some reason but "autoanswer" seems to have found a work around because it specifically states that it does work with HTC. A friend of mine uses it and claims it works great.

I route my phone audio through my car stereo using the aux in on the head unit, just as the OP is suggesting works like a dream.

The one thing that I don't like about this set up (Samsung Epic) is that I use a bluetooth headset for phone related services. I use my phone for playing podcasts through the car stereo. If a call comes in while I am playing a podcast, the bluetooth headset does not work for the call unless I pull the jack out of the phone.

I wish that some smart person would develop an app that would solve this problem. (Hint, hint!)

that scenario works just fine on the Desire so you are probably posting in the wrong place ;o)
