The "always-on mobile network" setting - battery tip

Hes telling you guys to learn how to do a simple search before posting a topic that has been covered 100 times before.

Geee thanks for the "tip" about mobile network. We have known this the day the Eris was released.

Learn how to search.

If you and thousands of others already knew about the "Mobile Network Tip", what are you doing reading this thread, in the first place ?

many thanks pavirotten and rdalev. i do find the search application to come back with "no match" many times. here's another issue i am having which i know i already read about in here somewhere but now can not find it...(i apologize in advance for asking yet another question already discussed 100 times)

every time i send a text message, the phone switches from 3g to 1x and then back again. is this normal or can someone point me to the thread on this? many thanks.

(i did a search for this but the search application came back and said it removed my words "3g and 1x" because they were too common)

According to the ******* at HTC, it's normal. It's normal for it to drain the hell out of your battery by switching from 3G to 1X whenever you receive or send a text message.

interesting. many thanks.

Yep, Verizon has echoed this. They said that all voice and texts will show 1x. Only data is 3g.

In wireless controls > mobile network settings > "enable always-on mobile network" is NOT checked on my Eris and I am getting double the battery life now. not sure if this has been discovered yet or not. i have not noticed any drawbacks by doing this. everything still seems to run the same.

Does this effect widgets and whatnot from auto updating? (i.e. Weather, Facebook, stocks?)

Nope, everything works just as it did before. I don't think anything updates while your phone is asleep. All of your apps will update once you activate your phone.

"Activate your phone"??? you mean "wake it up"? I have tried to turn off the mobile network and I agree with what everyone is saying, but didn't think about it not allowing gmail messages to come through. I guess if you turn off mobile network it also doesn't allow for emails to come through whether on gmail or pop mail.

If you turn off the mobile network, then you won't receive emails. However, there is an option to "enable always on" listed under settings-->wireless controls-->mobile network settings.

We're talking about removing the check from that box. You will still receive your emails and can access the internet.

I just unselected "always -on mobile network" I'll play around with that for a few days. I'm curious if I'll get my updates, i.e. app updates along with automatically getting emails on gmail and my exchange.

I've received my app updates. As a previous poster has said, I don't see any drawbacks either.

Although, if you look at your phone prompt in the wireless settings, it says "may use more power on some networks". I'll be this all has to do with being on the extended network.

I understand gmail email will work, but what about exchange. Will it still check automatically? Extended network, what does that mean?
