Hello Everyone,

I am a HTC Hero owner. I am going, tomorrow, to purchase either an Evo or an Epic. I was wondering what your take in on both phones. What would you advise buying? I don't need a keyboard, but it can't hurt either. I just want the best phone, that is going to last me the next 2 years.

Which brings me to this question (since it is an Epic forum), is purchasing the Epic at this point a smart idea? Do you think it will stay current with andriod updates and apps, or will it be outdated in less than a year like my hero was? Otherwords, would it be smart to wait for the next superphone from sprint? (which I can't find any indication that there is a new one coming soon).

Thanks!

First off let me say that I have both. I use the epic everyday and love it. We WILL get 2.2. It WILL come soon. Being that there is no real news about 2.3 yet who knows if that coming. Even if its not, There are not as many updates with it as their are between eclair and froyo. Dont let that sway you. The camera on the epic is WAY better, The screen on the epic is BEAUTIFUL!!!!, The hummingbird cpu is one of the best out there, and the keyboard is the most spacious and easy to use on the market. Having said that, The evo has some def bonuses. The HDMI out is great. I prefer it over my epics DLNA. HTC sense is better than touchwiz even though I use launcher pro on my epic so it doesnt matter to me. The evo's screen although not a pretty as the epic's is large and in charge. My choice is the epic all day because of the hardware. After 2.2 I think there will be no comparing the 2. If I were you though I would wait to see what sprint has up their sleeves in Feb. Possibly EVO 2?

I've got both and both are AWESOME phones.

If your "deal breaker" is updates, you may not want the Epic as we are still waiting on Froyo (similar to how the Hero was waiting forever for Eclair).

The screen on the Epic, however, is simply amazing and what convinced me to get the Epic instead of the Evo.

The Evo has a kickstand and an extra .3" on the screen.

If you want the latest and greatest technology, I'd say skip on both as both have been out a while and I'm sure there is something new in the not too distant future (and if there isn't, both of these will still be around).

Regardless of how much you love your Hero (I know I loved mine), EITHER of these two phones will make you realize how slow your Hero actually is. ;)

Welcome to AF BTW!!!

The Epic was my first smartphone purchase, but the Evo was my first smartphone love. I loved everything about the specs on the Evo, but once I saw the Super AMOLED screen on the Epic next to the Evo, it was night and day. The clarity of the screen on the Epic is what sold me. Who knows what will happen with the android updates. Samsung has a bad reputation for support on their phones, so it's anyones guess if that improves with the Epic or not. Personally, running stock 2.1 and I'm completely happy. If we get 2.2, or skip straight to 2.3, I'm even happier. I just can't say enough about the SuperAMOLED screen and how great it looks. That's just my 2 cents.

I'm pretty much assuming that anything announced in February won't be released until June or so. The Evo will barely be a year old by then, I believe, and I can't imagine Sprint coming out with new high-end devices until the current top end devices are at the end of their lives.

Of course, I could be totally wrong, and if something amazing is released in March, I'm sure I'll have a little buyer's remorse (my 30-day return on this Epic runs on right about before we can expect to see a Sprint announcement at MWC if they don't announce something on 2/7). Then again, I'll have my upgrade this time next year, and by then whatever's released next (be it an awesome Android phone or something amazing from HP) should have some of the bugs worked out.

All I can say is it comes down to hardware vs support. If you care about the hardware you are using, buy the EPIC. If you care about the phone being supported properly, buy the EVO.

Samsung makes the best but doesn't care about support. When some asks me what is HTC, they are so new, I say it's the company that is going to make iphone change its game to stay in competition.

As an EPIC owner I love what it can do but I am pissed that Samsung dropped to ball on the consumer end. If I knew the EVO Shift was coming out, I would have waited a couple of months. I needed a slide out keyboard so I went with the EPIC.
