Help how do i make my droid a wifi hotspot?

thanks any links from this forum that you would recommended ?

The Droid all things root forum link is below. If you want wireless tethering then you will have to root like Chief said. If you want to stay stock then you can use Barnacle Wifi since it works with the stock kernel. The other wireless tether app requires that you change your kernel. They both require root.

If you want to tether with a usb cable (called wired tethering) then you do not need to root and can use either Easy Tether or PDANet both of which are found in the market. Enjoy.

I have a Droid 1 with 2.2.1. My understanding is that I can use it for tethering my Win 7 computer by turning the tethering on in the wireless settings. I further understand that I can tether via USB or setting up as a mobile hotspot. I understand that I will pay Verizon $20/mo for that feature. My questions:

When folks here say that the only way to use the phone for tethering is by rooting it, do they mean the only way to use it for free is by tethering?

When skilaufen says I can tether via USB with the apps mentioned, does that mean I can tether for free (minus the cost of the app itself)?

If I tether "for free" using a tethering app, do I risk being charged by Verizon if the amount of data transferred exceeds the amount I'm allowed under the "unlimited" data plan?

Many thanks,
-Scott

If you have a Droid 1 you cannot wirelessly tether without rooting. Verizon will not let you because of the Droid 1s hardware. The Droid 1 does wireless tethering through what is called an ad-hoc connection. Personally if I could tether wirelessly by paying Verizon I would (I don't personally believe in trying to scam something for free just cause I can).

Yes you can use the wired tether apps for free after you pay once for them. It is a violation of your terms of service but I have never heard anyone say anything about Verizon doing anything or even caring about it (one person posted once about Verizon questioning there data usage but they were using over 14 gigs a month and not tethering).

You will not go over a data limit on your phone because it is truly unlimited. The 5 gig limit is for the air cards not the phones and the 2 gig limit is for the wireless tethering on the phones that Verizon officially offers tethering. Using the above mentioned apps will use your normal data just like using your phone. Hope this helps. :)
