Going to Mexico, dont want data charges

ill be on vacation in mexico and would like some information about how to protect myself from insane international charges. im going to turn off background data and roaming data, but id still like to be able to receive and send texts. Is there anything i should know to make sure im not going to get a surprise bill?

Funny.. I am in the same boat and traveling to mexico as well. I would like to know the same info. I have a Google Voice account. I was wondering if Google Voice works through VOIP? Or is it bascily like making a regular phone call?

I was under the impression that w/o a global phone you will get hit with roaming charges in foreign countries. But with a Google Voice account is there a way to set it up where you can avoid this?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

google voice and skype do not work over voip or international data. unlesss theres some hack i don't know about.

to prevent data charges, go to your settings and turn off data while roaming.

but heres the thing... international data is 60 a month. and you can turn it on when you leave the country, and turn it off when you get back. normal data plan is 30/mo, so considering that, its only $1 more per day.

i was in asia for 10 days, turned it on when i left turned it off when i got back. only $10 more on my bill. sooo worth it, i used an insane amount of data.

and if you do follow that, make sure you turn on unlimited international data. just turning it on international data you will pay by the kb, and forgot the amount but it amounted to $20/mb. insane. $10 i used close to a gig in my 10 days and got charged $10. funny even tho you turn it on you get random text warnings. i called verizon to make sure i had unlimited on because i got a text saying i've incurred $1000.00 in data charges, but they said don't worry cause i had it on and it was just a standard warning text.

Maybe because of things like this: ... VZW no longer offers the international unlimited data plan. For Mexico, your choices are $30/mo for 75MB or $100/mo for 200MB.

Calling From Mexico

That is a shame. I loved being able to use my D2G in China without having to worry about how much I was using.

@b0nd18t :

First thing you should do is call Verizon. They have the latest on what their rates are. I believe text messages are .50 to send texts I don't remember how much is to send, because I don't use text messaging.

you could also disable data all together while you are there to be 100% certain. settings>wieless and networks>mobile networks>data enabled... uncheck that box.

and that sucks that they dropped the $60 unlimited data roaming plan... i used to use it all the time when i traveled to montreal. all i would do was call before i left, then call again when i got home.

Depending on what part of Mexico you are going to, you may not even get service unless you have the D2Global. If you do have service, you will be at .05c sent and .50c received for text messages. I'de suggest disabling your email and all push type services to avoid data charges. OR you could put Verizons new mexico data plan for $30/month(pro-rated) for 25 or 30MB of internet.
