Root Anyone here prior Eris owners/ROMers?

I spent the better part of last week rooting and ROMing my buddies Eris. Man it's strange how different these devices are even though they are both Android driven.

Anyhow what I was wondering is if there were any ROMs that stood out from the rest that freed up memory for apps? That device has a dreadfully low amount of internal storage (or at least that's how it feels to me coming from the DX and its 8 gig vault), so I set him up on a ROM that moved the cache to the SD card, or something like that, in order to make room for more apps.

Is there no way to move apps to the SD card on that device? I looked, but couldn't find a way to do it. I will say this, playing around on that device has certainly made me appreciate the DX and all of the memory it has so much more. I can only imagine if I'd owned an Eris for a while I would have been fantasizing about something like the X to come along!

Oh btw, I presented this question in the Eris forum as well. But the responses are rather slow going over there. And having noticed several previous Eris owners on this site in the past, I figured I'd just see what sort of ROMs I could get recommendations from here.

Outlaw71,
I saw your post over at the Eris forum and you've gotten some pretty good answers there. Scary Alien is very knowledgeable of the latest ROMs and you can also see if Erisuser1 is still around. The KaosFroyo Roms were pretty good when I had an Eris. Looks like somebody has put out a variant of that. The Eris is dreadfully slow after being on the X. I was one of those who was willing to forgo the new phones coming out in the next month or so because I had to get something faster.

Cool, just trying to get a wider range of answers is all, no disrespect towards those in that forum who responded to me or anything. I was sort of thinking that the Eris was aging, likely a large percentage of avid users had moved on (as JrzDroid did), and moved out.

As hard as it is to fathom right now, sooner or later this DX forum will dry up as well, as users move on to other devices... upgradeitis will get the best of all of us sooner or later. Oh yeah not to mention that roughly 95% of everyone on this board will have an iPhone by summer.

....NOT! Lol

Make sure to over/underclock it. Read carefully on it so as not to make a brick. You have to set the OC as Hero before you Perf unlock it. I have my wife's set at 710 to make it snappier than the 500 and 245 instead of 400 so it saves the battery. For such a slow device it sure sucks the juice even with a 1500 battery stuffed behind the stock cover. Ah well it was a freebie phone.
It's running the stock 2.1 rom so she still has flash. It does stumble under all that senseui though.

+1, Had my wife's Eris running at 710mhz as well on the top end. It still lagged at times, but definitely better than the stock 528mhz (IIRC) speed.

She has moved on to the Fascinate and likes that one so much more. At first, she didn't want to upgrade from the Eris, but we got two on a BOGO deal. After a few days, when I wanted to take my Fascinate back, she said she wanted to keep her Fascinate, even if I had to pay retail for my X.

However, it all worked out in the end. Verizon started doing BOGA as well as BOGO, so I was able to exchange my Fascinate for the X at no charge.

Outlaw,

We meet again! <insert evil laugh here, lol> :D

Just got done flashing xtrROM 5.0 on my Eris:

[ROM][GPL] xtrROM5.0 odex,cache2cache,apps2sd,jit,lwp,oc[1/23/2011] - xda-developers

This newest effort zach.xtr looks pretty sweet.

I'm still configuring it, but it shows 150MB of internal phone storage right out of the gate (after first boot). Also, since internal memory seems to be a high priority for you, you should have an additional 75MB available for app storage due to Zach's implementation of cach2cache. Here's a quote from the above thread:

Cache Location (Cache2cache):

By default, the dalvik-cache has been relocated from the internal /data/dalvik-cache/ directory to the internal /cache/dalvik-cache directory. The Eris comes with an internal /cache/ file block of 130mb that is not used! After reviewing a number of xda member file system usage reports (thanks xtrROM and xtrSENSE users!) the MOST reported use of this space was 5%... So by moving the dalvik-cache to this free area you now have over 150mb on internal /data/ for apps and over 75mb in internal /cache/ for dalvik-cache. This means that you can probably install close to 100 apps WITHOUT having to partition and move anything to the SD Card ext!

You can also move the dalvik-cache to your sd card ext or back to the stock internal /data/ file block.

To change the dalvik-cache location just run the appropriate GScript and reboot your phone.

So why does my Settings>SD card & phone storage>Internal phone storage only show 150mb or less? This is because this number ONLY reflects the /data/ file block on your phone and does not "see" the /cache/ block that is now being used for dalvik-cache storage. You can run the GScript report_system_settings script to see amount available in /cache/.

There's also a ton of other settings and options here (including the ability to use apps2sd, which you probably won't need with the 150+75MB available).

There's a ton of Eris ROMs out there, I just wanted to suggest one of the more highly-regarded ones.

Check it out, mate! Cheers again! ;)

By the way, its great to see alprazolam, JrzDroid, jreed2560, DroidEris1981, and xliderider all together in an Droid X thread! w00t! :D

Cheers! ;)

Glad to see you too! I see you are taking a break from creating cool apps for our X. In particular, BattMonX! How is it that you can figure out how to create something that a billion dollar corp can't figure out how to do?

lol...working on updates to it this very moment ;).

(Also, don't tell Steven58, but I called Motorola up before launch day and asked them to remove their fully-functional LED battery state indicator feature so that we could get Steven to ask for and me to write a replacement app so he and I could make millions of dollars! To my surprise, they agreed! Only trouble was...I released it as a free app! :D ;) :)).

Ha ha ha! I'm only a couple of hours from moto HQ, I may stop by and confirm that! By the way, the LG Optimus weather widget is available for the DX. Pass that along to to Steven!

You're a Steve Zuckerman at heart Scary!

lol...the name sounded familiar, but I did have to Google him :D ;).

I miss my eris. I still have a cracked screen on it. Never found a cheap way to fix it. :( I would whip it out and play with it again if I could!

Yeah, this thread http://androidforums.com/htc-droid-eris/42699-cracked-eris-screen-replacement-possible.html links to this site HTC Eris Droid Glass Touch Screen Digitizer Replacement Part which sells for $69.99 (ouch!). [although I'm betting you've already reseached this].

Several other AF threads show up on a Google search too:

http://androidforums.com/htc-droid-eris/64152-eris-screen-replacement-parts.html

http://androidforums.com/htc-droid-eris/30518-broken-screen-htc-droid-eris.html

that point to / reference eBay.

Cheers guys!

yeah I had done some research on it, I can find a replacement phone for the price of just the glass. But I don't just need the glass unfortunately, I broke the lcd underneath as well :( boo. But here pretty soon, when I get my next great phone, My X will become what my eris is now. Haha.. a memory!

An awesome memory, though!

I am still very impressed with my Droid X...I have not one complaint (okay maybe one: the LED battery thing, right ;)) about my X, even though I am "simply" rooted (no overclocking, no themes or custom ROMs, etc.)--my real root "playground" is still my Eris while my X is my day-to-day phone and the device that I do my app development on.

It's fast, perfect monster-sized screen (did you notice that a ton of the new phones being announced are all 4.3-inch screens ;)), gets great battery life, and has tons of memory. I can't imagine how cool a DX2 will be :D.

Yeah, I know there's still the locked bootloader thing, but to me, the X has been nigh perfect (and the Eris was (and still is, for some) a great phone in its day).

Cheers!

Great to see you guys! We may have all moved on but the Eris will always hold a special place

+1 Like Xliderrider, I sold my Eris to VZ for $132. So broke right now that I needed the money but I sure did love messing around with the settings on that phone. Trying to squeeze every ounce of power out of that little processor. If I weren't a complete phone junky, I'd probably still be happily using the Eris.
