Never had an ipod or used iTunes. My wife and I are both due for upgrades from our Eris'. I even asked her if she wanted an iphone. She is very happy with Android, just wants a "bigger screen". Also, she is not very techy, I usually set things up for her and she gradually uses them. I've never seen her use and be happy with any gadgets like she has this phone the last year+ and it's arguably one of the worst android phones. I think I'll look into the Thunderbolt and Bionic and then decide if it's worth going to LTE or just get a DX for another year or so.

I don't believe in magic so the iphone offers nothing to me. I never found out what was so good about the iphone in the first place. Everything they did with it was already out on the market for years, same as the ipad. I could careless about apple. I really could. I was also thinking about waiting until everyone gets their iphones at retail (there's a lot of people willing to do this on the verizon wireless community boards) and tries to sell their Droids on ebay. I think the market may be flooded with barely used phones and the prices will be decent. This way I get a couple bigger screened phones and keep the upgrades for when the really good phones come out in the next 6-10 months.

That being said, I think iPhones get trashed here more than they deserve. IPhones are great products for the masses. I hate my wife's ipod touch, and Macbook(and so does she), but a lot of people love them and have a great experience.

And they didn't revolutionize the cell phone market, they revolutionized how the masses SAW the cell phone market. It is no longer a market for the business execs, or the geeks. It is now a market for the masses. That is their ONLY revolution in the cell phone industry.

With respect to the mod. Not really. You want to know why apple completely changed? Apples total research and development department is 500,000,000 dollars. Yes, 500 million a quarter goes to research and development. 500 million is a great number because you know what else apple spends 500 million a per quarter on? Marketing! Yep, they spend just as much telling you why you should buy their product as they do developing it. 50% of the cost of developing the phone is innovation. The other 50% is marketing.

People want to buy it because apple tells them to.

If you look at it from a verizon terms, it spends about 1billion a year, give or take, on ads. that is about 250million a quarter, half of apple. Verizon sells a service, apple sells hardware.

Sorry for the sidetrack but this is important.

It is going to cost verizon about 5-10 billion dollars in the first year to do business with apple. 5-10 billion. What does that mean? Well to give a phone on the network, verizon will have to hand out up to 10 billion dollars. That is 10 billion dollars less in upgrades, roll out, and maintenance. Another company went down this road too? Who was it? cingular/att was considered the most reliable network in 2005. What happen since, they released the iphone. Att bleeds about 500 million to 1 billion dollars a year because of the iphone. That is money taken away from the network building.

There is no doubt Apple benefits from a high degree of consumer loyalty/"panting after" and a high degree of media hype. But, I don't see how you can say they did not change the market. Every phone manufacturer in the world has been trying to make the "iPhone killer" for the last 3+ years, with Verizon a willing partner since they turned Apple down initially and forced Apple to look to AT&T. Some of these have been sorry pretenders (e.g. LG Dare), some have been highly visible failures (Blackberry Storm), and finally, with the Droid phones, Verizon had a real competitor to the iPhone.

Now, 4 years after the original iPhone, all of the action in the cell phone market is in smart phones. Before the iPhone, the smart phone market was a stodgy business market; now it is very much a consumer market as well.

There is no doubt the iPhone will quickly become the biggest individual seller for Verizon, just as there is no doubt the Android platform will continue to thrive worldwide, albeit with a hit (perhaps temporary) to their growth curve in the USA due to those flocking to the iPhone on the powerhouse Verizon network.

I am not sure this was entirely the cost of the iPhone, but rather the lack of foresight on the part of AT&T in needing to build up their network for such a heavy hitter.
AT&T was always a piss poor network. Cingular always had a great network in Atlanta, GA. I dropped Cingular soon after the iPhone hit(got a Helio Ocean), but my network was already failing just with the additional burden of AT&T customers. The iPhone disaster was just the straw on my back which made me willing to shell out $200 to get out of my contract.

I always have, and always will give the iPhone credit. Apple is indeed innovative. Their phone helped push the smart phone market to such an incredibly fierce competitive level that our phones are basically little mini computers now.

No Apple didn't do this single handedly, but if you think we'd be where we are today without Apple, then you're dreamin. If they spend $500 million per year on marketing, more power to them, it seems to have paid off for them. It's their money to spend anyways.

I've never bought an Apple device of any kind. I'll likely never own an iPhone. And I feel like the iPad is priced ridiculously high. But I give credit where credit is due. And you don't get to being the leader of the cellphone industry without doing SOMETHING right. In order to be the best you have to beat the best. That's why Android has always compared itself to the iPhone.

Not Blackberry, Palm or Windows... Apple. Because at one time anyway, they were the mark to beat.

I will be ordering the iPhone tomorrow and will use my rooted Eris as a paperweight. What am I saying? It's a paperweight now. Just slightly better since it's rooted.

With that said, I can definitely see myself with another Android phone in a couple years.

I can see Eris users making the move, but it still seems odd to get a dated phone when the new round hits in 30-120 days.

I must be one of the few that never really had a problem with that phone. I got one the day after release and still use it to this day. My wife got hers last January and it's been great for her. Maybe it seems okay because we had an Omnia before that and it was awful. Couldn't do anything on it.
Anyway, I wouldn't mind a quicker phone and definitely need a bigger screen. The phone has replaced my laptop for casual web browsing.

For everyone I hear talk about an iPhone 5, there are just as much speculation that it's not going to happen until next year. If it does happen, there's also speculation that it will be a staggered release between carriers. No one has facts on this. It's purely speculation.

I'm also not all on board with this LTE stuff. It's not offered everywhere and it will likely cost more anyway.

Yeah, I upgraded to the Droid X from the Eris... The Eris just became WAY too slow and WAY too low of a model for me.
