Root amon_ra backup failure

Evo 4g
- Rooted using newest unrevoked method
- flashed newest mikfroyo rom
- flashed netarchy 4.3.1 cfs havs nosbc kernel
- flashed newest radio etc. combo pack
- flashed 1.77 pri because battery was draining
- updated PRL and profile throughout
- rebooted and tested the system after each flash, and created fresh backup before each flash using clockwork that comes with unrevoked
- followed all directions to the T (developers give terrible directions btw lol, forcing me to do plenty of research, thankfully im not ******ed, or am i...?)

+ battery still drains, wondering if it's because when i do wipes it erases netarchy kernel and/or 1.77 pri?
+ when attempting to restore backups, all came up with md5 checksum error
+ therefore i flashed newest amon_ra using terminal app
+ amon_ra fails every time at creating a backup, saying "something went wrong"
+ since recovery was failing to create backups, i randomly decided to "fix mismatched apk" or whatever, which suceeded, then tried to create a nandroid, which failed, producing this newest log
+ as far as i can tell things work (calls, txt, market), but i cant create/restore backups, and i dont know what is still flashed or not besides mikfroyo (obviously still flashed, tho i dont know how intact it is after all this)

1. what is the most proper order NOW to go about ensuring mikfroyo 4.4, netarchy 4.3.1, newest radios etc, and no battery drain (perhaps requiring downgrade to pri 1.77)
2. do i have mikfroyo + netarchy + radios combo + downgrade to 1.77 pri after doing wipes and/or "fixing mismatched apk"?

newest recovery log citing failure to create nandroid:

Ok, this is a lot of information, so let's start with a few of the more obvious things:

1) RA 2.2.1 gives you the option to select which partitions you want to backup. This is where it's failing:

Storing the ext contents in the backup folder.
Warning: --ext specified but unable to mount the ext partition.

Oops... something went wrong!
Please check the recovery log!

That would lead me to believe you selected the option to backup sd-ext. Is that correct? You should only select that if you have an ext partition on your card (for use with a2sd). If you have no idea what I just said, suffice it to say you should not select that. (side note - when the new RA 2.3 is released, it will not error out when you do that; it'll just skip it). Anyway, that explains why you can't make nandroid backups. Just don't select that option, and you should be good. Of course, if you're not doing that, it's a different problem, but that would be weird based on what the log says.

2) Regarding your inability to restore nandroid backups:

a) Did you at any point attempt to rename any nandroid backups?
b) How much free space do you have left on your card? If you've made a whole bunch of backups, your card can fill up quite quickly. If you have little space left, certain processes will not work right.

3) We can deal with your other issues in a bit; let's see if we can figure out the rest first. Just one quick question that will help in a bit, what is your current hboot version?

4) Also just to answer some of your other questions, the only way to wipe out your kernel is to flash a different ROM entirely. Wiping data/cache/dalvik or any combination of them will not touch your ROM or kernel. It'll just take your apps, app data, and settings back to ROM stock (the way it was when flashed, aside from kernel, of course, which stays at whatever you flashed last). As for PRI, the only way to change it is to flash a different version. No amount of wiping or even ROM flashing will change it (unless the ROM is flashed as a PC36IMG.zip from hboot and specifically includes a PRI update).

thanks for the encouragement, and the heads up on how to hide all that ;)

for the record, this is what im about to do, after which i will attempt to create a backup and check this thread for replies and to update:

factory reset via os > sd wipe via os > factory reset via recovery (amon_ra) > delvick wipe > attempt backup > flash mikfroyo > attempt backup > update PRL + profile via os (obv requiring reboot) > attempt backup > flash radios etc combo > reboot > attempt backup > flash netarchy > reboot > attempt backup > flash 1.77 pli > reboot > attempt backup

at that point i ASSUME everything should be flashed whether amon_ra is able to create a nandroid or not. will update with good news or else final log.

EDIT: IGNORE ALL THIS im currently reading the post above this which sounds promising, also thanks i love this community :)

ALSO: correct i did check everything, figuring if something went wrong i could do some research, since my only other experience with recovery was clockwork which doesnt give you the options to check or uncheck things.

OK you have it all figured out and thank you so much!!

Yes, I was renaming the folders to help my memory, i definitely remembered reading about renaming them yet i couldnt recall whether i was supposed to for good habit or supposed to NOT in case it would cause errors. For the record I'm sticking with RA 2.2.1 because I like it more.

So wiping/factory resetting etc leaves roms/kernels intact, does it also not remove radios, and everything in that newest combo pack?

And to be sure, If I successfully create a backup now, is this a reasonable order to re-do everything just to be 1000% sure its all intact properly?

factory reset via os > sd wipe via os > factory reset via recovery (amon_ra) > delvick wipe > attempt backup > flash mikfroyo > reboot > attempt backup > update PRL + profile via os > recovery > attempt backup > flash radios etc combo > reboot > attempt backup > flash netarchy > reboot > attempt backup > flash 1.77 pli > reboot > attempt backup

Excellent :). So you're able to both make a restore nandroid backups now?

1) You *can* rename the specific backup folder, but if you do, make sure it has no spaces or weird characters in it. If you want to be sure it will work, just make a spreadsheet or something to map the existing name with a description of it. That's what I do, and it works out well.

2) All wiping does is clean out apps and settings. The ROM, the kernel, and the radios all stay in tact. If you flash a different ROM, it will overwirte the existing ROM and kernel (most of the time. ROMs are *supposed* to include everything). If you want to change radios, you must either flash a RUU (same version as your current hboot version or newer) or flash the radio updates from recovery. Wiping data and flashing ROMs will never affect your radio version.

3) That's a bit overkill :). Granted, I appreciate your tendency to be careful over doing things to quickly. There is no need to do a factory reset from the OS. You can wipe your sdcard if you want, but there's usually no need. Just make sure you keep enough free space. Always backup your card to your computer no matter what. Before you flash a ROM wipe data/dalvik/cache (all three). Once that is done, you should have a clean ROM. You can make a nandroid bakcup from there just to have a clean slate to go back to if you want. There is no need to make a backup after updating profile/PRL. It won't backup anything new. Also, you can only update PRL when there's a new one. No need to keep checking over and over again. Also, you only need to flash the radios, pri, etc. once. Once it's update, it's updated. Done. Don't try to keep flashing it :). What I would do at that point is flash a new kernel, then restore everything the way I want it. Once it's done, then I'd make a nandroid backup. No need to make a new one at every step unless that step is something drastic that will cause you to go far back to restore.

4) As for the radio updates specifically, what is your hboot version? How old is your phone? If you have hboot 2.10, then you already have the latest radios, and never had a need to flash them. You only have to update your radios when there is an OTA newer than what you currently have, and you're going to flash a ROM based on that new OTA. You're flashing mikfroyo, so if you already have the new radios, don't flash them again.

5) At the end of it all, if you find that you need to downgrade PRI, that's fine, but you don't need to make a nandroid afterward if you've already made one. It won't backup anything new.

6) Specifically regarding your battery drain issue. Have you taken anything else into account? Have you verified your phone is sleeping when idle? Mikfroyo has spareparts included by default. So, plug the phone in, then unplug it right away. Let the phone sit for a few hours, then open spare parts, and go to battery information. Use the two drop down boxes to check your partial wake usage since last unplugged. If you see anything at the top of the list is using a large percentage of uptime, you have a problem. Let's start with that.

Confirmed I can create backups now, I haven't bothered trying to restore yet. I think you have answered everything on my mind right now. Thank you! :)

As for my phone, I got it about 3 weeks ago, who knows how long the store had it for tho...?

As for the battery, I'll try your spare parts tip and report back later (real life needs my attention for awhile, which is perfect given your directions).

First thing I'm going to wipe data/dalvick/cache, customize settings my prefered way, and make my first nandroid, before I start installing apps etc. Thank you!!!!!! :D :)

No problem :). Just go ahead and turn your phone off, then turn it on while pressing and holding volume down to get to hboot. You can find your hboot version there. If you have 2.10 (as I suspect), then you never had to update radios (that that it hurt anything to flash them). If you have an older version, then it's a good thing you updated them :).

One more thing! I noticed these nandroids are ginormous compared to clockworks. Is it because I checked the .android_secure?

How necessary is .andriod_secure, if indeed that's what's causing the huge size?

Yeah, adding .android_secure will make it big. The reason is that it includes apps you've moved to the sdcard, and it will build up quickly. If you don't back it up, you might have problems if you have differences between apps you've installed or uninstalled since making the backup. Basically when you restore a nandroid backup, it will look for things that may no longer exist, or it might just get confused. You should be fine, though. If you want to be sure it'll be ok, back it up, and accept the larger files. If you don't use froyo apps2sd, just don't include it. Also, feel free to not bother backing up things like /cache every time. You definitely want to have at least one or two backups with the wimax partition, but you don't have to back that up every time either. Just make sure you have one or two and keep them in a safe place. If you ever lose your wimax RSA keys, you'll need those backups.

I haven't been able yet to do the spare parts test you were talking about, but I'm convinced the battery life is significantly worse after rooting and with the new rom and kernel. Ironically, my main reason for rooting was to get rid of bloatware in an attempt at extending battery life, hence the mikfroyo + netarchy combo (ive heard that combo is good for battery life).

Over the last 2.5 hours, and actually using the phone for a 15 minute phone call and a single text, the battery is currently 77%. I don't think this is a result of the bloatware or stress on the ram/cpu because netarchy and mikfroyo are super optimized to extend battery life from what I understand. I can't imagine the battery lasting much longer than a single hour if I actually did anything with the phone.

I'm about to get setcpu, which unfortunately costs money and I don't even know if that will solve anything. Given what you know about my specific rom/kernel, can you recommend anything unique to my situation, or any apps (preferably free), or any resources for me to research?

EDIT: worth noting, I want to uninstall as many things as possible, with minimal exceptions. Even mikfroyo is fraught with bloatware (peep?! cmon...). Why is the battery draining if its SUPPOSED to be EXTENDING? It just seems backwards...

There are a number of things that could be going on. Honestly, you should just start by making sure your phone is sleeping when it should be. Check wake usage with spare parts. As for bloatware, certain things are built into the system. Sense is more than just a launcher. If you try to remove certain things, you could break things. It unlikely that bloatware is going to be draining the battery anyway. Also, did you try mikfroyo on just the default kernel for a while too? It's hard to get a baseline if you jumped straight to netarchy.

Ok I'll do the sleep check, would you mind explaining it one more time in a little more detail, or in a different way? I don't understand ANYTHING about spare parts UI... And if sense requires bloatware, I'm very interested in trying a different ROM, I just heard the most good things about mikfroyo, as well as the netarchy kernel, and figured they'd be a great combo (also consistent with many posts I read).

Oh, it's a good combo. You can can get rid of somethings. Start by looking at the Rooting for Dummies guide. There's a list of safe-to-remove bloatware in there. I saw your other thread. Look through that list for the stuff you want to remove. I want to say that some of those things can be removed, while others are a bit too integrated into the system. If you need help going through them one-by-one, let me know. It's been a while since I've looked for each specific one.

Anyway, for spare parts, since you're on mikfroyo, you've an ever so slightly different version. When you first open it, you'll need to go to the bottom and select the option for normal spare parts (or whatever it says; I don't have my phone in front of me). Once you do that, you'll see an option at the top that says "Battery Information". When you select that, you'll be taken to a page where you have two drop down boxes. The top one gives you various kinds of information while the second one specifies what time period. You'll want to check partial wake usage, so set the top drop down to that. The default time period is "since last unplugged". Leave it at that. The issue is that these stats are useless unless you unplugged the phone last at the very least a couple hours prior to checking. Otherwise, you're sample period will be too short. Rebooting the phone will basically have "since last unplugged" equal to boot time. So, plug the phone in, then unplug it right away, wait a few hours without touching the phone, then do the above.
