Help why is the back button so hard to mash

my wife has had an ally for about 6 months, since day one, the back button has worked liked CRAP, i thought it would get better, but it hasnt, has anyone else had this issue, and is there an answer to the problem....


Honestly its just the portion of the touch screen and how you press it. To the best of my knowledge all Ally phones have a less than ideal back button respones, i know mine can irrititate me sometimes.

Well the phone comes with a full screen cover out of the box :) but i ended up getting a refurb phone from Verizon and it has a cheaper thicker screen guard on it. I've noticed the button isnt as responsive with the non factory screen guard.


Definitely remove that screen cover. It will mess up the responsiveness of the buttons and also keep your proximity sensor from working properly. The ally screen glass is made of Gorilla Glass and is pretty resistant to scratches and dings.

So with Gorilla Glass you don't need a screen protector? Anyone else agree? I had a different phone before my ally that scratched without a shield and it really looked like crap. I'd be afraid of not having one.

Not that I doubt you, but I would never in a million years use a $400+ (without contract) smart phone and not have a screen protector on it... the one that comes with the Ally never gave me any problems. I don't think they'd ship the phone with a protector already installed if it was a problem, or if it wasn't needed. That wouldn't be cost effective.

Okay after watching some videos and reviews online (have never even heard of the Gorilla Glass material) it does seem to be pretty darn durable...

At the very least, you need to trim the screen protector around the proximity sensor at the top right (those 3 little dots) and around the back and search buttons.

As for the glass, I've had my phone since July. It did not come from Verizon with a screen protector, but I bought some, thinking the same thing as you. I had a screen protector on it for about 2 weeks and was experiencing the same issues as you. After learning about the gorilla glass, I removed the screen protector. All my issues with the buttons went away and to date I don't have a single scratch on the glass. My phone gets crammed into my jeans pocket with change, and sometimes I forget and put it in the same pocket as my keys. I've scratched up a few decal skins that way, but not the glass. So I think you will be fine without it.

I'm using the skinomi protector. I trimmed the lower portion to not obstruct back and search but didn't trim the top where the prox sensor is at.

I've not seen any adverse effects, but I'm not sure I would recognize them - if it was interfering with the sensor, what would be the symptoms?

Just wanted to throw this out there...
The "screen protectors" they ship phones with are not made to be scratch resistant. They are mainly designed to keep dirt/fingerprints off the device until it's in the customer's hands. Definitely not a replacement for a proper screen protector.

I personally no longer use s screen protector. I HAD a mirrored one, but I took it off, because it made the touch sensitive buttons malfunction.

Tried a couple different protectors...always interferred with the responsivness of the buttons. Have had my Ally with no protector for over 6 months, no issues with scratches, etc. In and out of my pockets, in and out of my coat pocket, on tables, on my desk, in my kids hands...screen is fine. It's a tough screen, but I'm sure not completely impossible to scratch.

My 2 cents. I think they got the screen on this thing "right".

What the proximity sensor does is blank the screen when you put the phone up to your face when making a call. If the sensor is even partially obscured, the screen will often stay blank even when your call is finished. For a while, I thought mine was defective. Once I removed the screen protector, the problem went away.

Decal skins can also cause the problem if the area around the proximity sensor is not sufficiently exposed.

That's not really a cover (The one from the box)... It's a guard to ensure no damage while in transit.

I agree, I also believe that LG did it right on this device. I will say though, that my wife has a small scratch on hers, but there's no way to know how she got it. I'm typically much harder on my phones than she is, and mine is still perfect.

You know how women and their purses are. Filled with all kind of unfriendly things for phones. Like keys, compacts, nail files, nail clippers, and so on. A purse is a touch screens worst nightmare! :eek: Lol

When I first got my Ally, the Back button was very responsive, even with the original oem full-screen film that comes with the phone still attached. I was very happy about that, because the demo models that I had played with in the Verizon store had very un-responsive back buttons (actually the whole screen seemed kind-of unresponsive).

However, about 10 minutes after I first turned on my phone, it prompted me to install a system update (2.1-update1 I think). After the update, the screen responsiveness went down, and the back button became very hard to activate. Getting the notification bars to drop down (by dragging the top area of the screen) was also very difficult.

Just recently, in preparation for installing the Froyo update, I did a factory reset on the phone. Immediately after the reset, the screen was noticeably more responsive, and the back button / notification areas worked almost effortlessly! Just like it had been originally. I did another factory reset after the Froyo update, and the back button / notification drop-downs still work very easily. And I still have the original oem screen film attached.

I realize that doing a factory reset is a huge pain (having to backup and restore all your info and settings, re-installing apps, losing your text messages, etc), but it totally fixed the screen responsiveness on my phone.
