AT&T changes tethering/data plan!!!

First, the "unlimited" package you have is for your phone's use, not tethering...unless you have rooted the phone and are using the mobile hotpot feature in froyo, or are using a tethering app from somewhere other than the Death Star. Second, your unlimited package is not unlimited. It has a 5GB cap. I know, I still have one as well and I have read the fine print. Many providers do the same thing...advertise a package as unlimited, and then cap it via a "Fair use policy". It should be made illegal, IMHO, as I fail to see how it is not false advertising. Having said this, I haven't actually checked the policy in s few months, so maybe it has changed (probably not to our benefit, if it has).

Since sprint just upped prices I'd think we are ok for a while. Although if Verizon keeps 29.99fir lye phones that will be very enticing

What i dont understand is why carriers dont have a data pricing tier like this

$10 - 200 mb
$20 - 2Gb
$35 - 5Gb ( Old unlimited)
$45 - Unlimited
Tethering $30 additional for 5Gb

I mean you wanna tiered set up well here ya go and now its fair and everyone has unlimited and the options would be more, therefore more revenue streams. What do you guys think?

If its tiered building why even charge for tethering? And even still those prices are ridiculously high.

And even still if you were going that route make it pay per byte.$ 5 a gigabyte is fair and would still generate profits.

The prices are high because the average user uses less than 200mb and a small percentage uses under 2GB so those would be the most purchased. The other ones would be at least available so people who use more have options instead of getting hit everytime they go over. Also there gonna charge you for tethering so thats why I included it. Im not stupid i know its gonna be an additional revenue even if your basically getting double charged. Plus I dont believe customers would be willing to pay per mb

The real reasons the carriers don't go pay ber byte is because that would unlock the pandora's box of rate competition.

no it was actually an independent study on engadget back a few months. PS now that we see that tethering is required for the laptop dock we see why these prices changed

Engadget "independent studies" are hardly a credible source of information.

I mean seriously, this is the same company that listed a benefit of the VZW iPhone, is just by being an iPhone.

I don't know much (infact, nothing) about Sprint/Verizon but I don't think that 4GB for $45/month is a good price at all (ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE SOMEBODY WHO USES TETHERING).

Good thing for me is that I am usually somewhere in which WiFi (even tho I have unlimited data, I find WiFi to be faster than 3G usually) is available and only use about 1GB/month and very occasionally use tethering (Froyo's USB Tethering) tho when I do tether, I can easily use 1GB of data within a day lol.

I think I burn through about 1 Gig streaming an hour or two from my Slingbox.

Although HD streams over LTE can do it. The extreme speeds of LTE changes everything. We are litetallyrtalking nearly twenty times the bandwidth of 3g.
