Ok, so let's brake this up in numbers.

Considering you're like me and don't want to sell you soul for 2 years to AT&T, here is the pricing:

  1. Phone - safe to say, off contract, will be about $699 (+tax, activation, etc)
  2. Dock - $500
  3. Tethering - $20 per month
  4. DataPro - $25 per month

So, to get a netbook with a cellphone, it will cost $1,200 USD + taxes and activation, easily another $100.

So, a total of $1,300 for a cellphone and a keyboard with a shitty-ass screen that you have to haul around.
Oh, and don't forget the extra $45 per month (!!), which, considering you'll own this combo for at least a year, will come to additional $540 for year of ownership. That's on top of whatever wireless plan you have. So a total of $1,840 for a year of owning this thing. That's $153 USD PER MONTH.

If you want to get the 2 yr plan, it comes to $1,140 for a year of ownership, on top of whatever your current charges are.

To get this into perspective, let's look at what's in the market.
For the price of the dock ($500) I got myself an Acer AS1810TZ netbook/notebook hybrid about 4 months ago. It has:
  • 4GB RAM
  • 320 GB HDD
  • 1.3 Intel Pentium DualCore CPU
  • Easily handles 1080p video
  • Battery lasts for EIGHT HOURS (!!)
  • Full Windows 7 Ultimate OS
  • 1366x768 screen resolution

If you don't want the laptop dock, then why even get Atrix 4G?
Think about it:
  • You DON'T need 1GB RAM, nothing to fill it with without the laptop.
  • Camera is crap - 5MP
  • Unable to do 1080p video. Maybe in 3 years it will, heh.
  • Only capable of HSPA+. No LTE, obviously.
  • FroYo. No word on GB update. Seiously, top of the line Android phone with 2.2 when 2.3 and 3.0 are out?
  • Forced MotoBlur
  • Probably a bootloader locked to HELL AND BACK to prevent hacking and free tethering
  • Let's face it - phone's ugly and looks like an old fat iphone.

I think conclusion is pretty obvious. It's quite entertaining to watch how AT&T keeps building itself a coffin, while repeatedly shooting itself in a leg, while drinking poison by the gallons.

I agree with everything you say. I was so totally ready to put down money for this thing. They have lost me.

DarkDvr. It's clear you have a personal bias against the Atrix 4g, don't bring your personal bias and troll style comments on here and make it sound like everyone feels the same way. $65/mo for the top phone in the game today is fine by me :)

- Don't need 1gb of ram? Guess you live in a twilight zone where less is more
- Camera is crap at 5mp? Tell that to Apple... who has a 5mp camera and said that more mp creates worse pictures
- 1080p video? Weren't you just the one saying that you don't need 1GB of ram and now your here contradicting yourself saying you need 1080p?
- HSPA+ is fine by me. LTE will be here in 2013... exactly when the Atrix 2 year contract is up and I will upgrade at that time
- Phone looks very nice to me, again with the personal biases and passing them off like everyone feels the same way?

The fact of the matter is that the Atrix 4g is the best phone on the market today. Telling others that the top phone of the entire industry without an laptop accessory is useless is just plain foolish

No one is like you, fortunately. Some of us will be entering or renewing contracts, so:

$499.99 for dock and phone; which by the way is a ONE TIME cost.
Tethering and data pro (according to you) a total of $45/month
Voice plan, the cheapest one maybe $40/month.
+ONE TIME activation fee
+ monthly tax

Will probably run you about $90/month. Of course, unlike me, some people need more minutes, so adjust this accordingly.

Second, your argument about hauling the laptop dock around is stupid. You have a netbook, which is at least 10", so about the same size. Do you complain about hauling that around? No. So that was an invalid argument from you.

As for the second part of your argument, no you don't need 1GB now, but later you might. It's better to need it and have it later on, than need it and not have it. Plus it helps with performance.

The iPhone camera is 5MP, as is my Nexus One and many other top Android phones. All of which take good photos. Also, if you're serious about taking high quality photos, BUY A REAL CAMERA!!! Amazing the amount of idiots think they can be a photographer just because their phone has a camera.

As for 1080p, it CAN do 1080p. It has the Tegra 2 CPU just like the Optimus 2X, motorola is working on adding this feature after release. And if moto doesn't do it, some hacker/developer will. Less than 3 years for this to happen.

Who cares if it's not capable of LTE? HSPA+ will be fast enough.

2.2 is fine, there's only one phone with 2.3 out right now, and only because it's a Nexus phone. 3.0 is currently for tablets only too, so again, you're being a moron and not doing research.

Agree with you on MotoBlur -_-

Phone isn't ugly. It looks like every other phone.

I think the conclusion is pretty obvious - you're a Windows Phone 7 or WebOS user, upset that neither MS or palm/hp have brought you anything good and so you take it out of the best smartphone platform currently around.

Look, I'm not an ATT fanboy, but I don't get why people keep saying that ATT is shooting itself in the foot and digging itself a coffin and whatnot.

Business-wise, they seem to have a pretty good record of making smart decisions. Whether people like it or not, paying out the bucks to get iphone exclusivity for 4 years was a very smart move. Charging extra for a product that no other carrier has right now may or may not be a smart move. People will vote with their wallet, and time will tell. Like their quotes said, the laptop dock may be geared more for travelling business types, and if those corporate people jump for it, ATT may make some serious dough.

I do not have a bias against he phone, in fact, this is the phone I've been waiting for the most, ever since I started buying phones. I did a reasonable breakdown of pricing for informational purposes. If you dissagree with some/all of it, let's discuss in a respectable manner.

- Don't need 1gb of ram? Guess you live in a twilight zone where less is more
Guess you live in a twilight zone where you think every gig of RAM increases your productivity. It doesn't. If you need to carry 2 gallons of water, having a 50 gallon bucket over 20 gallon will not help, only make it harder.
- Camera is crap at 5mp? Tell that to Apple... who has a 5mp camera and said that more mp creates worse pictures
Well, that's a different topic of Apple being dumb.
Yes, 5MP camera for a phone that costs THIS MUCH is very low. 8-10MP would be far more appropriate. Even good old Incredible has 8MP and can shoot 720p stock.

- 1080p video? Weren't you just the one saying that you don't need 1GB of ram and now your here contradicting yourself saying you need 1080p?
Wha? I guess if you think RAM and video resolution are the same thing, then yes..
Yes, having video in 1080p resolution is better than having a video in 720p, EVERYTIME. Imagine that.

- HSPA+ is fine by me. LTE will be here in 2013... exactly when the Atrix 2 year contract is up and I will upgrade at that time
You have to know what's in the market. As one example, Droid Bionic, a very close competitor of Atrix, will be using LTE.

- Phone looks very nice to me, again with the personal biases and passing them off like everyone feels the same way?
Well, that was my opinion, obviously, and some people will like it. But what is NOT subjective is how non-groundbraking design is. It is simple and there's nothing special about it.

The fact of the matter is that the Atrix 4g is the best phone on the market today. Telling others that the top phone of the industry without an accessories is useless is just plain foolish
First, it's NOT out yet.
Second, if you're comparing phones that are not out yet, there are other phones which will cut Atrix a new one in a month or two. 4.3 inch screens, 16MP cameras, 1.2 DualCores, LG's "Amoled-killer" super-bright screens, etc.
So yeah. Get your facts straight.

Like what? All I can think of was the iPhone.

Honestly, I'm leaning towards buying this phone, but the price is quite off-putting. My contract with T Mob. ends soon, so as far as superphones go (and it should be a superphone, considering it's got Nexus One shoes to fill ;) ) this is the only phone coming out soon enough.

Calling me a troll is insulting and dumb

Saying that a phone will cost everyone $153 per month is insulting and dumb. Go away troll.

Guess you live in a twilight zone where you think every gig of RAM increases your productivity. It doesn't.

Riiiiiiight... just like 512mb of RAM doesn't make things any faster than 256mb

Well, that's a different topic of Apple being dumb.

Or an example of trolls being dumb and not knowing that Apple's iPhone 4 5mp camera takes some of the best camera photos of any smartphone out there.

You have to know what's in the market. As one example, Droid Bionic, a very close competitor of Atrix, will be using LTE.

So what? We are in an Att phone forum. Go to the Droid Bionic forum and troll over there...

Well, that was my opinion, obviously, and some people will like it. But what is NOT subjective is how non-groundbraking design is. It is simple and there's nothing special about it.

Cool you don't like how it looks. Want a cookie?

haha, now I know why I don't post in androidforums. I won't resort to your level and calling you an idiot, but I will respond.

No one is like you, fortunately. Some of us will be entering or renewing contracts, so:

Tethering and data pro (according to you) a total of $45/month
Voice plan, the cheapest one maybe $40/month.
+ONE TIME activation fee
+ monthly tax
Let's teach you some math, kid.
$499
+ 20 DataPro * 12 months
+ 25 Tethering * 12 months
+ 40 Voice * 12 months
+ 40 activation fee
+ monthly tax+fees, say, $10 (although it's much more)

Comes up to 499 + 240 + 300 + 480 + 40 + 120 = $1679 cost of ownership for a year.
1679 / 12 = $139.91 USD PER MONTH in your case.

Ponder on it for a day or two, and it will come to you.

And yeah, sorry, not gonna waste time responding to your other funny statements.
And btw, I came from N1 to Captivate, and will not leave android anytime soon. And Atrix is pretty good, and I really wanted to buy it, couldn't wait. Unfortunatelly, AT&T/Motorola broke it for me.

There are some valid points but it is obviously constructed to present the WORST POSSIBLE CASE SCENARIO.

Good for a chuckle though i admit. I dont think its AS bad as presented here, but that i hope this thread does not some how convince someone that anyone with issues about the atrix are just pure alarmists. My position here is that even when stated CONSERVATIVELY..the slant against the atrix is still fairly grim.

Basically if you get the 450 minute package, the base data package, tethering data, and unlimited text messaging, you are looking at about $105 a month before taxes and fees.

Exactly.

Amoritizing the initial cost of the parts over the 2 years is an extreme example. We all know the equipment is ridiculously priced currently. However to use the OPs example fully, you would have to amoritize the cost of a regular netbook and phone and contract over the same time frame....which would also yield a high month value.

I have no issue with that "value". My issue is that the dock a fairly weak piece of hardware for that it is and what it costs...nuff said there.

As far as the guys over at xda..their are NO BETTER guys around to talk to..but they are some CHEAP b***stards let me tell you...lol

Understandable right? They pay for nothing and hack everything so...

REally its NO SUPRISE that they hate this Atrix/doc situation.

Riiiiiiight... just like 512mb of RAM doesn't make things any faster than 256mb
Incorrect analogy. At 512MB RAM is a bottleneck, hence increasing it speeds things along. At 1GB RAM, for Android OS, at this time, there will not be a difference between 512 and 1GB. Read up on how Android handles RAM allocation.

Reason I'm here is because I wanted to get this phone, and comparing it to other phones in the market is what all of us should do.

I agree that this is the worst case scenario. Also, I think it's only reasonable to break down your competing purchases in such a manner, overtime, since many things (like phones) require monthly payments. Those do add up.
In my opinion, comparing prices in such a manner gives a better understanding of where your money is going. Too bad people here are too angry to see that.

You do realize you just bashed a biggest internet community of cellphone programmers? People who've been working sleepless nights, for years, to bring people free and reliable upgrades to their phones/tablets.

I suggest you re-read your comment and think about what you're bashing and what kind of person it makes you.

Actually just the opposite..i dont see being cheap and hacking everyhing as an insult.

Like you....i see it as a TALENT/SKILL/CONTRIBUTION/THING OF BEAUTY.

As i said right in the quote..there are NO BETTER GUYS AROUND.

I also said its no suprise they hate this thing..(which is contributing to your argument)

Sorry for the misunderstanding.

What are these numbers you are adding in/making up?

Man, what is it with people and math these days.
Ok, look:

$499 (price of the phone)
+ 20 DataPro * 12 months (20*12=240)
+ 25 Tethering * 12 months (25*12=300)
+ 40 Voice * 12 months (40*12=480)
+ 40 activation fee
+ monthly tax+fees, say, $10 (although it's much more)

Got it?
