Root Easiest Way to Fix the Lag?

Hey all,

My dad got the Fascinate for awhile and I've been playing with it. Let me just say the phone is slick. Only problem with it is that it is just SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO slow.

Compared to my Droid X... I'm glad I have my DX.

Anyway, his phone is root. He's currently running the stock ROM. I've checked out the FAQ and realize that to fix the lag, he'd need to install a voodoo kernel.

I'm not expert with this stuff, but before I dive into that. Is there any simple way to fix the lag on his phone? He's already turned off live wallpaper and running LauncherPro (thank god for that, it runs faster than TouchWiz).

The reason I'm hesitant to flash his phone is because I'm not the one to use it full time so if anything goes wrong, I won't be able to fix it for him unless I see him.

Any ideas or suggestions? My original plan was to tell him to sell the phone and upgrade to another one (we have an upgrade available..think Thunderbolt). But he likes the phone..

Anyway, thanks in advance!

voodoo doesn't fix everyone's lag. It never did anything for my phone and in fact made some operations slower.

You may also want to ask your dad if he really wants you to muck up his phone:rolleyes:

It only helps in certain circumstances. Write operations are 2-3 times faster with Voodoo, and thats a fact. If you aren't doing write heavy operations, you won't notice it.

Voodoo however doesn't excuse the fact that we have crappy movinand which is slow in itself. So its not 100% cureall, but the best you will ever get unless someone hacks the movinand firmware to work better.

Forget voodoo, its junk compared to a clean install of Adrenalynes DL30 Super Clean 1.0 Froto.....makes any voodoo look like molasses
Well remember the difference between 2.1 voodoo and non. Now by and large 2.2 rfs = 2.1 voodoo in terms of the apparent feel, but thats really the credit to 2.2. It will only get better with 2.2 voodoo no question about it

Voodoo has no place anymore unless they have fixed it to be completely safe and removeable. Last time i jsed voodoo even if you did everything by the book you could end up with a brick and this dl30 is far faster than any voodoo i have used

i dont think you really understand what voodoo is/does...or just jaded from a bad old voodoo experience (pre voodoo5 we all had them)

voodoo is commonly accept across all galaxy s phones as the the single best kernel/filesystem modification. voodoo5 worked with clockwork recovery to the point of there being no need to disable to flash roms or to backup/restore and could be disabled/enabled direclty from cwr

rfs is notoriously bad at handling system write operations...ie web browsing, downloads, gaming, etc. ext 4 (voodoo) is several times faster at this. is every single thing you do on your phone going to be magically faster? no, but its preferable to have it

the improvements in performance from 2.1 to 2.2 alone are big. however if/when we get voodoo5 2.2 kernels...the differences between stock and voodoo will be another large jump in performance.

its fine if you choose not to use a particular mod or something, but its best not to turn off others to something when the vast majority of the root community supports/uses it :)

Yeah like nitsuj17 said you experience is with voodoo4 and I agree it was not always pleasant. voodoo5 is a different ballgame. Since you dont have the experience I know you're skeptical. But having disabled and re-enabled voodoo5 over 20 times I assure it is a different universe from voodoo4.

well ill stay skeptical for a while yet, that voodoo 4 experience i had was enough to make me completely stop doing anything to my phone ( i took a couple month vacation from tweaking and left it at DH12)..........i researched it, spent a bunch of time making sure i dotted every i and crossed every t and the shit still let me down and borked my handset and by the time i got it all ironed out i was like F-it. not going back to that, cant trust it

And that is by all means your prerogative. Admittedly, to reject something based on experience with previous all be it different incarnation as well as a complete lack of direct personal experience is not how I would do it but then again we all arrive at our preferences differently. No one forces voodoo or any kernel mod on someone. Many fear or are even ignorant of things like UV or OC on the 2.1 kernels and they are none the wiser and dont know. Others know and dont care. Still others know and just choose not to. From the insider out it might seem strange to reject something potentially so beneficial. But such is human nature. I mean how often dont I take my cholesterol pills for instance .

Still in the context of this thread on easiest way to fix the lag. There is a reason its called voodoo lag fix. It does work. Skepticism is fine and welcome. This is an opinion sharing forum. But there is a difference between opinion and fact as well as ignorance and knowledge. I know some people seem to think of ignorance as a negative term. In reality it simply means lacking knowledge. Most who know me know I speak in analogies. By way of analogy the relatioship between voodoo4 and 5 is akin to 1944 Germany and 2011 Germany. So if someone wants to say 1944 Germany was bad and evil [like voodoo4] Im not going to raise a big huss and fuss myself. I had two borks with voodoo4. Voodoo4 made odin my friend [and this was before adrynalyne's cure all odin package] However, to say well if thats what Germany/voodoo was like previously must be its still the same bad news is just plain speaking without knowledge or experience. To compare the two processes is almost a disservice. The mere fact that the share the same name is an unfortunate association. Just as anyone of German ancestry [like myself] might be burdened of being associated with some former misfortune.

Its far too late and Im not sure where the soapbox came from. I've been friends with jamesnmandy for months so please dont interrupt this as an attack on him or anyone against voodoo per se. Im not a voodoo apologist. Merely one who in all aspects of life encourages making informed and educated decisions. Im a staunch supporter of the mantra its your phone make it the way you want it.

Many had bad experiences with old voodoo so its understandable to be sskeptical of it....but voodoo5 was much more user friendly, effective and full of extras (voodoo sound anyone)

But like saps said....in the context of this thread its the single biggest mod or thing to do to reduce lag and increase the performance of your phone....and the vast majority of the galaxy s root community would agree im sure. :)

Can you elaborate? What is slower with with Froyo? Web browsing?

I can't speak for nitsuj but IMO the browser in DL30 is slower all around. It seems to handle panning and zooming particularly poorly even in comparison to the stock 2.1 browser, voodoo or no. Dolphin HD fares much better, which doesn't make sense to me as I thought Dolphin used the system renderer anyway.
