Root [HOW TO]: Root, Install a Custom ROM, Fix the Market, and Add Flash

ok, i think i've got this for you.

1. use your computer to extract the cwmod_internal.zip. this should result in a file called update.zip and a recovery folder
2. delete both of the .zip files currently on your internal SD card
3. copy the update.zip and recovery folder you just extracted to the root of the internal SD on your g-tab. this is the top folder, do not put it in any other sub-folder.
4. power down your g-tab and reboot into recovery (volume + and power). this should install clockworkMod
5. reboot and delete the update.zip and recovery folder from your internal SD
6. power down and reboot into recovery again, you should now get the green clockworkMod screen i put in post #9 of this thread. if you don't, stop and report back to us as the rest of the steps are not going to accomplish anything. if it does work, use the home key to select "reboot now".
7. move the VEGAn.zip back to your internal SD.
8. power down and reboot into recovery
9. refer to alternate steps 12-18 in my original post to finish everything else.

GOOD LUCK!! we're all rooting (pun intended) for you.

Ok, held the buttons for 4 go rounds, the box and arrow came up every time...but nada, zilch...NOTHING.

I have no external card in, and the internal card shows:

FOLDERS: Android, backups, Books, DCIM, download, gtab.VEGAn.1.0, LOST.DIR

2 ZIP FOLDERS: cwmod_internal.zip gtab.VEGAn.1.00.beta5.1.user.final.zip

Do I need to delete something, put the external in with another program?

Any thoughts?

Yup! Just as long as your able to USB transfer from your laptop to your gtablet...this should do the trick.

Your internal memory should look like this...

FOLDERS: Android, backups, Books, DCIM, download, LOST.DIR,Recovery

2 ZIP FOLDER: update.zip, gtab.VEGAn.1.00.beta5.1.user.final.zip

As you can see between what you had before, you shouldn't have a Vegan folder (don't extract the gtab.VEGAn zip) but you should have a Recovery folder which you get from the cwmod_internal zip.

You should have two zip folders. the update.zip also from the cwmod_internal and the gtab.VEGAn zip once you transfer that zip file from your laptop. You shouldn't have a cwmod_internal zip.

WOW! I got VEGAn on!! I'm trying to complete the whole process. Titanium Bkup. sideload means from the SDexternal card?

It doesn't say to unzip first or leave and load to card. I took a chance unzipped on pc and then loaded it to G. Nothing happened. Program is sitting in USB storage.

Should I have unzipped on pc and transferred to sdcard2? Will wait til I hear back. Thanks again...excited!

glad to hear you got it!

sideloaded apps can go on either SD card, but you need to use a file managing app to install the apk files. if the app you are wanting to use is in .zip format, extract it to get an apk. if it is already in apk format, just stick the apk on either SD card. use a file managing app (ES File Explorer will work, i prefer Astro) to find and select the apk file, then you should be prompted to start app manager and install. make sure "install from unknown locations" is checked in your App settings or it will not work at all.

**EDIT** i just put a much easier market fix in the original post. it does not involve using Titanium (or any other app) and actually works better in my experience. however, sideloading is something you will want to know how to do in the future either way.

Yay! Did you make your backup in clockwork? Get to know clockwork and loading ROMS will be a breeze.

Get the market to work and you might not even need to sideload any apps.

Titanium bkup didn't load, Inwent thru the boot recovery method followed thru to install and it flicked really quick, didn't really install. It's not on my apps. list either. I forced stop Market and Goggle Frameworks, have I hurt anything?

Should I delete Titanium and reload. It's on both sdcards. I tried a re-install with the card out also. I can't find ESexplorer or Astro, are those dwnlds?

What's my next step? thanks again

ES was included with the stock ROM, i don't remember if VEGAn had a file manager bundled with it because i always download Astro. try this fix for the market:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2YcJdxJ24U

it doesn't require Titanium, so you won't have to worry about that issue. you will, however, need some sort of file explorer to install Flash and other apps not available for the g-tab in the market.

Quick Explanation of what clockwork does.

Main reason why Clockwork recovery is recommended for the gtab.

Clockwork can-

-Load custom ROMS that are in a zip file. Such as the Vegan ROM.

-It can back up your entire system, including the apps you downloaded and any changes you made like how you set up your homescreens, bookmarks, etc. Use the backup and restore function to do a complete system back up. Backing up a stable system before going to another ROM or changing anything that can affect performance is always a good idea.

-Wipe data/Factory reset. This deletes everything except files in your SD card both internal and external! Only use this when you are loading a ROM. Like if you decide to go from Vegan to TnT lite.

-Wipe Cache- Wipes data cache from all apps.

-It mounts your Gtablet to your PC/Laptop through USB just in case you need it.

You know, it's like you skipped Android 101 and dove right into Intermediate Android when you came into these forums. You're a brave man. :D

Solid Orange/amr405o,

My gratitude to both of you. I have everything on the G that you guys have shown me. Thanks. Will now look for swype, and one other thing. Which browser do you guys feel is the best. I was at B&N and could not connect with their wi-fi. Their window never came up that you check to be connected, any thoughts that's the last question in this "rooting" thread.

When I was at Best Buy looking at the ipad, there was a guy who saw me answering you guys on the pad. I told him about the G and he was going to check it out. Told him about this site.

Calvin
Thanks again

Thanks again

i currently use Dolphin HD as my browser, gestures for bookmarks is my main reason, but i also feel that it renders pages faster and more accurately than the stock browser. (no real data to back that up)

as for your wi-fi issue, make sure "network notification" is checked under your wi-fi settings if you want a box to pop up automatically. otherwise you have to go into wi-fi settings manually each time and scan for open networks. in all honesty, i have found that the prompt does not always work for me. luckily you can add a shortcut directly to wi-fi settings to your homescreen to make quick work of doing it manually. (that's what she said)

lastly, instructions for getting swype are here:

http://androidforums.com/gtablet-all-things-root/257747-mmmm-swype-working-vegan-5-1-a.html

they are a little complicated because i could not post a direct link to the apk per forum rules. install it with the instructions post #57 of this thread, check the box in keyboard settings, then long press in a text box, select "input method" and choose swype. it rocks on the 10.1" screen!!

ENJOY!!

SolidOrange "swype v2.6.48.12226 wsvga" goggling it only brings you back into the forum.
Anyplace else to get it? Don't want you get into trouble, you can email info to me it's cool. I'm not violating a rule by posting email? Let me know, I'll put up my gmail.
Thanks, the education continues...

pm me your gmail and I will get you the link. Trying to keep it off the boards as much as possible so I don't get threatened with the ban hammer, lol.

OK, so then where do I place the Vegan file, and do I need to rename it to "update.zip"?

since you should be using clockwork recovery, you can put it in any folder on your internal SD card, and you do not have to rename. i am almost certain that you can not flash a ROM with stock recovery unless you can find a way to use Z4root or SuperOneClick beforehand. if it is possible, then the VEGAn file would need to be in the root (top) folder of the internal SD and renamed as update.zip.

Put it on your SD card, you don't need to rename it and don't unzip it before putting it on your card.

Shut down the tablet, boot into clockwork by holding volume + & power till you see the second message appear in the upper left corner.

Follow the instructions in this thread, make sure you do a full data/cache wipe before flashing.

OK, I'm trying to do that, but when I boot into clockwork, the vegan zip file is nowhere to be found. Any ideas as to why it isn't showing up?

if you have it in the root of your SD currently, you may not be able to see it with clockwork because you do not have root access. try putting it inside any of the folders you can see after you choose "install zip from sdcard" in clockwork.
