I am new to droid phones as I have been on blackberry for years. I know with blackberry you have to close programs that are running in the background that take up all memory usage, but I am just looking how to close the internet browser. Is there a close option or do just hit the home button and leave it running in the background. Thanks in advance

You can just leave it running and use the home button like you mentioned. Some market browsers have the ability to exit altogether. I use Dolphin HD and I use the exit button all the time even though it's not really necessary. I guess old habits are hard to break sometimes.

Don't worry about closing apps. ATK and others like it are counter intuitive to Androids OS. It is written to completely minimize anything running in the background. If you feel you MUST close an app, just use the menu>programs>applications>running applications>force stop and it will do it OR download system panel or system panel (lite) and it will also do the job.

There is also an "Running services" app that makes it a one hit go to.

I would think that the way the Dalvik virtual machine runs the programs, it does not really matter how many programs are active at any time. Not sure though whether it may impact battery life.

I always back completely out of browser though it takes a second, then i kill it with systempanel, guess i'm kinda anal.
Only way i see it draining battery is if you have flash always enabled and there is a flash animation moving on a page OR if you happen to be on a site set to auto-refresh when you hit the home button.

Reason i always back out of browser is no matter what upon the next time you open it, regardless of what page you left it on, you can still use the back button to go through every site you visited. And i tested this AFTER i cleared history. Like i said, i'm anal

Try this, see if it saves a step or two, and prevents the 'history' issue.
Set your home screen to something that loads fast (or to nothing, if your browser of choice allows that). When done browsing open a new browser window then X out of the window you've actually been using. Now you can get out of the current window and close the app with only one 'back' required.

I'll be damned!! I thought i'd tried that before with mixed results. No matter what (even if i use my 'shortcut' to a bookmark on my home screen when i check my tabs (stock browser) it opens a google page. I close whatever page i'm on which takes me to the google page and all is good. Thanks Hoto, you da man.

I had the same confounding issue, because I really got anal with wanting the browser to be at my home page every time I start using it (I like beginnings and ends, I guess) so I took someone's advice, (perhaps Iowabowtech's) and started using the Dolphin HD browser, which actually lets you exit the browser from the menu. So no more back key!
