Thinking of taking the 2.1 plunge for new years.

Well, I was OK with waiting to see if we get 2.1 as an update, but my geeky side is getting the better of me and I think I'm going to root and install the Greek35T 2.1 on my Droid. I know a few people have done this on the forums here.

Directions at How to install: 2.1 the easy way - Droid Forum - Verizon Droid & the Motorola Droid Forum are pretty straightforward so I'm not too worried about the process itself. Anybody notice any funny things about 2.1 that I should know? No offense, but there are 50+ pages in that thread and I'm not about to read all of them. I've tried to talk myself out of doing this but I want to play with it too badly.

YOU DON'T LOSE GPS AT ALL! I don't know how this rumor got started but everyone I talk to has GPS functioning perfectly with 2.1, maybe it was something that happened to a few people. I was the first person to flash Greek's 2.1 ROM (besides him and whoever he dev's with) and I haven't had any problems with it at all. I use it almost everyday and it is flawless. Now the other bugs are pretty well known, keyboard backlight being the biggest one along with paid apps in the market and homescreen-in-landscape related errors. Keyboard backlight has a pretty good fix and the paid apps in market is fixed completely, homescreen-in-landscape bugs won't be fixed until we get a 2.1 DROID ROM officially from Google most likely.

I use my phone quite a bit and I haven't had any reason to go back to 2.0.1, although some people have reported random reboots I have never had them. My only suggestion is o use the original release in page 7 of the big 2.1 thread as it seems to have the least lag related problems, you just need to manually add the fixes which Fadelight has posted in the big 2.1 thread (page 10 I think).

So, let me see if I understand you correctly? Your statement implies that you feel installing an UNofficial release of ver 2.1 is LESS risky than rooting your DROID?

Nope. I just don't want to root my droid just to install the "Unofficial" release.

Installing the Unofficial release of 2.01 wasn't risky and didn't require rooting.

That 2.0.1 update wasn't unofficial though, it was the actual file Verizon was pushing out, someone just uploaded it so others didn't have to wait.

Thanks for that. I'm not too concerned with the homescreen landscape bug as I really don't ever use my homescreen in landscape mode, just apps, which I assume still work fine in landscape.

@ vincentp, quit being a wussy (like me) and JUST DO IT!!! :D

I'll be right behind you early next week. Things have just been too hectic lately.

I know, I know. I've had this phone since release day, so I'm being a baby about messing with it since it's been so damn good, I'm hesitant to do anything that might screw it up. 2.1 looks so juicy though, I just can't help myself.

You can also try humancyborg's new ROM. It was just released (today?), and it has some fixes not present in the latest Greek ROM.

I've got it up and running with all my apps and settings restored now and it seems slightly spiffier than Greek's .41. The keyboard backlight is also much more functional now (though still not perfect)

As always, the GPS works.

i dont know how to use adb, easier way?

You pretty much need adb to do anything "deeper level" with Android phones. It allows you to get to the command prompt on the phone and make the necessary changes to make changes to the phone's filesystem.

Basically, you need to replace the phone's default recovery image with a special one made by SirPsychoS, which will then allow you to use nandroid.

nandroid will allow you to make backups of your entire phone image, as well as restore them. The restoration feature is what allows you to load 2.1, as it is just a backup the developer made that has been wiped of personal data.

anyways, all you really need to use adb is download the Android SDK, extract it into a folder (I use C:\Android).

Then, from your command prompt (use WIN+R to run, type cmd)

then you just navigate to your folder

cd c:\android

then you can use adb to reach the phone's command prompt

adb shell

Was it hard?! I'm thinking for the official 2.1 to come out, then root after that just because the only thing I want is overclock really, that's basically it. :p

Naw. Just needed a couple of hours set aside so I could take my time and know exactly what needed to be done to avoid making a brick. ;) It's actually really quite simple.

As for over-clocking, frankly I don't know what you're expecting to gain. Any difference would be so minor, hardly worth the risk of frying the processor, doncha think?
