Almost every day my custom ringtones for individuals are completely messed up. I can go through and re-assign them, but the next day or two...they are completely random. This is driving me INSANE!!!

WHY would this keep happening?

The default ringtone gets changed too!!! and I lose all of my notification sounds. Has this happened to anyone else?

Help would be appreciated from this knowledgeable community!

Thanks

this happens to me, i was using zedge and for some reason the zedge tones are not correctly linked to the zedge ringtone folders even though you can see the right names in the selection.

i renamed the ringtones folder and then try to download again then try and it worked. so as i wont download again the other tones i just copied them over to /sdcard/media/audio/ringtones but this time i see them as the system tones not zedge.

of course it may be different in your case but maybe you can relate.

goodluck :)

Personally I would do this if you are not going to move the ringtones

Sign up for the free handcent account...save your settings. Uninstall handcent. Reinstall from market the new version. Log in and restore settings. I have not tried this but it may work.

Otherwise I will try and make detailed instrucrions on the method I use which is basically this
Make a folder on your sd card

Media.
Sub folders should be
Alarms
Notifications
Rintones
Zedge only (I put them here)

Ok...so theoretically if you put a ringtone in one of the first three....it" should" show up in the corresponding system list but that doesn't always work.

What I do...rename all of the ringtones. They all begin with a Z. I also remove the numbers at the end for cleanliness. I put them all in the zedge only file. When you go to select a ringtone you get a pop up that asks

Htcringtone picked
Zedge
Music
Make music the default

In this menu it shows current, system default, system, zedge, music

Pick music and scroll to the bottom. All of your ringtones ....all in one place to be used as whatever you want. Alarms...notifications...ringtones.

I put this out of memory so if I missed a step I will update tomorrow. There is also a neat trick for root users that I figured out but I have to run through the steps again. Basically you can put the ringtones in the system ringtone files so they always play...even if you are connected to a pc and the sd card is not readable by the system.

There are minor drawbacks to this...such as if your music application pulls all music files on the sd card without an option to narrow it down to just the music file on the sd card....its going to see and play those ringtones in shuffle play etc. I think the nomedia trick works on that but I haven't had the issue. Mixzing let's you point it to the correct music folder so this has not been an issue for me.

I've tried this, and yes, the account is free, but as far as I can tell, the backup and restore service is still a pay option.

In your case jb you could put your ringtones system/media in the corresponding folders. you can use root explorer in r/w mode.

the ringers will show up in the htc ringtone menu and will not be affected by app updates and will also play while you are connected to a pc as a hard drive

mr ed can adb also be used for moving/renaming the tones?

edit: i did the move and i can see the tones on options but it doesn't work, i have change the permission and ownership the same as the tones that exists but no luck :(

Mr. Ed, I am not having an issue with ringtones, I was just commenting that I thought the backup and restore from Handcent was a pay service... at least as far as I can tell. :D
