Blackberry style Wifi calls?

Hi!

I don't know if it's possible on the android but it would be more than usefull to me!
***UPDATE***
See last post for solution!

The blackberry has the option to call with the wifi or the 3g depending on the signal.

What I need:
The call to go through the wifi instead of the 3g.
The signal of the 3g is really low in the house and I can't take calls (Always drops).
I don't care if it takes my minutes and I don't care if it charges me long distances. Although, I don't want to pay a voip like skype.

Is this possible?

Thanks for your help!

Install the free 'Y5' app (in the market). It auto-switches to known WiFi hotspots when you're within range.

This is assuming you have a WiFi router running in your house that your phone can latch onto, of course.

I do have a wifi router and the phone is connected. Y5 is only to hook up to the network right?

Although, when I'm on the network. How do I do if I want to call through the wifi instead of the 3g?

Thanks!

Are you with TMobile? The BBs have UMA which is TMobile's wifi service. It will connect to your wifi but it uses minutes. I don't know if you can bypass UMA unless you can use something like Skype or Google voice or what the previous poster listed.
We have an Android and a Nokia on Skype. I think the Android Skype is wifi only. On the Nokia, you can specify. I think I saw a switcher app for wifi mentioned somewhere here.
You need a SIP account or service. That turns your phone into VOIP

I'm with Bell Canada so no T-mobile UMA for me.

For the SIP, is there free services out there that can call landline numbers?

No, Y5 connects through WiFi to the internet. Perfect for VOIP/Skype, etc.

Yes, but i'm looking for an app to make the voip call to the landline via my phone. It is already connected to the internet. I just don't know how to make it happen. Every program I found charges a fee to call a landline. Although, I prefer to use my phone minutes than to pay a fee. I already pay my monthly bill you know ;)!

That's probably your carrier, then. Your carrier would have to have UMAcapability added to the phone. TM was the only one that ever pushed it.
If you call say Skype to Skype, Nimbuzz to Nimbuzz, or Fring to Fring, the calls are usually free. Otherwise mobile to landline or different account will get a charge.
Can you and your other party agree on a service? Can the other party use a computer? Skype from mobile to computer isn't bad. The only advantage is the phone rings. My daughter grabbed the C6 as she can get the Skype call on the phone, and since we have a data plan, that can be used in an emergency. We can call each other on Apollo and the C6 with no charge. Text, too.

Ok, well it's not for one people. It's just that it really pisses me off to answer the phone in the windows to catch the signal :p I was hoping to connect it through wifi.

Oops, forgot to name the handset - LG Optimus One.

I'll check about that since I have Lg optimus Chic, optimus series might all have UMA?

here's more info on it...

Android 2.3 Platform Highlights | Android Developers

Internet calling

The user can make voice calls over the internet to other users who have SIP accounts. The user can add an internet calling number (a SIP address) to any Contact and can initiate a call from Quick Contact or Dialer. To use internet calling, the user must create an account at the SIP provider of their choice — SIP accounts are not provided as part of the internet calling feature. Additionally, support for the platform's SIP and internet calling features on specific devices is determined by their manufacturers and associated carriers.

What do you mean will IT be able to update your low end android? Did you mean "Will I be able to?" If so then I assume as you said above you have the LG Optimus CHIC right? From what I read it's not getting gingerbread so you'd prob need to wait for a custom rom or something to get gingerbread. Maybe someone else can point you in the right diretion for that.

Finally got that to work! I'm posting this for whoever wants to do the same.

I hooked up my phone with sipdroid and google voice and got google voice to work even if i'm outside the US.

I now have my google voice number to call my people from the wifi!
I can't receive calls on it though since it's a US long distance for people that want to call me. Although, it solves most of my problems.

See link below to get it to work.
