Root I'm rooted - Should I stick with the stock ROM?

Thanks to the Rooting for Dummies sticky, I've rooted my EVO. But I'm happy with Sense. I was actually pretty happy with the EVO bone stock.

My main reasons to root would be to wireless tether for free, improve battery life, remove Sprint bloatware apps that I wont use, and improve performance/speediness if it's without sacrificing battery. I also will not sacrifice 4G or HDMI.

I know I can download apps to over/underclock to help with battery life. I can download the wireless tether app. But will custom roms that say they have removed bloatware actually uninstall them? Or just hide the app icons? Also the apps that freeze other apps, can I remove them altogther? Or just freeze so they don't appear on the app list? Why can't I simply trash the app icons now that I'm rooted (God damn peep)?

It seems like my wants can be satisfied without moving to a custom rom. Would you agree?

Welcome and congrats on rooting. You are correct that you need an application to over/under clock, however, you also need a custom kernel, as well. A lot of members use setcpu but without a custom kernel... it won't be of any use to you. The process of rooting won't give you better battery life, some roms have slight tweaks to improve it...but as a general rule of thumb, your kernel controls battery life. Some/most custom roms will have bloatware removed completely [just as if they weren't installed]. As for freezing... I've never used titanium backup, so maybe someone else will chime in and give you advice on that. I would go back to the Dummies sticky and read a bit more. This link is available in the rom section HTC Supersonic/ROMs - XDA-Developers and should give you an idea what to expect from different roms... if you choose to do that.

Thank you. I've actually read quite a bit and if I decided to go with a custom ROM.... I thought I would try out Fresh. I think it still uses the stock kernel, correct? Is it modified in anyway? Could I just use SetCPU as the kernel stands? Or should I hunt for a separate kernel to use SetCPU with Fresh?

As for freezing and removing bloatware apps I would go back to the guide and read the freezing apps section certain apps can be frozen and our deleted but careful so apps can cause issues with your phone when you do that.there if a list in the guide on what is safe and what is not.

My recommendation is go for it and flash some roms see what is out there. Just make sure to make backups.

I have seen the list. I've noted that most apps that actually use the word "freeze" do not delete the app at all (as read on titanium backup wiki). But I guess I was hoping someone would read my question and know of a way to delete them out together.

As for flashing various ROMs, I don't think I'm really into that. I like everything the way it is. And once I have a day or two to work out my above wants, I'll probably never mess with it ever again. If I have to use a custom ROM to get rid of all these crappy bloatware apps, then so be it. But I'll just pick one and stick with it.

SetCPU should let you underclock the stock kernel to save battery life say when the screen is off. It will not let you overclock without flashing a different kernel though. I used Fresh for about a couple of weeks before switching to some others and loved it. It is a good one IMO to start with. Remember to make a nandroid backup before making any changes and try some others out too.

If you feel confident then there shouldn't be anything stopping you from trying some out. Word of caution: would be to follow everything like how you did to achieve root access. If you can do everything step by step and take your time, you shouldn't run into any issues. I'm only familiar w/ the roms I've flashed... which are miks, myns, and azrael. If you clicked the link I gave you, in the thread for every rom, it will show you what is included [kernels as well]. Although I would bet that it is a stock kernel [most use stock #15 or #17]. So if kernel is stock, it can not be overclocked...period. You must flash a custom kernel for those things to work. Perhaps try flashing the rom first and see how it runs "as is", for a little while. You can underclock a HTC stock kernel (to save battery) if you disable perflock through SetCPU....You can't overclock a HTC stock kernel though and will need to flash a custom one if overclocking and boosting performance is something you also desire.

I've read through that wiki several times. Many threads on the xda website actually. And I know I've read that it uses the stock kernel. But honestly I thought maybe it was modified in someway. Just thought it odd someone would make a superior/custom rom, then not tweak the included kernel at all.

And I guess I'm happy with the performance in general. I mean, if I can do something to gain performance without losing battery life (increased efficiency) then why not? lol

Kinda funny, I was the same way before I rooted...but then after I wanted to try 'something else'. But if you're content, that's all that matters.

Didn't mean to offend, just wanted to point out where the answer was [because I wasn't 100% sure and didn't check that specific rom]. And for sticking with the stock kernel and underclock [setcpu], sounds like a safe bet for getting some extra batt life.

if you want a stock like rom thats runs better check out the mikfroyo rom. it is heavily modified, but it is a sense rom and runs well, stock kernel. it has lots of things removed and added. [ROM] - [02/06/2011] - MikFroYo v4.5 - ReEngineered Sense - Still Fast. - xda-developers

but why can't you delete apps from the rom you are on now? if you have full root access you should be able to. but here's the thing, you're not going to be able to just delete them through your settings-applications. that won't change with root on any rom. you will need an app to allow you access. I use root explorer, its a paid app but I use it a lot. astro file manager and es file explorer might be able to let you do it for free.

the fresh is really just a stock rom. it has bloatware removed, a custom boot animation and a few root only/essential apps. but it will look and feel the same as what you have now. this is a good rom to start off with in custom roms, as all the leg work has been done for you if you are just looking to get rid of some apps.
