Help New NC user here! Need some help please.

Hi all!

Got my NC last night with the intentions of turning it into a android tab. I want to be able to surf the web, do email, youtube, play games, access the android market, flash, do light MS office style stuff, etc. Wish I could stream Netflix.... I think I need android 2.2 froyo at least and not really comfortable with the honeycomb stuff looking at the strong disclaimers.

I have a Samsung Fascinate running stock 2.1/Launcher Pro and had a stock moto droid prior to that so I'm familiar with stock android but not so much with the rooting process nor linux. I also have my MacBook so, I'm looking at my NC to fill the gap between the full on laptop and the phone.

Doing my research today and plan to get down and dirty tonight after work.

I have a few questions (forgive my noobishness if these answers are all over the place and I can't find them.)

1) should I update to 1.1 before I do anything?

2) what is my best bet in terms of which version of the root to use (nookie? auto nooter? internal? off card?)

3) once i complete one of these root procedures, do I then have to install a rom to get "x" version of android? Or does the root process do that for me? If I do need a rom where can I get a stable version of a 2.2 or higher rom?

4) what else should I do after this to get the bells and whistles going?

Thanks so much! I'm eager as a beaver but, as a first time rooter - cautious. I want a tried and true root that I can use daily and not worry about too much. Not the newest and greatest under development stuff.

You can root on 1.0.1 and 1.1.0. It doesn't matter...just follow the directions here: http://androidforums.com/nookcolor-all-things-root/273478-how-root-nookcolor-autonooter.html

If you just follow the instructions above, you will be rooted on Android version 2.1. There isn't much reason to go to 2.2 except for flash and updated Google apps (newest version of GMail, etc.).

So you don't want to get Gingerbread? That's understandable...it's not ready for "everyday use" yet. Fun and easy to play with though as you can just "try it out" by installing the Gingerbread image on a SD card. I had to try it and it's great...but not ready yet . Thanks much! After much research and forum reading, I think the autonooter is the way to go for me. I'm a noob to all things root. But, I'm very well versed with stock android from my droid 1 and Samsung Fascinate. Still reading lots - I want something stable, a "daily driver".

Last night I updated to 1.1 and then did auto nooter 3. All went smoothly (up to a point) thanks to great instructions. However, after booting rooted, I ran into some problems. Soft keys would not work (except for home - no root user privileges, can't be executed - or something to that effect), you tube only worked once, the market was very sparse, etc. So, I did the 8 interrupted boots with no problem, and got stuck at deregistering using settings. I really thought I messed it up at this point. Then, I found the power and home button reset online somewhere and was truly relieved to get back to kate and square one nook 1.0.1.

Anyone have detailed instructions on what exactly to do after that first rooted boot? All I can find is the initial sync with gmail, enable location, and launch youtube.

Which launcher am i supposed to select that first time? softkeys? Do I make it default?
Am I supposed to grant softkeys superuser whatever all the time that first time?
How do I get the market to display the rest of the apps?
How do I set up a good launcher to work well as a tab not a phone?

After Auto Nooter, unmount the SD card and format it or remove it all together before booting again. This is what most likely went wrong for you. You booted with Auto Nooter SD card in, which messed things up.

Go to the Market and download a launcher of your choice, install it and reboot.
Upon starting it will prompt you to complete using Home, Softkeys or your new launcher. Select that launcher and you are in your familiar Android environment. The N button will let you switch desktops/launchers. Home is the default NC desktop with the books. It worked for me last night perfectly.
I don't know how to make the market show more apps, but all the ones I bought for my phone were there ready to be installed on the NC.

to make the market show more apps turn the nook on it side in landscape mode.. then you can scroll down to all the market items.. some little bug in the system when you have it in Portrait .. hope you enjoy your rooted NC as much as I am enjoying mine...
