Because it is EPIC!
I've had skyfire since I first got my phone, but really only use it to view flash or sites in desktop mode. Overall, I think it is clunky and not that fast. Dolphin mini is faster, but I hate not having the zoom in/out button on screen. Opera mini is blazing fast, but butt ugly. Still looking for the perfect browser.

Dolphin Browser Mini is now officially the fastest Android browser. It has been tested by Phandroid.

Dunno who did that testing, but it sure didn't pan out that way on my phone. Opera Mini easily smokes it, on WiFi and on 1x.

I don't want to see the browser, I just want to see the webpage. If you mean it doesn't render properly, then that would be an issue, but otherwise, I don't have any problems with the looks, as I'm busy looking at the content displayed, not the borders of the screen.

Opera Mini is not neccesarily faster. The reason for why Opera is "faster" is because it compresses the images, so that way, pages load faster. If you do look at the images in Opera, they appear blurry or you see a loss in quality. Dolphin Browser Mini does not compress the image. You need to do an apples to apples comparison.

The images don't need to be rendered in full if you're looking at a preview or haven't zoomed in on the page yet. Why would I care if a Google image search shows compressed pictures when I'm going to click the link to see the full image anyway? It's about the page load time, not how compressed an image is. This is, after all, a phone we're browsing on. Reviewer tests mean jack to the average consumer, and as I've sold to/worked with all types of consumers, I generally know what's more important to them.

I would like to remind everyone that this is a thread devoted to "Favorite Apps". We each have reasons for an app being one we like to use. That does not necessarily mean that our app is better or worse than someone elses favorite app.

This is not a thread called: The very BEST apps. It is all about which apps WE LIKE the most as individuals. That is why there is a poll attached.

This thread is for sharing your fav app.

We all have different likes and dislikes. That's why there are so many different ice cream flavors and why there are horse races.

What a boring world it would be if we all liked the very same thing.

Thank you to everyone for your opinions and for taking the poll. Let's all be nice and civil so we can keep this thread going and unlocked.

And please continue to share your new favorite apps with us here. :)

Thanks!

~ Jazz

Well - hi there.

Did we forget that we have rules around here?

Here's my favorite: Attack issues and not each other.

Here's my second favorite: Stay on topic.

Here's my third favorite: When there's a post you're having issues with, you hit the !Report button attached to the left of it - you do NOT reply publicly (see my second favorite rule, above).

And here's one I don't want to have to get added to written guidelines, but - consider it part of Da Rules -
don't bicker publicly and then leave little notes to the mods in your posts.

Now - anyone with issues - PM me. Anyone carrying on further - we're going to pass Go, not collect $200, not get a simple infraction for disrespectful posting - we're going to go right up to the infraction for failure to heed a mod warning.

Now - I'm thinking everyone is immediately very, very cool and happy - yes?

I was in the the neighborhood - hope you don't mind a little outside kibitzing. :)

u guys should add applanet

We tend to avoid that one in general - our view is that it tends to be kinda full of warez, and warez - while tempting - are a good infection vector for malware.

Here's a cross-post for one of our phones, but I think it'll work fine on your Ascends:

SwiFTP - no more plugging in to the computer. Now the Shift is a WiFi network resource for photo uploads and music downloads by drag and drop.

No more "preparing SD card" - slower than USB but for the convenience, who cares?

how do I set this up with windows 7?

How to Link (Map) an FTP Server or Directory in Windows 7

With SwiFTP, they'll tell you the ftp string to input - it's going to look something like:

ftp://192.168.0.9:2121

You won't need the share name, but if Windows insists, suggest you try:

ftp://192.168.0.9:2121/sdcard

That ought to do it.

(Above is even easier with OS X or Linux.) The idea is - your phone becomes a network drive to your PC, but it's mega-convenient.

And I don't think that your phones come with DLNA but if you happen to have a DLNA TV or such, that's no problem, you can serve your media FROM your phone with this:

iMediaShare

If you have a lot of contacts - or - if you just want what might be THE jaw-dropping app besides Google Sky or Space Junk - then this is a must-try, it works great on ALL Android phones:

Gesture Search by Google

And - I'm noticing some references to task killers. In general - we find that's kinda like a drug for Android - the more you use a task killer, the more you need to use it - so I thought you all might find this thought-provoking:

http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-sup...task-killers-must-read-new-android-users.html

One last thing for fun (and _tap_ things, like compass and the sun - it does a LOT more than you think at first glance ;)) - Tricorder

Cheers, thanks for your time and bandwidth!

EarlyMon, thanks for that huge post, I see some things I'm going to read up on.

To add to your post, specifically the mention of SwiFTP, there are 2 other apps that I have tested which can do this:

Droid PhoneControl
WiFi File Explorer

Both will setup an IP address and port number that you can access with your browser to transfer files, etc. On WiFi File Explorer, you can configure the port number as well as a password, whereas you cannot configure the port number with Droid PhoneControl. Both apps only run when you open them and specifically tell them to start, and you must turn them off when you are finished.

Of those, the Droid PhoneControl looks best - very good.

I'm cheap. SwiFTP is free, and the phone becomes a network drive.

For remote control of my HTPC - RemoteDroid.

Sorry if the post was too long.

LOL Early!!! The post was NOT too long! It was GREAT! And thank you very much for sharing with us here. :)

It's nice to know what popular apps users with other phones are using and especially you Mods who are really 'in the know'. :D

What Blast meant when he referred to the 'huge' post was that it was a very nice big post!!!

I know how he thinks. :p
