TheUnlockr has released a guide for rooting your NC.

I realize there are a few of these guides out there but TheUnlockr has a good reputation for putting together guides that are comprehensive and really easy to follow ;)

How To: Root the Nook Color (AutoNooter Method) | TheUnlockr

Edit: It has been reported that Autonooter can't be used for NC with software version 1.2

I tried to use the winImage to copy the image file to my sdcard but the program fails to see the file unless i use the allfiles option to see the file, then it crashes when you try to copy the image file to the sdcard. Can i just cut an paste the file to sdcard or does it actually have to be done with a winImage type file program?

No, you can't just cut and paste. It has to be "written" to the SD card via that type of program.

Are you running WinImage as Administrator? I've heard people fail because they didn't run as admin...

i bet running in admin might have been it, i forgot to do that. Check that, i just tried that, and it don't give me the option to run that program in admin. Im currently running 32XPsp3
I think my problem might be that the SD card im using is only 1gig, so im gonna go get a bigger card

I read somewhere that you need at least a 128MB sd card...so I'm not sure that's the issue. Then again...I'd still try a different SD card.

Is there no way to perform the root without an external SD reader?? I think mine is messed it

Not that I have ever seen. You can always get a USB drive that you slide your sd card into if your sd reader is jacked up. Like this one: http://www.sandisk.com/products/mobile-memory-products/sandisk-mobilemate-micro-reader

OK I'm using a completely different computer and the sd card reader is seeing my SD fine, When I run WinImage (admin is shown on my icon as well), perform all the steps and when I click the auto rooter folder, the extracted file is not shown... not sure what to do at this point.

I'm not sure what's going wrong for you...try selecting "all file types" when selecting the disk image. Go back through the guide and make sure you are not missing a step.

This is the part of rooting and romming the NC that I have seen give people trouble. You're not the first to have issues trying to burn that image to an SD Card.

Yea, check "All file types" in the Browse window, or try a different burning program as I noticed one program didnt show .img files and didnt give an option to view All file types.

It was "clicking all files" that was holding me back for a day and half, you guys were absolutely correct... I think my anxiousness is getting the best of me with this NC. I already can't get it to boot up/power on. Since I have the weekend off from work, I will take my time tonight and try restoring the device, hopefully I can come back to this thread with less questions and more thanks for all of you alls help, lol.

Hey Android crew... So I'm pretty sure I've done everything correctly. I unzipped it, got winimage to recognize the file (had to use "all file types" though) now when I put the sd card into the nook it wont boot up though. it wont turn on at all. I have to take it out and then it finally responds to the on button... Where could I have gone wrong?

Hey Colchiro,

I'm having a problem with step 1 of part III. When I go to drag and drop the .zip ROM in the sd drive, or even try and open the sd drive, I get a message that I have to format the disk before I can use it :/ I'm using an 8gb sd card and I dloaded the 8gb CWM version... Shouldn't the drive be partitioned? Why can't I add the nook-complete-restore.zip?

I've seen that when the SD card wasn't cleanly unmounted. If you reflash CWM to the SD card (ignore the message about formating) and then select "safely remove hardware" in the USB notification tray, it should be readable.
