Wow after not having my captivate for a full week, my phone started turning off by itself. I researched and realized it's a known problem. Long story short I took it back to At&t and got a new one. It's rooted with lag fix installed, it's running pretty smooth. I guess all is fine .... for now.

I am honestley worried about this issue myself. I have had mine since september without any issues. I am running perception rom, and I plan on restoring it to the stock OS should I have any issues with it randombly turning off

BUT with that said, if the phone shuts off randomly - how safe it it to restore to the stock eclair rom? I would be worried it would shut off in the middle of the restore process in odin - and permabrick the phone

Just because it randomly shut off, you say that they suck?? Unbelievable.... you could buy a Ferrari and have to bring it back to the dealer for a problem...does it mean they suck?? No.

Equipment can fail. The good part that they replaced it for you.

Now enjoy your new phone!

I think they suck because
1) they randomly shut down
2)they don't have a good gps
3)return button has been a known issue
4)Samsung has totally played man behind the curtain with support.
5)still no froyo update after 7 months

I am pretty done with Samsung, I like my phone and love flashing roms and I dont even have any issues with my phone after flashing it, but an average buyer should not have to build their own device. The OP is right Samsung does suck.

Don't forget the USB connectivity problems.

You SHOULD be able to take it out of the box, turn it on, and use it.

Didn't happen that way.

It burns my butt that I don't get the functionality promised of this device. AT&T and Samsung just don't care.

The attitude seems to be that if you want upgrades and fuctionality, you have to buy a new phone. We got your money, we don't care about you...until you want to upgrade.

I did contact Samsung and AT&T about fixes and software updates. I got the usual "Updates are coming, we can't speculate about timing, blah, blah, blah".
What that boils down to is that I am Mr. Mushroom...kept in the dark and fed $h!t.

I haven't had ANY of those problems you list. No shutdowns....GPS is perfect, buttons work great, etc. as for froyo?? I don't want it...the custom ROM world is MUCH better!

honestly i have nothing against samsung. yes its annoying that froyo hasnt been released but .......after my experience thus far custom roms, i think i would stay there as oppiosed to going to an official release of froyo. im quite happy with serendipity.

i realize there have been some hardware problems as well.......fortunatly i havent experienced this. but i have with SEVERAL phones before with problems. i had problems with my iphone, got replaced. problems motorolly razr, and a few others. hell ive had problems with a tons of different electronics ive owned.

bought a dell PC, soundcard failed after 2 months
bought a toshiba laptop, had screen problems
XBOX 306.......yeah. infamous red ring of death
olympus digital cameral randomly stoped working after 3 months

just to name a few. while annoying, in most instances the company has either replaced the item, fixed it, or i had an extended warranty. i think as long as samsung will replace the defective item with one that works, theres no reason to HATE them.

exactly, I dont have those issues either, my phone has had a rom on it since october, the only issue i did have was GPS, My phone was mint the moment a 2.2 rom was on it. samsung sucks because they shipped a couple of million phones with bugs and did nothing to fix it, if your device is good thats awesome but it does not make samsung any bit more ethical. my only point is that ALOT of people have this phone with a broken GPS, a glitchy return button, no Flash Player, and no Froyo in sight. Hardly a recipe for a great company, and the average joe should not have to cook a rom to get these features.

Imo there is a air of risk buying a new samsung phone because if something is wrong with it there is no way to know if samsung will provide a fix judging by their track record.

The Captivate is my first android phone. I love everything it can do, but am experiencing all the issues talked about in this thread.. let me say that it is frustrating to say the least. I use my phone for work, and shutting off on its own is not cool. I have missed out on several jobs because of it. That probably would have added up to well over a thousand dollars per job. So whoever says that they are cool because they are replacing a phone that they know is f#$%ed up, should think about the fact that Samsung and AT@T are not doing any type of recall announcement instead wait till one or oh thousands of their so called valued customers realizes that their phone is shutting itself off, can't connect to pc,..etc. these are major issues when paying top dollar for less than top of the line equipment and service.. anyway I am in the process of waiting for my refurbished replacement.. yes they even send a refurb. They so kindly shipped it priority for an extra 15 dollars..WTF now I have to pay to get my replacement here in less than 7 business days... am upset to say the least

I hope you're not using an old usb port, because surprisingly enough, my antec 900 case's front ports were too old. I had to use the usb ports supplied by my mobo (which is annoying since they're at the back of my case) but those are highspeed ports, and they give me no problems.

I am using a notebook with 2 USB ports. No luck with either one. My computer is 1 year old with win/7 64.

I to, had many connection problems .... even now it might connect fine then 10 minutes later not connect. Connectivity with 1.5.x is much better ... avoid the kies upgrade when prompted is the bet advice i ever received.

Anyway, just to amuse those already pissed off, go to the PC World website and read about the new dual core "
Samsung Galaxy S II".

The author tries to do some things and they don't work ... so its basically just a story about what Samsung says it "will do" !!!

Right, .... i'll bite!!!

well it is somewhat early for a new phone to be coming out, but they will replace them every year, a year from now we will be talking about the galaxy s 3. but im sure its in very early beta stages, thats why there are lots of glitches. if you find the pre release videos of the captivate its very slow because it wasnt running the processor that comes in the phones that were released to the public. if the phone comes out in june or so that will be about right, but they are releasing a beta phone pretty early so they may release it before the 1 year anniversary of the captivate being released, but then again we are talking about the galaxy s 2, which will probably be the international version, which came out much earlier than the US versions.

that being said my next phone will likely be a samsung, they get alot of unwarranted hate imho. sure they didnt release the update when they said they would, but they make their phones easily modifiable. and some phones did have hardware issues, but they replaced them no hassle. and their hardware is second to none, and thats why my next phone will likely be from them

Pretty much my thoughts to a T. Samsung has lagged with their updating for this phone, but now that I've gone custom ROM, it doesn't matter to me. As long as any sever hardware glitches allow me to get a replacement, there is no beating the processors and sAMOLED screens on these puppies.

I would flash a custom rom....if I could get the damned thing connected to my computer. I get the "USB device not recognized" message every time I try.

yeah i had the problem, even after updating the drivers. what finally worked for me was installing the kies software......which dosnt appear to actually work. nevertheless my phone allways connects properly
