Root VS740ZVC update failed, now I want Froyo - should this work?

My son's Ally *was* rooted with some of the stock apps renamed )with a .bak extension, to prevent them from loading) when the VS740ZVC update attempted to apply... and it failed. I renamed the apps back to their .apk extensions and unrooted the phone, hoping that the update might be retried. Having no luck with this, I let it go at the time believing it wasn't a significant update.

Now that Froyo is available as an OTA update I want to try to get it on the phone, primarily because he keeps running out of room installing too many apps.

I downloaded the previously failed update linked in this post, and am wondering if the following might work:

1. Copy the previous update as update.zip to the root of my sd card
2. Boot into the stock recovery and choose the option to apply the update.zip
3. Dial *#*#2432546#*#* to checkin
4. Goto Settings > About > System Updates and have the phone finaly realize that it's not up to date, and download and apply the Froyo update, or
5. Download the Froyo update manually and apply manually as above

From what I've read, a factory reset should also trigger the update, but my son doesn't want to lose any of his app settings, and I'm looking at the above as a possible way to get back on track with OTA updates without having to do a factory reset.

Is the above likely to work? Screw up the phone? Be a waste of time?

Well, you can dial "*#*#checkin#*#*" and it will automatically search for updates. The 1 from that 1 will not work. If you want to be rooted with 2.2.1 with bootloader, then you must follow tridents guide in the root subforum. If u dont care bout bootloader just use super one click root. Search it on google. However, tridents way is recomment if u lose recovery by accident.

You can install the lg mobile updater and do it via usb and your computer but this may delete all the apps and such, not sure about that. Also there are other guides in the all things root forum to go back to stock to apply ota updates.

LG Mobile Updater should work, but it's the entire ROM not just patches like the OTA update. You will lose everything so make sure your contacts are backed up with Google, not Verizon's app. You will also lose all apps but should be able to download paid apps for free in the market. You will lose fastboot if you had it but you always do the guide if you change your mind later.

Steps 1-4 from above worked like a charm (atlernate - step 5 - wasn't necessary), and my Son's Ally is now reporting Android 2.2.1 installed.

Also, I found that the previously failed update was still in the root of the SD card, and named manual_update.zip.
