So my kid gets a DX and the store loads...

I know this has been beaten to death, but...

One of the first TXTs I sent my kid was: "Don't let anyone tell you that you NEED(yes i know there are legitimate uses for it) a Task Killer.

Reply: "They loaded it at the store". (Cosco)

Oh gees.

Heh. Don't let your kid on this site! He'll have his dx rooted and the boot loader cracked in 1 day! Kids!;)

Costco cell phone kiosk employees knowing about cell phones are akin to the people in the mall flying the toy helicopters knowing how to pilot a real chopper. Scary.

Plenty of helpful people here. Ixnay on the askkillerTay. ;)

If you or your son don't want to install ROM's, you can root and I would purchase Titanium Backup Pro and have it freeze the bloatware-don't install. This will stop it from running and speed up your phone. I did this before rooting and it worked very nicely for pepping up the phone. The apps are then very easy to un-freeze and put it back to normal-bloated.

Removing the Bloat 2.2 OTA - (3 Ways) Super Easy & Safe, Safe & Easy, Free

ummmm...wrong-o, step one of the link you just posted.
Step one: Get root. If you do not want to do this, you can not remove bloat. Sorry.

it is a good idea tho, as that bloat really boggs down the phone and uses un-necessary RAM. find Z4 root and use that, then use titanium to freeze any system apps you dont want/need.

Not that kind of kid. Not into that stuff.

One of the first texts I got: "How do I set my phone on vibrate." I don't think rooting and ROMing will be done soon ;)

He's playing possum. He'll be able to make his DX fly a helicopter by weeks end. Never underestimate kids! They just don't want you to know they know their way around the phone so that you'll let your guard down and forget about putting parental controls on it... that way he'll be able to download porn on it!!!

Haha, you just have to think like a kid again. What would YOU do if you were that age? Lol

one of the guys at work just got a samsung vibrant (obviously he didn't talk to me before b/c i would have told him not to get that) and he was all worried about all the apps "running" in the background after he used them. literally took me 5 minutes to explain that he didn't need a task killer, and it was only slowing his phone down, and that Android RAM is different than windows RAM....lol

I dont get why everyone tells you to delete ATK.

In my experience task killer's are not set to autokill applications until you go into the application and configure them to. Atk for example does nothing unless you go into the app and tell it to kill selected apps. Its simple enough to unselect everything and then just select random applications that for whatever reason you want to close.

Now I dont have a task killer anymore, but they are not as bad as people make them out to be.

For me it's not about the memory the apps in the background are using, it's the battery they are wasting

Usually these apps "running" in the background are inactive. I found no improvement in battery trying to kill these apps when I first got my phone. Instead it wasted my battery because they would start themselves back up and use more battery and cpu.

even like games and stuff? I figured that by them sorta like saving your place and what not it would kill your battery. Guess you learn something every day

i've had full blown arguments with verizon employees about task killers. Needless to say, those that have been put in their place will no longer load advanced task killer anymore

ATK's are good. It's the lack of knowledge on how the system/os works that puts people at risk. So it's not recommended that people without intimate knowledge on how android works, load ATK.

Same with guns.... would you give a serial killer a handgun? guns are good, guns don't kill people. Serial killers kill people.

yeah they become idle until you go back in and use them again. Like most people are saying though, task killers aren't all bad, just the way most people try to use them.
