AT&T says Verizon phones can't use the web on calls. But... um... they can.

A friend and I tested both a Droid and Droid Eris, and both worked perfectly fine when taking a call and using the web. We called the phone, put it on speaker, and proceeded to use the browser or whatever web app we wanted.

Also, I tested web speed against an iPhone and it is really too close to call. Bottom line: In my experience, any of the advantages that AT&T claims over Verizon are disproven. What do you guys think?

EV-DO is defined as either: "Evolution-Data Optimized" or "Evolution-Data Only".

To test out that voice/data are mutually exclusive, you can try running Google Navigation while you are in a moving vehicle, and then initiate a Bluetooth call on the Droid. The phone call won't complete. (Note: I don't think you can bring up Droid Phone app, since you may be putting the Navigation app into the background - and inactive).

There are definitely simpler ways to test this, but this will ensure that you aren't on wifi.

Hahaha
That's why ATT voice quality sucks. The QOS sets priorities when ATT is browsing and voice calling. When there is only a call, the network is 100% on voice. Vice-versa with the web. When both are done at the same time, it's not necessarily 50/50, but the network degrades voice service to facilitate web browsing simultaneously. As far as we all know, VZW doesn't do this and probably won't or they will drop calls left and right like ATT.
That's how it works in a nutshell - similar to bigger network routers with QOS capabilities.

You were on wifi
CDMA doesn't support data and voice at the same time.

That's correct ... it can't.

However, the plus side with CDMA is that the 3G network is an overlay on the existing "voice" network so that you should have 3G wherever you have voice service (as long as Verizon has added the software to the processor at that particular cell site). That's the primary reason Verizon's 3G footprint is so huge.

AT&T on the other hand needs to do an "overbuild" at each cell site. Adding equipment and, I presume, antennas. Since their voice network is mostly in the 800 MHz range and the 3G is mostly in the 1900 MHz range, you won't get the same voice and 3G coverage from the same cell site. The frequency used for 3G is a much shorter wavelength and is also more susceptible to multipath and weather related degradation.

CDMA on the other hand is a spread spectrum type of technology and is somewhat immune to most multipath problems.

I have used google navigation while in a moving vehicle and I was also talking on the phone, (not blutooth) if fact when it was time to make a turn the gps interupted the call and told me to turn.

Actually, one of the main advantages of Android over the iPhone is multi-tasking, and you can run the navigation app and the phone app at the same time. The navigation app caches the route, continues to track GPS, and provides voice prompts during the call.

Try making a call THEN navigating. Or go off route. Not so much luck? ;)

Ok so this has been covered many times but Nav caches the route so you can still navigate when you have no data. On CDMA 3G you cannot reroute on a call and you cannot start navigating when on a call. Period. :)

You missed the point. We are talking about CDMA 3G data and voice, not multitasking. See my post above ;).

ahhh... I think I see where my mistake is. When we did the test, we probably went to a web page that was open in our browser, but didn't try reloading a new page. Dumb mistake on our part.

What I should be saying (thanks to your guys help) is that the phone can multitask while on a call, but not actually transfer data. It's also nice to know that navigation or wifi is possible as well.

Alright AT&T, you win on this one. ;)

i sure wish i could surf while on the phone. that way if my wife called me and reminded me about our anniversary i could immediately(while still talking to her)surf to a flower site and order a flower bouquet for 134 bucks before i ended the call....that would be real sweet.(insert eyes rolling smiley)

Plus, remember that AT&T only supports simultaneous voice/data when in 3G mode....which, in their case, isn't that often. When on their edge network, which is most of the time, it doesn't support this. We found this out the hard way while driving to Florida and my iphone friend constantly saying "WTF???"

There was another 3G upgrade path for CDMA networks that Qualcomm was developing called EV-DV. It would have allowed for simultaneous voice and data. It was dropped by Qualcomm when Verizon and Sprint decided to stick with EVDO and use VOIP for voice (PTT) services. There is nothing inherent in CDMA that prevents simultaneous voice and data, it was just never developed by Qualcomm. Verizon's decision to transition its 4G network to LTE and not pursue any further 3G network upgrades beyond EVDO rev A was probably the final nail in the coffin.

....who cares if it can't? My iphone buddy tried to rub this in my face the other day, and I replied 'how often do you even do that?'. He said never. Case closed.

I'm very happy with my switch from AT&T to Verizon, but at the same time, I've used data/voice at the same time plenty of times when I was on AT&T, and have been caught at least 2 or 3 times since moving to VZW with not being able to get data.

Most common cause: On the phone with someone, hit traffic jam, try to check traffic in maps to see if I need to reroute.

Easy way around this is to switch to a VOIP app for using calls, though this slows down the download of traffic data.

Not a deal-breaker for me, but it has annoyed me a few times in the 2 months I've been on VZW.

I just called my phone while reading this because I was afraid it wasn't letting my calls thru and I was curious, att is right, call came thru, I answered it, then went back to my browser, the screen was just the heading of the page and no text/images, so in a way they are right, but tech they are wrong because u can turn on wifi and take calls and browse,I was bored so I tried that too.

I'm lost now. Can you search the internet while on a call with an Iphone?

You can with Droid 2 and doesn't have to be on Wifi. Just looked something up online yesterday while on a call.

Apple seems to put weird restrictions on their phones so users get NOTHING for free. When they didn't allow Google Voice on the Iphone it worked great for my Blackberry. But as soon as Apple allowed it in, Google Voice was revamped.

The long time steady outgoing call number suddenly began to change with every call. For those of us who got rid of landlines for some free minutes with GV, were now screwed.

That's some serious power to make Google change GV for everyone because Apple can't allow a few free calls. Sounds like world domination.

I just want to know the answer to the iphone issue because I buy and resell them. I will never own anything Apple until they stop world takeover.
