Help so anyone got SWYPE installed?

Last I checked, the beta was open. Unfortunately, you can't install it through that method because ATT blocks downloaded installs.

The only way is to google the most recent version of the swype .apk and use the Wonder Machine.

Or maybe you can download the beta, then find it on your SD card in downloads and then use the Wonder Machine?

i was able to get it installed. you need to side load by doing the following....

1) Install the SDK (Android SDK | Android Developers) to your windows machine, pay attention to where you installed it to (might need to install java JDK as well Java SE Downloads)

1a) Once the SDK is installed, open the SDK AVD manager and install "Android SDK Platform-tools". This will create the '*sdk_install_path*/platform-tools' directory where the 'ADB' commands will lie

2) Install HTC Sync (HTC - Support)
SIDE NOTE: Not 100% sure this was even necessary

3) Download the .apk on your phone from Swype but dont install

4) Connect the phone to the computer as a USB drive, and find the 'swype.apk' (file name will be something like 'swype-installer.apk) you just downloaded (in the downloads folder on the phone) and copy it to the newly created 'platform-tools' directory in the SDK install location (where ever you installed the SDK to)

5) Change your USB settings to 'Sync' from USB Drive (either unplug and replug in, or from the notification area (make sure usb debug is enabled))

6) In windows, goto 'start' --> 'run' (can be found in the accessories folder). Then type 'cmd' and hit enter

7) if your this far i hop you know dos. if not, type 'cd\'. This will take you to your root drive. and follow this (if you took the default locations on the install)

cd program files\android\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools

8) Verify that your device is there by typing 'adb devices'. You should see a line with a bunch of numbers and letters. That means your device is there. Now type "adb install Swype-Installer.apk"

9) Keeping your phone plugged in, from the applications screen on your phone you should see 'swype installer'. Choose that, login to swype. Choose 'Start Download'

10) you'll then get the same security message saying it wont install DONT HIT ANYTHING. Run these two commands from the command line

-adb pull /data/data/com.swype.android.installer/files/mypackage.apk
-adb install mypackage.apk

11) then hit the 'review security' or whatever its called, and just leave that screen

12) Then you should be all set. Goto your message application, 'add text' from that screen, hold ure finger down in the typing area, release and choose 'input method' select swype and blamo, should be all set.

Sorry but I'm not about to go through all of that just to install an apk file. I'll wait until a simpler solution arises.

I guess if you root you can run similar commands through terminal emulator and install it from your sdcard

i feel there also needs to be an easier solution. One thing i didnt end up trying because this solution worked, was 'DroidExplorer'. It claims it will be able to do it, give that a try perhaps. I'll try it later tonite and give a write up on if it works or not. But i must say these instructions look intimidating, but it doesnt take much time, most of it installing and downloading the files (pending on your internet connection). Took even longer for me to find these instructions, but once the SDK is installed, this solution will be in place for anything else that needs to be side loaded, so it's a preparation for other apps as well

After years of using a BlackBerry with a full & superb qwerty keyboard, when I began embracing touchscreen smartphones a few years ago, my typing speed went from super fast to ultra slow.

Then came the Captivate with Swype installed.

I went to their site, watched six very well done, & short (2 minute) videos.

In mere minutes I was firing off medium to long emails as fast or faster than using a BB. Wow! I really like SWYPE.

Needless to say I'm thrilled to find this thread since it's been less than 48 hours since I bought my Inspire, and Swype is all I'm going to need to make it perfect.

Thanks to those who've contributed to this thread.

Ack! I followed Skroll's excellent instructions, and Swype is in, and selected, and... nothing. Everything appears to be working fine yet the original keyboard is still selected. How do I switch it to Swype? And yes, Swype is selected in Setting/Language and Keyboard... so what am I missing?
