A new icon showed up this moring on my status bar. It looks like the old style earphone that has the wire that wraps around the ear with the two partial circles showing sound coming out.

I have looked through the manual and it's not the "Speakerphone on" (similar).

Someone have an idea??

Do you have headphones plugged into your 3.5mm TRS jack? I think that is the icon for that.

Try rebooting your Sprint HTC Hero if you do not have headphones plugged in. It usually shows up if you have them plugged in.

Thanks for the reply but I had already rebooted several times. The icon is not the upside down U shape for the headset, it was the old time ear plug with the wire that goes around the back of the ear.

Well, anyway, I did find the problem and don't know why it was on. Some how my hearing aid compatible function was turned on! I turned it off and it went away....

Oh, well, hope it helps someone someday!

Having same problem with icon - glad to know what it is. Dumb question - how do I get rid of it?

It basically raises the maximum volume the handset can produce in the earpiece to a higher level than normal when the hearing aid mode is on. Here is a video that shows you how to enable it, so do this in reverse to disable it. ;)

The short answer is to go into Settings, then Call, then you will see a check box for hearing aids. If you uncheck that, it will be disabled. :)
