I was involved in the droid x scene when I first got the phone but have fallen off the boat a little. My droid x is currently on 2.3.15. I'm trying to update to the newest firmware and install the Liberty ROM. What is the easiest way to reach my goal? I saw:
http://androidforums.com/droid-x-all-things-root/254605-update-2-3-340-easily.html
about updating easily, but it says you can't flash a ROM after using that update.

I am currently rooted.

On the maderstock post it says "If you attempt to create a backup or flash a rom post maderstcok installation you're going to have a paperweight." Does this mean I won't be able to install liberty post upgrade?

No, it means there is a precise sequence that you have to follow. Do it *exactly* the way he tells you, and you'll be OK. If you do anything other than what he tells you to do, you could end up with a bricked phone.
