[copied from XDA; just wanted some add'l exposure]

I am trying to flash a ROM, but I simply can't get ODIN to work properly. I've used ODIN 1-click and the other ODIN and both get stuck - the 1-Click gets stuck on file analysis and in other ODIN version got stuck on Initialization (two steps AFTER file analysis). It freezes either way... and YES, I did get the Com port assignment; all USB drivers are loaded/installed.

Needless to say, my phone now reboots with the stupid Phone + Triangle + Computer thing...

I can still get to Download Mode but I'm a bit confused as to where to go from here. Should I use a different computer or try a different method or what? Based on the research I've done, this should have just taken off and worked, no issues....

The phone was a bone stock flash (although rooted) and I was following the steps outlined in Connexion's video.

HELP!

If you were stock and rooted, then you DON'T need Odin to flash a custom ROM. Once rooted, use CWM to install the .zip for whichever ROM you want and thats it (in a nutshell). Odin is only used for returning from a custom ROM BACK TO STOCK.

This is the guide I use, and it works great IF you follow step by step.

One thing I found is that when you connect via USB, Odin doesn't work when you plug it into a USB hub and it may be you have to connect it to the rear USB in the case of a desktop. (even if you got the COM port to show up)
+1

Yeah, you never want to flash with the phone connected through a USB Hub or anything like that. Even the front panel USB ports on a desktop aren't really recommended.

If possible, you want to plug in straight to the computer's motherboard (rear USB ports).

Going from Cog to Serendipity, I would Odin back first...just me though...someone else with more experience may correct me.
Absolutely! As I said, from one developer to another, one ROM to another, Odin back, full master clear, etc. and then do a fresh install. Once you've settled on a ROM (as I have Serendipity) then you can do the flash upgrades without wiping. Mikey usually tells us if he feels we should do a full flash, that happens sometimes when you have major step versions.

yeah it's really hit or miss... i had to take out the plug, try a few slots on my pc, then that would stop, and I'd have to try another port. it's ridic.

am also planning to try our Serendipity from Cognition 4.2.1
so I should ODIN to Eclair 1st then flash Serendipity, correct? do I need to disable voodoo via CWM first or just ODIN to stock? sorry am novice on this.
btw which ROM would you recommend for a newbie? I find Darky's & Cyan too complicated & too technical for newbie.

many thanks in advance to help from gurus

YOu don't have to disable lag fix, just use Odin, flash back to stock, and then flash Serendipity.
