What are ROMS, Rooting, and Hacks for Android?

I'm sure people are working on it, but geez, give them some time... it's only been what, three days? If you're in a real hurry, get to work learning to program instead of waiting for others :p

I think what they and myself would like to know is what is rooting/hacking/roms etc. Coming from a completely closed environment like the iPhone you are never exposed to such things, the closest we get is jailbreaking. I can guess what a hack is, I will assume rooting is similar to a jailbreak, what is a ROM? the only thing I can think of is it being what replaces the current phone OS, kinda like pineapple in the Apple world?

The question isn't when will these things come for the Inspire, its more "what the heck is this?".

how can i root or whatever to remove bloatware.... remember im brand new to this haha
Welcome to the forum.

First, you have an excellent phone that was designed by highly skilled engineers. They took into consideration that the carrier (AT&T in this case) would have their own software, which we call bloatware, installed.

99% of it has no effect if you're not using it, so rather than needlessly root your phone so soon, just leave it there.

Far too much is made over this topic. Just remove the icons from the home screens & don't worry about it. You can always go back later & root it once you've used it for a couple of months. Also that will give you time to learn what you're doing, and by then you will have a different opinion of how you want to setup you're phone.

Appreciate the fact that you're using one of the best, if not THE best smartphones on the market. Learn it well and you'll be surprised at how good it is right out of the box. :)

I have been with apple before i got my inspire and I like it. The only thing i wanted to know is what is rooting and ROMS and what do they do? Also what other hacks are there? Thanks

There is a rooting solution over at XDA Developers. As for custom ROMs, part of the problem is the kernel source code for the AT&T/Telus versions has not yet been released by HTC, so you are limited to ROMs that will only work with the stock AT&T/Telus kernels and that are some issues that users are putting up with. Once HTC releases the kernel source code, there will be more options as far as custom ROMs are concerned (i.e. CM 7).
