Root Advice for a noob about rooting, etc

I've read the stickies here and on xda. I'm still pretty new to this whole rooting and flashing business.

I just got my replacement phone from ATT/Asurion. My previous captivate was rooted and had an older version of cognition mod... until it got caught in the car door. Thank you ATT for putting it on tier 2 and charging me a 125 deductible (the X10 is only 50??) yet fail to support the phone.

On a side note, i was at the ATT store picking up screen protectors. The sales rep told me that the Captivate was taken off the list for upgrades to Froyo. Then a corporate rep in the store asked me how i liked the phone then said that froyo was coming soon and the salespeople were going to be trained on the upgrade path and support..... go figure?

Anyways the new phone I got came with JH7. Reading all the forum about how to root and install a new mod now has me confused. It says we need to root with odin but we have to flash back to stock (before JH7?) I used the one click root before, installed Clockworkmod (ROM manager) and proceeded to put cognition on before. Simple...

Now i'm confused. Apparently there is a new process for people who received the phone with JH7?

Secondly, here's the big noob question. Which ROM and modem? I've used cognition mod, but at the same time, I kind of need my bluetooth speakerphone hookup. Would say perception or andromeda be better for my purposes? Just looking for a snappy phone with an easy to use interface that works well. (dropped my phone a few times, but i do have a rubber case cover so i think it's ok). I read the whole spiel on xda about, reading each sticky in the dev forum about the ROMs, but there's so much stuff to read and sift through. Just wanted an honest opinion from you guys. Thanks for the time and consideration.

On a side note: i'm getting 2-3 days on my battery with normal use. Will the new ROMs kill the battery life?

This is what I do. Follow it exactly and you will be good to go.

[GUIDE] How to Install a custom ROM *NOW WITH VIDEOS* - xda-developers

Make sure you use the proper Odin if/when you flash back to stock. It all depends on which build Cappy you have. Look under your battery for a 4 digit number. Mine is a 1012 build, thus I need Odin3 to flash, found here: [STOCK ROM] Odin3 One-Click Downloader and Drivers CAPTIVATE ONLY - xda-developers

The only time you need Odin is when you have a custom ROM and want to go back to stock Eclair that came on the phone. Other than that, follow the first link above for the step by step to root, back up, and flash a custom ROM. I have used both Cog v3.04 and now Serendipity and love them both!

You cant use odin one click on a JH7 phone. It will brick it like it did mine. That odin one click even says for JF6 build,....not JH7.
