Droid X2....What?! Why?!

Check me if I'm wrong, but is the DX2 missing a front facing camera? Who the heck is really going to upgrade from a DX to a DX2 when everything else is just a marginal upgrade?

Yep, that's all they're doing. Updating it enough to keep it competitive with current phones, so it continues selling and doesn't get passed over by those looking at phones like the Thunderbolt.

Actually makes a lot of sense. They already have the tooling and moldings and everything for the form factor/screen/etc. So if they can slap a new processor in there and some more memory (assuming those two things are all it needs to stay competitive, and they are) and give it Gingerbread... It's a win all around. It also means that it's easy for them to port GB for the original X, so we get a boost in longevity.

They can count on upgrade-seeking X owners to look to phones like the Bionic.

The X has been extremely popular, even 3/4 a year after its release. (Thats a lifetime in phones.) Updating the speed makes a lot of sense to me, and many people are still under a year and a half contract with it.

Its just for new buyers, and the best thing for us, is hopefully we'll see moar updates, since the phones will be very similar. processing speed will be our biggest issue in comparison.

both of those phones make me shudder..... My girlfriend has my old BB Storm 1 now and its really starting to act up for her so shes going to take my droid X when I get the thunderbolt. I'm trying to think of some way we can jointly demolish the storm to release some of the frustration that thing has brought us both lol

You and quickaudi are getting me nauseous this morning.

Years ago I was happily using a Curve, having upgraded from a Pearl, and only being bothered by having to take the trackball mechanism apart every Sunday and clean it with alcohol, when I saw the Storm ads coming along in big banners at the Crackberry sites.

I did not bite. But many did, as touchscreen fever gripped Blackberry users.

Truly lmao as I think about it. Storm 2 gave them hope, and then their hopes were dashed.

Great analogy about the X and X2.. maybe.

Think of the X2 as a mid-cycle refresh that car models get. It's just freshened up with a few upgrades to what it already has, nothing really new, but keeps it just current enough to be competitive in the market.

In my opinion a small bump in processor speed and some more ram isn't really a huge upgrade to me. That and the fact it will have a locked bootloader pretty much guarentees I will not be getting it.

the x2 from all the talks is not worth the money to buy, sure dual core processor... how many apps are prepared for that? and can we take advantage of the dual core yet???
and the 1 gig ram is nice. will you notice a difference???

but no FFC thats harsh, no 4GLTE ability? thats rude.

i dont see this phone being that big of a hit considering the X is IMO the best phone on the verizon lineup currently
since t he OG droid has been phased out (hasnt it?) so yeah whoever gets this phone good luck to you, hope its worth it ^_^

i thought you were reading the wrong article, til i saw these 2 articles, the first one was posted on phandroid, the one on engadget seems to be the real deal, so thank you for pointing me in the correct direction ^_^

Looks like Verizon and Motorola are looking to introduce a sequel to the original DROID X

Aside from the ram there really is no improvement. I mean I am already oveclocked to 1.2 ghz, run an awesome rom, and have it customized to my liking. Why would I spend more money on 128 more megs of ram. Again this only my opinion....

Why is the phone going to fail? It's not a phone targeted at X owners. It's a phone targeted at people who are buying a new phone - and the specs keep it even with current phones like the Thunderbolt. The X is still a very popular phone right now, why won't the X2 continue this trend with better specs? How is the assumption that it's going to fail when nobody is shrieking that the Thunderbolt will fail? The X is just getting shifted from it's spot at the top of the heap, to a tier down. The 4G phones are going to be king now.

Why should they have made this the original spec? The X was released as one of the most powerful phone available. You didn't expect that clock speeds and memory were going to be higher 6 months after it was released? That's the way technology works. You could just as easily say that they should have made the X with the same specs as the Bionic. Technology continues marching along.

Very good post. To add to this, Verizon is still going to need high end 3G android devices for people that either can't get 4G or dont want to pay the possibly higher data fees. It also appears that the 4G devices may be priced higher than the now standard $199 on contract. Remember that Verizon has to fill more needs than just the ultra high end devices. Even with all the impressive devices that were released on Verizon in 2010 the LG ally was one of the top selling devices. At the corporate store where my daughter works, the LG ally was the second best selling device in 2010 out selling all but the Droid X. Not everybody needs or wants a high end device and with the economy still in the crapper lower priced alternatives are the best answer for alot of people.

I can agree on that. Hell by the time I'm able to upgrade quad core phones will be out so I really have no interest in any phone right now.
