Help A million and 1 questions.

First off, this is my first android phone and im lost. I played around with it for a week and figured some stuff out. My questions are:

1. How can I save battery life without rooting? I have the light to the dimmest and constantly check Running Services even without using the phone.
2. What are roms?
3. How do I change the alarm/text message sound?
4. How does GTalkService, MetroPCS Easy Wifi, HopspotService always open up? (I know to stop items in Running Services. Why can't I stop Swype? I have Advanced Task Killer but it doesnt help much.
5. Is there an email app that shows inbox and out box for aim?
6. Is it normal to wake up to the battery being on 30% when u left it at 90% the night before with nothing running?
7. I got the Paper Toss game. Are all games that choppy?
8. What can I delete that I dont need without rooting?
9. Since wifi is faster than the 1g, can I tether and use that wifi to use the internet?
10. I see people are waiting for 2.2. How will that improve the phone?
11. Whats the best internet browser to use?
12. Does the Barcode Scanner work?

I probably got more questions, just cant think of them now. Any help will be appreciated.

I can answer some questions
1.u can use battery doctor and juice defender
3. U can go to the app market and get ring extender it will let u use your own music as ringtones
You will have to go to the app market and either get go sms or handcent cuz the stock messaging app don't have that option
8.the only way you can delete things is if u root which is very easy to do

1. Juice Defender. Its a free battery saving app available at the Market.

2. Roms is something you install on the phone. For example the Icarus Rom is a modified version of the original kernal. (Somebody else can provide a better definition.

3. Settings>Sounds & Display> Notification Ringtone

4. Those services run automatically. I believe if you download Advanced Task Killer you can set it to autokill apps and I believe this will help.

5. Go to the market search: Aim. It should be the first one. Make sure you get he official one from AOL.

6. That offen happens to me. I charge my Ascend overnight because the battery life is so terrible its a joke.

7. Yes. The Ascend does not have a dedicated graphics unit. There is nothing we can do to about this.

8. You can uninstall apps but apps that came with the phone that require root.

9. That won't make a difference because you will just be re tethering that same 1G. By the way you can't wirelessly tether unless you root. Try to connect to regular WiFi.

10. Android 2.2 is a newer version of Android. It should overall improve speed. Some apps require Android 2.2 or higher so we cannot get those apps with having 2.2. Android 2.2 also has the feature to install apps to the SD Card instead of the phone's internal memory. This is very nice if your low on internal space. It will also bring the Flash Player. The Flash Player however probably won't work well on the Ascend because its processor is only 528Mhz.

11. I prefer Dolphin Browser HD. Its a free Browser available at the Market. It has tabs and many other features that the original Browser doesn't have. I also hear Opera is very fast but I haven't tested it myself.

12. Yes it usually does it. It would probably work better on higher end phones but it usually works on the Ascend.
