After 4 Captivates...

I'm really considering calling AT&T again and requesting a change in phones. After my fourth Captivate, my GPS still can't hold a lock, phone shuts off every now and again and Froyo is nowhere to be found. The Inspire seems much better out of the box than the Captivate will ever be.

The only thing that throws me off a bit is development and ease of flashing on the Captivate as opposed to the Inspire.

Rooting over at XDA seems like a huge PITA and doesn't seem much better for the Desire HD (which has been out longer and it's the same basic phone I believe). And at this point after being rooted and running custom roms, I can't live with stock anymore! Just not having TiBu is a killer to restore all my apps.

I know it's too early to tell, but does the dev community and custom roms seem promising for the Inspire? I'm really thinking about picking up the Inspire now.

I'm heavily considering getting the Inspire. As much as I like the Captivate, the lack of support and runaround with issues such a GPS is enough already.

I'm just curious about the modding community and how it projects to be (if that can even be answered).

Essentially this is the Desire HD. The Desire has been heavily modded. I think it's a safe bet that the Inspire will have a great deal of mods available as well. Just have to wait until HTC releases the kernel (whatever that means).

Sounds great then! Once running custom roms, it's so hard to go back to stock regardless of what phone it is...

you should defiantly get an inspire

I had a captivate a year ago and it was awful

same issues you had.

random shut off and my music player would play whenever it wanted to.

the inspire is much better than a captivate

Yeah, it's quite annoying. Not to mention GPS picks up my location in seconds, but it can't track me at all. 10 miles down the road it still thinks I'm where it initially locked on to me...

I'm trying to speak to AT&T to work with me on getting the Inspire. 4 Captivates is enough, I'm not about to swap to another one to get a broken GPS once again, as well as possible shutdowns, disabled recovery/download mode, laggy interface, no updates and so on...

I have had a captivate since it came out. Upgraded from an iphone 4 and it is way better then that. My roommate just got the inspire yesterday and she let me play with it. I have to say it is way better then the captivate out of the box. Bigger screen better camera and a nicer user interface. I wish I could upgrade because I would have right then and there. Oh and it doesn't feel like a plastic talking device

2.2 is out on the AT&T Captivate as of this week. I suggest loading it and checking your phone before trying to get AT&T to replace it as that is going to be the first thing they tell you to do.

The Inspire is just an updated EVO/HD Desire so it is fairly polished, rooting will get easier the longer it is out as it does with all of them.

2.2 isn't out. And not like it actually fixes any major issue with the phone (gps)

The EVO was HTC's answer to everyone crying for a HD2 with Android, and Desire HD was HTC's answer to EU wanting the EVO. Now AT&T gets their version to try and combat Verizon getting the iPhone.

If you want to argue part #'s inside the phones I can do that, but they all have marginal component upgrades compared to the EVO and lost the front facing camera. The HD7 is the same phone as well.

It's you're btw.

I have a Captivate too. Got the Inspire last Sunday. I tried just about every ROM/modem/kernel available on XDA for the Captivate. I find that the Inspire is better out of the box than the Captivate on any ROM.

I have looked into rooting the Inspire, but I have not done it yet. It seems much more complicated than the Captivate. From what I have read, I do not expect the rooting process to get any easier, since the EU version of the phone has been out for a while, but still has a somewhat difficult rooting process.

The only good thing about the Captivate was the ease of rooting/flashing.

This I will give you. The captivate was real easy but that's probably cause Samsung knew it needed it lol
