Root Thinking of flashing a new ROM, I have a few questions.

Hi all:
Well, I think I am finally sick of waiting for AT&T to release the Froyo update. I have read and read, and read some more.
Now, what I am wondering, is which ROM is most similar to the stock ROM. What I mean, is do they all have TouchWiz, and the same "features" (minus bloatware of course)? I like the app drawer scrolling sideways, lock screen, and the overall feel of AT&Ts. I have obviously found a million threads regarding ROMs and flashing etc, but it seems that no one is necessarily looking for a ROM which is similar to AT&Ts.

Which one is the "easiest", as far as configuring it to work on AT&T?
I am a newbie to flashing, and think I have the gist of how to flash, but I am concerned about which ROM should I choose. I have read the ROM threads, and it seems on some bluetooth doesn't work properly etc...

I'd also prefer if it had a kernel already included, since that is the one thing I am still confused about.

Also, what is the easiest way to reinstall apps etc. I have all my apps backed up through Titanium as well as MyBackup, but I have truthfully never had to use them to re-install apps on a new ROM.

Your advice would really be appreciated,

I recommend the Andromeda ROM. I am using their v2.0 (orange theme). Super nice ROM, GPS locks quickly, no issues what so ever. Click here for installation steps and links to the needed tools. Step 1 Method 1 works for me no problem. Just make sure your USB drivers on the PC can see your phone before you start anything.

As far as backups - I can't advise. I don't back up my apps or their data before flashing a ROM. I see it as too risky for causing issues. I prefer to spend the 15 or so minutes re-downloading from the Market the apps I want.

I use the Andromeda 1.2 unthemed version, it's the only ROM that I've flashed and I'm very happy with it. Everything seems to work for me including bluetooth. I backed up all of my apps with TB, but if you do so, make sure that you only restore apps + data and NOT system data.

I flashed Cognition a couple weeks into owning my phone. Never looked back. It uses the Gingerbread app drawer though. With no side scrolling. The 3d looking up and down type. As far as config. for At&t. There isn't anything you have to do but flash it and use it. My first flash gave me no problems and I've even updated it a few times when they came out with new versions. I won't go into all the specifics on what you need to do but you can read up on it at the xda Cognition page. Cognition has been moved to another website called Team Whiskey, link is on that original page.

Another popular ROM right now is Serendipity but I have not flashed it yet. Those are the 2 I would go with personally.

I've always used the stock ROMs since they come with Modems and Kernels already. Some people like to customize more and install alternative ones. Its up to you.

I was just in At&t getting something for another phone today and the salesperson was digging the Captivate with the custom ROM. Since the store models still have 2.1 . I'll probably never even use the Samsung firmware update when they come out. The ROMs are the way to go.

FYI - I too started with Cognition. Liked that but got curious and tried Serendipity. Liked that too but was still curious so I loaded Andromeda. I think all 3 are great. It's just a matter of preference - though I swear my phone with Andromeda is a tad (seat of pants kinda feel) quicker. I don't think you can go wrong with any of these 3 ROMs.

from my experiences i would recommend serendipity, supernova, perception, cognition. if you want the touchwiz launcher you can get an app called "galaxy s tools" supernova comes with it, i think serendipity does i cant remember, but it has an option to upgrade stock apps and you can reinstall it though that, its also a faster version of touchwiz so very smooth

You should visit this webpage that SREMICK and others maintain. Here's a direct link to the ROM table listing all the current ROMS, their latest update (a couple were updated today), their kernels, and other info about each ROM with a link to the Developer's webpage.

I flashed to Serendipity 5.8 yesterday and updated to 5.9 today. Now the phone works great. No lag, good GPS, no bloatware. Serendipity stays on top of updates.

sgs tools is a free app on the market and the first option is to make a backup of your efs folder which contains your original nand and imei info

back it up and then copy it to a safe place just in case

you prolly will not need it as most of the current roms do not change these items but it is a good idea to back it up

I've never tried Serendipity but since joining here I've seen nothing but love for it. Might be my next project to flash that. Kind of hope I can get away with flashing it over Cog 3.04 like the flowchart says. Flash with CWM>Is it working>Yes>Enjoy.

Any Serendipity uses have success with flashing over Cog without Odin first?

No problem - I did the same thing. I wasn't sure you knew about the ROM table. I still check it every day to see who has updated what. Thanks to SREMICK and others for a handy webpage. After all my reading, I went with Serendipity.
