I'm new to rooting but if I'm not mistaking, rooting is like doing a factory reset on your phone correct? Or is that only if you flash wit a customized ROM (or are they basically the same thing?)

If the above is correct, then its smart to root/flash when you first have the phone & not when you have 9001 apps?

you can root your phone and never flash a rom in it. rooting just gives your phone unrestricted super user access. weather you use it on the stock ruu or if you decide to flash a rom is completely up to you.

to answer your second question, not true. once you are rooted you will be able to download Titanium which is an app that allows you to backup all your apps (on a folder in your SD card), even the data that you may have saved in it. then once you decide to flash a rom, you just download Titanium again and restore all your apps.

whens the best time to root?....NOW! lol..its worth it, if not for any other reason, than to have wifi teather free on the phone.

VERY helpful, now I get it. What are the benefits of flashing a ROM if you can do things like wifi tether, tale pic of screen, overcloc, etc without flashing a ROM (or am I wrong?)?

the benefits of flashing a rom is to basically change up the way everything looks and sometimes runs. when i had my HTC Hero, it came in Android 1.5, and 2.1 wasnt out yet, so when they created those roms, we flashed them to have 2.1 on our phones for months before it was even released. i'm sure there will be 2.3 coming out soon for the shift, so thats a good reason to flash the rom, to try it and see if you like it..its not for everyone..i personally dont plan on flashing on roms on this phone, it runs so perfect as is.

once you are rooted you will be able to overclock, take screen shots with no problem.

Can someone put the rooting directions in English for those of us that have never rooted a phone before and may not know some of the terminology?

I want to do this SOOOOO bad but alot of the directions aren't making sense to me. I've never heard of alot of the programs/terms that are mentioned in the "6 Step" root directions.
