Push notifications? Facebook ...

Yeah, I'm going to compare my awesome Android to my mother's iPhone. :p

Her iPhone gets "push" notifications from Facebook. I think that's the right term? As in, when somebody comments/messages her, her phone goes off and tells her about it. Mine doesn't?

How do I get Facebook to beep and alert at me that somebody is buggin' me on Facebook?

I really have few complaints about my Captivate, but this is definitely one of them.

Thanks in Advance! :)

lol.. I've spent literally days trying to get facebook to go away on my phone and/or update as little as possible. Its been my mission since day one and biggest reason for rooting...

Do you like, know a bunch of people without phones that use facebook as their emergency contact? I can't possibly think of anything that's ever been said on facebook that couldn't wait an hour, or days, or forever, before I read it.

Froyo is android 2.2, as opposed to android 2.1 which is I'm guessing what your phone runs.

Like, uh ... no, but it's a nice feature to have ... ?

This is the kind of answer I'm looking for, lol. So Froyo is Android 2.2; how do I figure what I've got? I think I must have 2.1 like you said -- I went under "About phone" and underneath "Firmware Version" it says "2.1 - Update 1"

Now to figure out how to get this 2.2 you speak of ...

The notifications do get a little bit annoying on my phone, and they keep turning themselves back on every time I turn them off. The only way I found to turn them off was by logging off, and logging back in was a bitch since my password was super long and complex, but yeah, I do have Froyo (Cognition ROM) and all the other perks that come with Cognition.

But I want them ON, not off, lol.

Unless you're going to go through the process of rooting and flashing a 2.2 ROM (which many on this board are qualified to help you with, but not me), you'll have to wait until AT&T and Samsung issue the Android 2.2 update for the Captivate. Rumors about that are in the "All Things Froyo" thread at the top of this board, with some suggesting Froyo will be issues sometime this coming week. That being said, there's no official word, so we could still be waiting for Froyo in a month.

There are many apps or features of apps that just will not work on the release version of 2.1 that runs on the Captivate. Unfortunately, Froyo, or 2.2 remains a promised feature that has yet to be delivered. More and more regular users are going to notice features and apps that work on other phones, that just won't work on what was until recently the flagship Android phone for AT&T.

With the HTC Inspire and the Motoroloa Atrix, the Captivate has officially joined the ranks of phones with outdated operating systems on the AT&T network. All we can do is wait for an official update that was promised, void your warranty and install a custom rom, or just be happy with a phone that just can't keep up with what your friends are able to do. Not a great choice really.

Search is your friend. ;)

The Captivate FAQ, which is a forum sticky, mentioned in many users' signatures and in most threads, can provide you lots of info on this.

Froyo - CapFAQ

Ohhh, so notifications from Facebook will not start functioning like emails or text messages with Froyo? Unless I skipped over it, it wasn't on the list of features promised.

It's not on the list because it's an app-specific thing. There are lots of 3rd-party apps that either require 2.2 or only provide certain functionality with 2.2. It'd be impossible to track them all, and it is sort of at the whim of whomever makes the app. The list on the FAQ is the functionality provided by 2.2 itself.

I posted the link for the "what is 2.2 froyo?" tangent that the thread had taken. ;)

One way I've somewhat remedied this situation is by enabling email notifications through Facebook and sending them to my gmail account. You won't get a designated sound just for Facebook, but it'll push an e-mail for most notifications. I say most because I've had one or two slip through and I just find out about them next time I get on Facebook directly.

If you go to the Facebook site, go to "Account" and then "Account Settings." Look for the "Notifications" tab and choose what you want there. Anything can go to email, and some items can be set for SMS updates.

It's not as clean as if it were integrated, but since I have more luck using Facebook through the mobile site than the app I don't mind the email notifications.

I can't speak for the OP, but I know there are a handful of people I enjoy conversing with on Facebook, either publicly or privately, that I just don't really feel committed to well enough that I'd pass along my phone number :p.

Someone should invent a means of sending electronic messages that doesn't require Facebook. Facebook must not be allowed to have this monopoly over the internet... for far too long has Facebook held the internet in its iron grip, controlling the sole means of all online communication, pictures, emails, and instant messaging. We must break free! We could give people unique addresses... maybe have their chosen username before an @ sign, and then the part after is whatever electronic mail service (maybe call it "e-mail"?) they chose, so that everyone could use whatever they liked, and we could all inter-communicate. And instant messaging... there could be this separate app they installed, sort of like how they installed their web browser, and they could use that to IM independent of Facebook too! Ah, what a glorious world that would be!

You're absolutely right, I agree.
Not to mention, it would be much more convenient to be able to check your notifications without having to mess around inside any of the sub-par applications offered on the Market for Facebook. Until then, I'll continue to have Facebook send me SMS messages...
